Minors - 08/06

Spokane - 8:30 (all times CST) - Pimentel (!)

Clinton - 7:00 - Main (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Bakersfield - 9:00 - Holland (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Frisco - 7:00 - Hodges

OKC already played.  Kam Loe got beat around, JMJ went 0-4 with 2k, Chris Shelton homered.  Nothing exciting.

As an aside, anyone feel like taking a shot at the Rangers' organizational prospect depth chart on Sickels' site?  Maybe it could be a collective effort.

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

Great article

JParks doing good asking some high-level as well as technical questions.

Interesting what he had to say about Perez. If bad outings can roll off his back like Bleier intimated, he’ll be well on his way to gaining that Major league mentality. Hopefully his abilities will follow suit.

What's the rumpus?

Main vs Holland

With the promotions of Hurley, Harrison, and Hunter; the innings reduction for Feliz; and the injuries to Gomez and Castillo, the starting pitching attractions in the Rangers minor league system are not what they were a month ago. With that said, the Main/Holland double-feature that has played the last two weeks is as good as it gets. Personally, I think that these two guys rank #2 and #3 among the Rangers’ minor league pitchers as they both have three potentially plus pitches, get K’s in bunches, have sterling ERAs, and are reportedly very good athletes.

Last week’s double feature provided the following blockbuster results:
Main – 6 IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, and 4SO
Holland – 6IP, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, and 5SO

2008 stats for the minor league aces:
Main (@Clinton) – 19.2 IP, 18H, 6BB, 15SO, 1.83 ERA
Main (Overall) – 33 IP, 26H, 11BB, 30 SO, 2.48 ERA

Holland (@Bakersfield) – 26IP, 14H, 4 BB, 29SO, 2.08 ERA
Holland (Overall) – 119.2 IP, 91H, 33BB, 120SO, 2.33 ERA

Main

I’ve always been partial to Main in the beavan-Main tandem and he isn’t doing anything to disappoint. I wonder where Main would be if he’d have started the season healthy. With Holland in BAK? Ah well…

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Aug 6, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Main through 4 innings

3H, 1BB, 4SO, and 0ER. His ERA in 5 starts at Clinton – 1.66.

With Beavan and Main fronting their rotation, Clinton should be a tough out in the MWL playoffs next month.

by spurdynasty on Aug 6, 2008 8:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Main

Had he started the season healthy he would be in Bakersfield right now. And based on how he has performed I would say its a good bet he would be in line to start next season in Frisco if he had been healthy all year

Best thing about Main

Is being the best fielder on the field. In todays game 2 on with no out. Bunt attempt, charged by Main, throw to 3rd to get guy out. How many pitchers do you see do that.

by gamerabcd on Aug 6, 2008 8:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

How about...

Warner Madrigal! hehe

I will tell you one thing…I lived in Houston during their glory years (‘90’s and early ‘00’s) and it was a joy to watch Mike Hampton pitch for them. That guy was an athlete on the mound and at the plate. Don’t know if Main will be another Owings at the plate when we play InterLeague but it will be another interesting dimension to look out for.

I’m assuming he’s done for the night. What a stud.

Has he had a bad start since turning pro? I think he might have had one or two rough outings last year, but wow.

Just damn. I mean other than 3rd base this system is just loaded. Could use a little more power potential in the OF as well.

The pitching that is coming is off the charts.

wondering

I was wondering what effect Pina’s development will have on the Rangers catching decision. Is it out of the question to keep Laird? He is entering his prime, arguably above average defensively, knows the Rangers pitching staff. Would they sign him to a 3 yr deal? I know Boras is his agent but Gerald hasn’t gotten a muli-year deal yet. He could be willing to sign a 3yr/9M deal? (I just threw out those numbers. I have no idea what a fair deal would be for him.)

"An effortless 98" - Scott Gardner after Neftali Feliz's first AA pitch

by RangerMad on Aug 6, 2008 10:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why would the Rangers do that?

The other catchers are probably all signed for less than that, longer than that and have more upside than Laird.

by hiafex on Aug 6, 2008 10:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Laird

He has three more years of Arb and Boras isn’t known for signing any kind of pre-arb deals. Also with the Rangers catching situation it would make sense for them to just go year to year with Laird and not get locked into anything long term.

Pretty sure he signed a 2 year deal with the rangers before the 06 season when he became arb eligible….

Yea

I guess I should have expanded that and said Boras doesn’t allow free agent years to be bought out at any kind of discount to the club.

Holland pitching with a plan tonight

Obviously, he decided that the best way to pitch against the best-hitting team in the Cal League in the best hitter’s park in the US is to simply strike everyone out. 7 K’s in 9 plate appearances by the opposition. He’s getting ahead with the fastball and striking guys out with the high fastball or change-up. If you’re not excited about this guy, then you’re just not paying attention!

Beltre and Borbon hitless

some farm awesomeness

Elvis went 2-5 with a homer.
Main was terrific again.
Holland struck out the world’s population before getting boned a bit.
Pimentel was good.
Bianucci hit his 2nd homer in 2 games.

Murphy

What did he get tossed for? I saw that he got ejected before he even threw a pitch. The manager was tossed as well.

by uthornfan on Aug 7, 2008 12:15 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

West was plunked the half inning before

it looks like Murphy was trying to payback plunk the next opponent batter and missed him – resulting in a pre-emptive toss for throwing at a batter. Something like that.

by shroomer on Aug 7, 2008 12:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Holland learned a lesson?

You can’t strike out every batter who comes to the plate. It appears he was killing ‘em, and didn’t stick to his game plan.

Good learning experience for Mr. Dutch.

August promotions?

Considering folks deserving a promotion in Clinton are not being promoted to maintain their playoff roster, it would seem that post-ASB promotions are now eschewed within the org. to preserve a “winning” culture (whatever that means). So I would expect that there are no more promotions this year, Holland, or whoever, that isn’t motivated by injury. Does anyone know if this is a change from previous years?

by Goyogringo on Aug 7, 2008 12:59 AM CDT   0 recs

Holland

might get the move to Frisco for their playoff run. I assume most of the guys in Spokane, and Clinton will stay put for their respective playoff runs. Does anyone know if the AZ league has playoffs and if the Rangers are in right now?
