3 trades to make before next spring
Greetings from under this hot rag.
I want to propose the following trades and see if you would make those trades and if you think it would improve your Texas Rangers in 2009 and beyond.
Trade Uno
Marlins and Rangers..
Marlins get: Elvis Andrus, Eric Hurley, and Nelson Cruz
Rangers get: Hanley Ramirez
Trade Dos
Reds and Rangers..
Reds get: Gerald Laird
Rangers get: Homer Bailey
Trade Tres
Royals and Rangers..
Royals get: a pick of one of our top pitchers in the minors NOT named Neftali (sp?), Blalock, Salty, and another top to med minor leaguer
Rangers get: Zack Greinke
That would give us two solid arms and an All-Star SS for years to come. We can then move MY to 3rd and have an infield of MY, Ramirez, Kinsler, Davis.
Our Catcher would then be Teagarden
Our 5 would be Greinke, Bailey, Padilla, Millwood, McCarthy with Harrison and Hunter ready to step in in the minors. We could then move Feldman and Mendoza to the Bullpen and let Eddie walk in the off season and try and trade Benoit.
It would weaken our minor league system no doubt but we would greatly upgrade our MLB team with young and proven talent.
I would also resign MB only if he can play the OF 70% of the time next year and beyond because I want MaxRam as my backup catcher and everyday DH.

I like them,
but what would be the TRUE possibility of those trades even comming close to going through??

We are trade good young talent for these guys. Elvis I think is the next Hanley Ramirez and Florida is getting a SS, Pitcher, and Nelson Cruz whom I believe is a good player and will develop into a very nice everyday OF for years to come.

Nope
Cruz is 27 or 28 years old and has never shown he can hit MLB pitching. He has no trade value. Hurley is a mid-rotation starter and Elvis has not shown anything to suggest he is the next Hanley. I realize that Hanley never showed much power in the minors, but just because he went from little power to 40 bombs, doesn’t mean that every skinny Latin SS can do the same thing. There is no way Florida makes that deal.

Depending on who the mysterious minor leaguer is in the KC deal
that one might fly, though I fail to see why they’d agree to take on Blalock when they have Gordon at 3rd and Butler can play 1b. Something like Salty, Borbon, Holland and Poveda would probably get it done. Think about the Dan Haren deal when thinking of Grienke.
That Hanley trade is just f’ing ridiculous. May as well ask them to throw in Uggla and Maybin.
Who knows what Bailey’s value is at this point. My guess is the Reds are just going to hold on to him. There’s no way they could get real value for him at this point.

If it was Salty, Borbon, Holland, and Poveda
I don’t think I would do it. IMO, I think Holland can be a future ace and Salty will eventually figure things out.

That's almost as ridiculous as Ahmad's Hanley offer.
Well, okay. No it’s not. But, still…
Anyone who wouldn’t deal Salty/Poveda or Dutch/Phillips for Grienke is crazy.
He’s worth far more than that.
Even if you don’t like him you’d have to do those deals just so you could flip him to another team for a package of better prospects, cause he’d bring back a much nicer package than either of those.

Greinke
I’m not sure why everyone is on the dude’s jock.
He’s not been that good outside of an outstanding start. He pitches in a pretty pitcher-friendly park with a decent defense behind him, but he’s HR prone and lacks great stuff.
He seems like a 4.50 ERA guy in Arlington to me, and he only has 1 year of team control left and is a headcase.
Where’s the great value in a guy like that?

Well he has 2 years of team control left after this one, so that's one thing
Plus he has great pure stuff and he’s still very young (only 24) so there’s reason to believe he could improve. He’s shown flashes of greatness, or at least very-goodness. He has a very nice k/bb (131/42 in 146ip this year). There aren’t any big injury concerns. He’s apparently put all his psychological issues that made him a “head case” behind him. His FIP the past two year have been 3.74 and 3.80, which are both really pretty darn good. I think he’s better than you think. A pitcher like that has serious value, whether you want him for your team or not.

Not a bannable offense
Anytime you read “x trades we should make before next year by The Ahmad”, you should open the thread only for the comedic qualities that it will no doubt contain.
If click on it looking for intelligent baseball opinions and thought provoking concepts and you’re frustrated by the content, its your own fault. You should know better by now.

