Blackouts going away?

I hate the blackout rules.  I refuse to get MLB Extra Innings or mlbtv.com because I am not going to pay for out of market games if the Rangers, who are 4 hours away from me, are blacked out.

But according to Jeff Passan, the blackout rules may be lifted as of next season.

Good news for everyone, I think...

Maybe the smartest thing I've seen anyone in baseball say.
"I would like to think that if we increase the popularity of baseball," DuPuy said, "it ends up being a good thing."

I never understood why MLB thought driving fans away, which is what their blackout rules do for folks like me who are “kind of” close to their favorite teams, was a good idea.

I get MLB.tv

since I’m in Florida, and I can use it to watch Rangers games. My roommate and I actually split it, so he can watch Red Sox games. But it is freaking ridiculous that because I’m in the State of Florida, I’m blacked out for the Marlins (not that I would watch them) who are 7.5 hours away from me, and the Rays (who I might watch, when they play the Rangers or just because they’re fun to watch) who are 4 hours away. The whole, reasonable expectation that I could make the game theory, is bullshit.

Let me put it this way… I’m blacked out for the Marlins who are 7.5 hours away, but I’m not blacked out for the Braves who are only 5 hours away. That state borderline really is a bitch though.

On first glance

I thought the title of the post was “Blalock’s going away?” And then I said to myself “I thought he was already gone”.

AJM...

or those in houston, how many Rangers games do you get if you don’t get the Extra Innings package, or mlbtv.com?

I’m just curious because in DFW, I get maybe one or two Astros games a week, so I was curious how that worked in Houston…

If you have DirecTV or Dish Network...

...you get just about all of them.

If you have cable, you get maybe 10%

Comcast sucks that way

They always play the Astros, regardless of what FSSW has scheduled.

ugh.

As someone in California, I can watch all Ranger games on mlbtv, and it is great, but I would see no point in buying it if I were a fan of my local team (San Diego). It doesn’t make any sense at all. What I don’t understand is why they don’t just show the local team’s TV feed – commercials and everything. That is what they do with radio.

Does anyone know if this will also pertain to other restrictions? For example, Fox Sports West out here carries the Angels games, but in San Diego they are blacked out because we are Padre territory. I’d like to catct those 19 Ranger games a year if they were on real tv…

I can watch most Ranger games on mlb.tv

I’m in Atascadero, about 3 1/2-4 hours north of Anaheim depending on traffic. It’s a similar drive to Oakland, but I’m considered to be in Angels territory. If the Rangers play the Angels, I’m blacked out on mlb.tv from watching the game because I’m supposed to watch it on TV.

I have DirecTV. When the game is on FSN West I can watch it (and can watch the Dodgers on FSN Prime Ticket), but if the game is on KCAL or KCOP (I forget which has the Dodgers and which has the Angels) then I can’t watch it, because I’m far enough away from LA that those aren’t considered my local channels by DirecTV. So if the Rangers and Angels are playing and the game’s on one of the over-the-air stations, my only choice is Gameday Audio.

Other than that I don’t miss cable at all.

AJM

I don’t know if this an option for you, but I live in Galveston, and use Direct TV. When the games are on FSSW I can watch them. When they are on MY27, I’m able to catch it on MLB EI, but I never order it, and don’t pay for it. I’m only paying for the regional sports package. The only downside is not being able to DVR the game when it is on MLB EI.

OK my work computer won't let me reply for some reason so I'm adding this down here

AJM—I’m curious how that works though. I have Dish in DFW, and I only get the Houston games if the Rangers are on my27. If you can live in Houston and get “just about all” the Rangers games, can I get “just about all” the Astros games in DFW?

Being in Waco

I get all of the FSN and the other Rangers Network Games through Time Warner Cable (about 160 a year0 plus we get about half of the Astros Games, though I am not much of a National League Fan, Wednesday Nights ESPN game was blacked out but we got the FSN broadcast with Josh and Tom, if I lived in California or some other state I would have to pony up the bucks for the cable extra innings package, got to have Rangers BB

Blackouts Going Away

Well, there are a few of us here that can say that we contributed in some small way to this potential change with our emails to the commish’s office.

I can live with the blackouts on Sat. for FOX games and even Sun. night games for ESPN, it’s just all those other stupid blacked out games for no good reason that I have the problem with.
