Victor Rojas

Is anyone else here as beaten by Victor Rojas as I am?

Nadel and Grieve are obviously greatness.  Lewin is a little too gay (for lack of a better term) for my liking a lot of the time, but at least he comes across as enjoying himself during games and he has good chemistry with Grieve, so I can handle him.  To me, Rojas just comes across as a whiny know-it-all.  He's overly critical of the Rangers (and their opponent) when something wheels-off happens and he spends too much time editorializing instead of just describing the action.  When I'm listening on the radio, I mainly want to get a good picture in my mind of what exactly is going on, not hear Victor Rojas' two cents on everything.  I don't have to have Lewin-Grieve level homers (Nadel certainly isn't), but I would at least like a guy who acts like he's having a good time during games.  Besides, isn't that what Vince Cotroneo got fired for?  To me, Rojas is more negative than him.  Plus, he seemingly has no chemistry with Nadel.

Rojas reminds me of one of those bitter former players you sometimes hear who think the game was ten times better back when they played, only he doesn't even have the credibility of actually having played.  He just got to go to the clubhouse with his daddy back in the day.

Also his "big fly" home run call sucks, he uses the phrase "oppo-taco", and "middle half of the Xth inning" doesn't make any fucking sense.

Rant over. Who's with me?

Using “gay” as a synonym for “bad” is as stupid as someone saying, “Don’t be a Jew.”
Hopefully in the coming years people will stop seeing homosexuality as a bad thing, and thereby stop using “gay” as a derogatory term.

by naropean on Aug 8, 2008 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

"gay"

you could say flamboyant or pansy or even girly (which I guess would offend an even larger group).

But I agree that using the term “gay” is not cool. No reason to offend people and it’s not very descriptive to begin with. I get what you mean (everybody gets it) but you are going to make people mad and you’re always going to have to come back with “In the BaD radio sense of the word” and it’s going to be more trouble than it’s worth.

BTW, I’m not going to take my language cues from radio DJ’s. As a whole, they could all drop dead and the world would be a better place. Losers – all of them.

Using the word “gay” is offensive, but stereotyping everyone that performs a certain job function as “losers” and saying that the world would be better if they dropped dead is OK?

Agree for the most part

especially about the negativity. It’s telling that he’s critical only when something goes wrong. I prefer analysts that point out plays (bad or good) that don’t work the way their supposed to. I do think he and Nadel do have some chemistry and it seems like they have a good time hanging out. I think Victor’s a good guy but needs to ease off on the curmudgeon thing.

I think that Victor

would be better suited for either the play-by-play role on television or play-by-play on the radio. He seems pretty knowledgeable about the game, and he always has random knowledge about the game, sort of like Lewin and Nadel. That being said, I don’t want it to happen here in Texas. When Lewin and Rojas were working together, there were a lot of times where I was thinking, man they’re talking a lot, I wish one of them would shut up. The thing I like about TAG is that he keeps his comments brief, short, to the point. I think that TAG is a good color commentator, even though some of his statements are well-duh (but aren’t all color commentators like that?). TAG fits well in the booth just because of his knowledge of the Texas Rangers franchise – same with the great Eric Nadel.

A buddy of mine sent me a link telling me I was getting crushed over here…that’s cool. Broadcasting is subjective…so it’s virtually impossible to please all the people all the time. That being said, I respect your opinions…good, bad or indifferent. I’ve tried over the years to not get emotionally involved with every pitch or play but I just can’t do it. I’m a die-hard fan at heart and my reactions on the air are the same as they would be if I were watching the game at home. It can be good and it can also be bad. Either way, I want this team to win…plain and simple.

Two things…the blog that was referred to here is something we’re all trying out through the end of the year. Josh and I will be blogging while Tom and Eric will be answering questions…it’ll be alternating through September and maybe into the off-season. Just one of the many new initiatives the Rangers are trying out. Secondly, I’ve said this before and will reiterate it here…if you have any questions or comments about the team or want to take a shot at me, feel free to email me…I won’t take it personally and I’m interested in what Rangers fans have to say. I’ve answered every email sent my way and would be more than happy to continue the trend. vrojas@texasrangers.com is the address.

Thanks, Victor...

Nice of you to respond. I do, however, agree with the original post. I tend to grit my teeth whenever Nadel steps away from the mike. The irony is that I remember the organization saying that Cotroneo was let go because they needed someone with more enthusiasm to be the #2 guy. Well, Vince had it, Victor doesn’t. What does come through is arrogance, something that we don’t get from Nadel, and that sure does make me fish for the on/off switch.

by TedFord on Aug 8, 2008 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

funny thing is

I think Victor is actually better now than when he started on the Rangers broadcast.

Maybe there was some adjusting period going from Vince Cotroneo, who I liked, to a new voice and style – but over time I think it seems to work.

All announcers talk too much, so I would not say that is unique to Victor or anyone else. He seems to work in his comments within the flow of the broadcast

Besides, at least he mostly talks about the game.

No one talks as much as Lewin does about nothing in particular – I’ve started to think Lewin just likes to hear himself talk since he can barely shut up long enough for TAG to do analysis. And they need to quite showing him on TV – those wide open eyes and freaky eye brows make him look like puppet – plus his head shaking maneurisms etc just make him hard to watch – but I do like his schtick.

Team chemistry trumps all!!!!

and it really can get on the nerves at times, especially when the rangers are loosing, it’s almost like he is a Radio Broadcaster since they have to talk more to fill air time, that is not needed on a TV broadcast, Tom is right on and for me he and Nadel are the best at what they do, Tom and Busby i think would team well together.

I remember Eric Nadel

guesting on a call-in radio show a few years back, and he got a bunch of calls from people saying they wished he would give less stats during the broadcast. I thought the callers were crazy, but those folks exist out there, and i bet they’re Rojas fans. Less stats, good cadence and timing and a nice voice. Eric, although i’m a huge fan, will never be the John Miller, Mark Holtz, Ernie Harwell… deep-voiced easy-paced announcer that a lot of people think of as the classic baseball-on-the-radio voice, but i think Rojas could be that kind if he backed off on the griping.

I listen to every game thats on FSN on the radio (no cable) and I actually like Rojas because of his ability to actually tell the truth no matter what it means for the Rangers. I like those analysts much better than analysts like Bob Ortegal, who are the biggest homers out there.
