Minors 8/7: Something to really cheer
Since the bats were silent and that game sucked let's turn our eyes toward the positives going on down in the minors tonight. A very nice group of pitchers are on the mound and well
Down in Clinton Quintero had a solid start:
6ip, 6h, 2er, 0bb, 2k
and uberly loved catcher C. Santana was 3-3, with a HR and 2 RBI. Oh, and J. Ortiz had another solid inning in relief, for his 3rd save of the season and a line of 16g, 21ip, 12h, 6r, 4er, 0hr, 10bb, 16k and 1.71era. Not bad for a 17 yo in full season ball.
Reclamation project Zach Parker, formerly of the Rockies, 6ip, 3h, 0r, 1bb, 6k for the Roughriders. Beau Jones had another perfect inning of relief, as did Laughter.
Vallejo was 3-5 and don't look now but Manny Pina was 2-4 and now sporting a .304 average in AA.
Neil Ramirez went 2ip, 0h, 0r, 1bb, 3k for Spokane. He was followed up by another great outing by Z favorite Wilfredo Boscan 3ip, 1h, 0r, 0bb, 5k. This pitching by committee thing seems to be working in Western Washington.
O'Campo not doing so well in AZ, though the four Ranger errors may be the cause of his struggles. 4ip, 4h, 5r, 2er, 2bb, 5k. The rooks are down four nothing in the 5th.
And in the other late game the Blaze in Lancaster where pitchers go to die, Greg Swanson is on the mound. His line so far: 3ip, 7h, 3er, 1k.
So it appears more is going right down on the farm tonight than in Arlington. Oh and David Murphy, get healthy soon. 4th outfielder my ass.

i thought it was a feliz night

didn't Feliz
pitch last night? Besides lots of good pitchers did well and a few of the better bats in the system also have good numbers tonight. I just needed something positive after that shitty game against the hated Yankees. Especially when we waste a great start by Feldman.

That’s Eastern Washington.
Also, Laughter had a walk.
Also, don’t forget that BB for Cristian (especially for him).
Also, I need to get a life.

heh - sing it, sistah
Santana’s homer put the Kings ahead in the bottom of the 8th to set up Ortiz’ shutdown 9th for the save.

Johnny
not in the Blaze lineup. Hmmm.. just got me thinking. Hell we all know he needs to be at Frisco.
Berkery is at third base for Frisco and no Adam Fox who sucks.
Johnny Whittleman is clearly the best third baseman right now

Jason Cole just put up a Whittleman interview
JW seems like a fantasist. Claims his approach at the plate is geared for the upper levels and everybody will see him proved right when he finally gets a promotion.

I'm about ready
to give up on him. Geared for the upper levels but his numbers are sagging repeating a league for the 2nd time? Give me a break.

numbers sagging?
I don’t think so.
Johnny has cranked it up a bit. He;s hitting .297 in his last 10 games

but he’s always been able to get hot for a bit. Not impressed, and his defense still sucks.

Here's some noise ...
Spokane has an open spot in the rotation tomorrow night. Wieland hasn’t pitched in 5 days. Promotion? Or will Nevarez just cover the start again? Maybe Miggy is lookin’ good enough to try the NWL? And are they setting up a promotion for Ramirez to CLN to take Quintero’s spot in the rotation there? hmmmm
Mathis must be headed to FRS or OKC to continue rehab because tonight was his skedstart for the AZrooks. [shroomspeakdoubleplusgood]

Hey shroom
do the rookies have playoffs? I just wonder if the AZ league team might be kept together just like the other playoff bound teams.
by Hull Fan on Aug 7, 2008 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Playoffs - Yes, IIRC
I think the 1st and 2nd half winners play 1 game for the “title” – something very minor like that. Maybe SRL can verify that if he sees this. Looks like the Rangers squad is leading the hunt for the 2nd half title. I could see one of the college relievers getting promoted to SPO late if Hulett would like his bullpen shored up for the playoffs. I don’t think they need any starters or bats.
Murphy’s 1-2 with a double tonight so far – go Clark.
by shroomer on Aug 7, 2008 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
One-game playoff btwn 1st and 2nd half champs. Last year, both winners coincidentally had an off day on the last day of the regular season, so they went ahead and played the ‘championship’ on that off-day while other regular-season games were still going on. Yeah, it’s that important.

"uberly loved catcher C. Santana"
Sad to say, I think his catching days may be over. A couple of weeks ago, he was pulled from a game after only two innings behind the plate. Maybe they’ll work on him at Instructs.
Also, “Glenn” Swanson.
And Boscan was ridiculous tonight.

I knew it started with a G. I also knew that Spokane was in Eastern Washington, but why I wrote Western I don’t know.

Santana
Not to count chickens, but Telis’ numbers are just beautiful in the Dominican (Giambi-like, even Bonds-like BB:K), plus Felix is getting a Teagardenesque defensive reputation.
Give me Cristian as the premier LF thumper prospect and we can call it a day. Here’s hoping his plate discipline quits sucking. I’m looking forward to the kid’s career.

Catcher defense
in Pina and Felix the org has two very strong backup catcher prospects. I wish they’d hit just a bit more.

I think he is more of a hitter than a catcher at this point
judging by the # of PBs and Stolen bases against. I know nothing about how he calls a game or handles pitchers but assume it is very raw as well. Could be that he moves later?

Don't know
Probably will do instructs or ST, but not both. Will have to see how other things in my life play out.

Boscan
Wow, you weren’t kidding. Surely someday, some of this good news on the pitching side could leak up to the major league level? The minors have been full of pleasant surprises this year.

Maybe it's Boscan
and not Ramirez who’s being set up for a promo to CLN. CLN has Beavan and Main and pray for rain – they could use another nasty starter for the playoffs. I think the innings would work out nice for Boscan – getting him a reasonable chunk above his innings last season in the DSL.

Wouldn't be surprised...
...to see a college-aged reliever get bumped to Clinton soon. Say, Murphy, Springston, Schlecht, Brader, or Gutsie. That’s what Texas did last year—added Laughter and Hyatt near season’s end. Clinton’s been playing with only 24 for quite a while now and can add someone for “free.”

Scott what is your take on the whole
“were not going to play santana at catcher for a year” thing? Do you buy the idea they were trying to keep him healthy and get 400AB for him? Sounds odd to me as he apparently needs to work on his catching skills as well. I don’t get their approach with him this year.