No worst trade proposal ever
was when the Rangers were in Cleaveland and some guy in the newspaper said Andy Marte and 2 other late 20’s prospects, I think, for Josh Hamilton. And I remember TAG’s reaction.” You know I’m pretty sure the Rangers wouldnt even take 2 of those guys if the Indians just gave them to them, and you expect the Rangers to do this.”

With the contract Hanley just signed...
There’s no way the Marlins trade him. I’d put the over/under at about 2.5%, and take the under without hesitation.
For a team that has a reputation of alienating their fan base by trading off elite young talent once it becomes to expensive, there’s no way they’d be able to justify trading off Hanley Ramirez at 24 years old signed through 2014 for what looks to be below market value…
by N41D on Aug 7, 2008 4:28 PM CDT 0 recs
By definition, if YOU choose the over/under, that means you think the number you chose is 50/50
Thus, you can’t set the over/under and then choose one of them.

For this particular situation, semantics
As someone who spent countless saturday and sunday aftermoons in his early 20’s with a 5 o’clock shadow,a gold sheet, and a nervous tic, I can assure you that I am well aware of that distinction. Totals were my favorite bet.
But when using this particular gambling metaphor to make your point, I think it sounds oddly ridiculous. Usually the person making the comment is trying to convey that they think the odds are really low (in this case), not “I think the odds of this happening will be perceived as quite low by the general public, and I am personally much, much more bearish than them.”
If that’s what he meant, fine.

WHY are people in love with eric hurley
what did he show at AAA?
5.74 era, 24.7 ip, 9:13 bb:k, 5 HR allowed, allowed 9.49 hits/9, 1.42 whip, 77 era+ in 5 starts in the majors
5.30 era, 74 ip, 29:72 bb:k, 15 hr allowed, allowed 10.37 hits/9, 1.54 whip
last year at AAA:
4.91 era, 73.1 ip, 28:59 k:bb, 13 hr allowed, 1.27 whip
over his career: only topped 8 k/9 once (2005 in clinton – 155 IP and 2008 in oklahoma city)
2007 AAA: 3.44 bb/9
2008 AAA: 3.50 bb/9
2008 MLB: 3.28 bb/9
over his last 171ish IP the guy has allowed 33 HR.
WHY does anyone think he is more than a #3 at BEST?

I don't get it either.
He got clubbed in his first stint in OKC. He got clubbed even worse in his 2nd stint in OKC, yet still was subsequently called up. If someone isn’t ready, don’t call him up. This is reminiscent of us calling up Volquez in ‘06 even though his control was horrible (he had the worst BB-IP ratio in all of minor-league baseball among all starting pitchers with 75 or more IP, even worse than Thomas Diamond’s and fellow walk machine Radhames Liz). What a surprise that Volquez got destroyed and that two years later his control is still pretty bad. He was rushed to the bigs unfinished.

I’m all for getting Bailey. I have to think that a change of scenery would benefit him.
But….I hope that no one who wants to bring him over thinks that he’s necessarily going to step right in and be a cog in a good rotation. He’s kind of a mess right now, and he’s still really young.

I brought up the idea of a Bailey for one of our catchers deal to Will Carroll last weekend, and he said he could see it. Will also said that the stories about Bailey not being very responsive to coaching are also true, and that the Reds question whether or not he really wants to play baseball.
Bailey might be a good “buy low” candidate, but yeah, he’s apparently a real mess at the moment.

“Royals and Rangers..

Why would the Royals want Blalock? To play 3B? Nope, Alex Gordon is there. 1B? Nope, stud prospect Kila Kaaihue is going to be their starting 1B next year if not by September. DH? Nope, not with Billy Butler there.
Why don’t we just keep Blalock until Andrus is ready to go and Young subsequently has to be shifted to 3B? Pick up Blalock’s option for next year, let him play until Andrus is ready, and if Andrus is ready by the deadline, deal Blalock then. If Andrus isn’t ready until late next season, just keep Blalock for the whole year and hopefully he’ll have performed well enough to be deemed a Type-B FA after the season (even though he didn’t/won’t do much this year) and get us a draft pick.
