Third Best Ranger Ever Community Project
Congratulations to Juan Gonzalez on being named the second greatest Texas Ranger ever with 57% of the Lone Star Ball vote.
- Ivan Rodriguez 1991-2002
- Juan Gonzalez 1989-99, 2002-03
Now it's time to decide who the third greatest Ranger ever is. I would suggest judge it the same way you would evaluate MLB players over a career, but consider their careers were only as long as the years and games they played with the Texas Rangers. Consider not just best seasons, but total contribution, and perhaps a bit of profile.
If there's anyone not on the ballot who you think should be considered as the fourth best Ranger, please let me know in the comments.
Write-In Votes
If there's someone not on the list who you want to vote for, please vote "OTHER," then write your vote down in a reply. If you label that reply as "Write In" it will be much easier for me to find. Thanks!

Staying with Palmeiro.
I have a feeling Ryan’s going to win, though.

Yeah...
I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s because I’m not from Texas, but how the hell does Ryan have so many votes and A-Rod has 8? A-Rod’s #’s (albeit in a short 3 year period) are far superior to those of Nolan’s. This is the “greatest” Ranger ever not your favorite Ranger ever.
3) A-Rod
4) Raffy
5) MY

greatest ranger
has to spend more than 3 years in blue. id never vote for Arod before Sunny. never.

I understand that...
But look at the #’s A-Rod put up in 3 years here compared to the #’s Sunberg put up in 12 years.
It’s hard for me to imagine a player having 3 better years here than A-Rod did. I understand the longevity argument, just don’t agree with it.

Arod was never a true ranger
he never wanted to be here, he got out ASAP and he was only here for a blink of an eye.
but vote away….

What's a "true ranger"?
Players now go to the team that will give them the most money or that they think can win a WS. If he never wanted to be a Ranger he would have signed somewhere else.
And I will vote away, as you have done. You can’t argue the #’s A-Rod put up while he was here, so you say things like he wasn’t a “true ranger” as if that should discount his accomplishments during his 3 years in Arlington, false.

No, I don't.
He played for the Rangers. That’s a Ranger to me.
And that would make him a “true” Ranger since it’s not like it was pretend or a joke or something.

actually dirk i am
there are literally millions of rangers fans who have so much respect and joy for this team they would literally bleed (even if its just a lil’ bit) for that club and for one of the greatest rangers of all time to basically show a total lack of respect for the club, his teammates, the organization, and the fans. To even remotely consider the guy as one of the greatest rangers is a slap in the face to the organization and fans who have dedicated so much time and finance into the club. its insulting to what the rangers are.
its kinda sick. kinda makes me wanna puke a lil.
//devil’s advocate but i was on a role.
// The Rangers fans here at LSB have more dedication to the club than Arod has in his left pinky (notice i didnt mention his lack of dedication to his wife in relation to his lack of dedication to the club)

Nolan Ryan is the reason
a lot of people my age are Texas Ranger fans… That deserves some credit.

I have no problem with that...
And I do give him credit for that. He’s a Texas icon and had a few good (not great) years with the Rangers.
However that doesn’t make him one of the top 5 greatest Rangers ever. Again, just my opinion.

Ryan
He was also only a Ranger one year longer than A-Rod, so there is no longevity argument for him.

Just for what he has done for the Rangers. IMO he is Mr. Ranger

Ryan?
As I posted in the 2nd best thread, Ryan isn’t even the Rangers all-time best pitcher. Shoot he’s not even the 2nd best.
I voted Palmeiro, fwiw.

Ryan’s probably my favorite, but that’s a totally different discussion.

palmeiro
though more of a bias pick, he was my favorite ranger for my first years watching the rangers.

Grrr
I voted for A-Rod here, but I’m gonna be plenty po’d if Nolan gets ranked ahead of Fergie. Indefensible.

Sunny!!!
longest tenured ranger on the list and not on roids and not a douche and the original great catcher of the rangers, he was the 1st of the great catchers to come out of texas and start the long line.
no doubt in my mind.

who cares about longevity
Nolan Ryan did more for this franchise than any other player. I think people are just being anti-Ryan because its the “different” thing to do.
by JackDublin on Aug 7, 2008 9:58 AM CDT 0 recs
I don't think
most people here are that spiteful or lemming-like. It’s tough to say for me, actually, who had more impact as a Ranger, and it’s completely subjective. If you want to say impact for the fanbase or national media attention you could go with Ryan, but if you want impact as a player there are a number of legit arguments in the #3, 4, 5 rankings, etc.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
