Rangers interested in Freddy Garcia

Freddy Garcia pitched a bullpen session in front of scouts for 15 teams or so yesterday.  MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez says the Rangers are among the teams most interested.

Of all the teams at least taking a look at Garcia, the Mets, Tigers -- with a lot of Venezuelan players on the roster and Carlos Guillen being a good friend of Garcia's -- Rays -- who, as Greenberg said, "have really stayed in touch" -- and Rangers appear to be among the most interested.

If I'm reading that right, and I'd like to think I am, the Mets, Tigers, Rays, and Rangers are the most interested.  It doesn't sound like he impressed the scouts all that much.

"He's still at 80 percent," one scout said. "He's still easing his way into his rehab.

"He doesn't seem to me to be a this-year guy."

I asked if anyone is interested in the comments of a post yesterday and no one was interested.  The article doesn't exactly make me want to start a campaign for the guy.  I wonder if he would consider pitching some games for the Fort Worth Cats (a la Hochevar) just to prove he can still do it.

Can't hurt

as long as it’s something like following his rehab over the winter to see how he’s doing as opposed to offering him a major league contract a la Jennings. I think they can do better pretty easily, though.

I'm not sure where he would pitch next year

I see 5 spots in Millwood, Padilla, Hurley, Harrison and Hunter. And you B-Mac and Feldman as reserves. Or if B-Mac is healthy you make Hunter a AAA or bullpen guy.

if hunter doesn't work out as a starter

then i think he’ll be a good reliever. in his first innings in his starts he was untouchable

Uggh

That’s a butt ass terrible rotation.

Harrison and Hunter need some more AAA time.

McCarthy gets a shot before those guys, but at the rate he keeps getting injured he’ll be dead by then.

If he's not a "this year" guy...

don’t bother with him. I don’t believe he’s got the personality to fit in with this team – too Ponson-ish.

I Agree

I don’t know if he is Ponson-ish or not, but if it is not for this year than hopefully next year our pitching situation will be better and we will not need an aging pitcher.

i doubt it will be better

Really?

I didn’t know Garcia had that sort of rep.

What has he done in the past?

Well...

He does like to drink during games in which he’s pitching. Vodka looks a lot like water…

You're shitting me!?

I’d never heard that.

I’m assuming you’re being sarcastic, cause if that’s true… Damn.

Ditto

that would be something I think teammates would crucify him for, way more than anything Wilson did.

I don't really consider it a rumor.

Since my source is a former teammate of his, I consider it a fact.

They stood for that?

I’d have thought was certain shit you just weren’t allowed to do in baseball.

Drink vodka in between innings of a start is one of those things.

During his starts?

or just when he was on the bench? Either way, completely inexcusable.

way to go

Ozzie Guillen.
He went all Joe Torre on this guy and all but destroyed his career. He won’t pitch this year, that’s for sure.

If he's not gonna go this year,

why are we talking about this?

Probably because it's new info that he won't be a "this year" guy

So now that we all know it looks like he won’t be in the majors this year, we can know to not worry about home an dpursue other interests instead of wondering if we should sign him.

I asked Will Carroll and Joe Sheehan at the Newberg Event about Garcia

They concluded that he won’t be worth signing this for this year. Carroll said he’s refusing to sign a multi-year deal and thus probably won’t get a deal done unless he changes his mind. I’d love to add a starter, but I’m not sure that he’s a better option than what they have now.

Hmn.. I think we need a third-party opinion for this one:

Well, I guess that about settles it then.
