Minors - 08/08

Spokane - 9pm - Nevarez?

Clinton - 7pm (all times CST) - Beavan (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Bakersfield - 9pm - Phillips

Frisco - 7pm - Feliz (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

OKC - 8pm - Lizard

Beavan was shaky in the first, striking out the leadoff guy but giving up a walk and 2 singles.  Got a DP to get out of the inning though.

Neftali struck out the side in the first.  Gave up a walk though.

Here's some draft signing stuff from EG to take up space.  Nothing new really, just what we all figured at this point.

http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/08/ripped-from-the-headlines.html

The deadline for signing draft picks is a week away and the Rangers still haven't signed first-rounder Justin Smoak or second-rounder Robbie Ross. The club remains in contact with Dustin Bledsoe, the agent who is advising both. For now, the Rangers are not concerned.

The Rangers also remain interested in Harold Martinez (19th round), Charlie Robertson (29th), John Reutigger (35th) and Jack Armstrong (36th). All are seeking bonuses above the "slot" recommended by Major League Baseball.

"We've got open lines of communication, but we're not close to a deal with any of them," Daniels said. "I'm not optimistic or pessimistic, just realistic. Given the deadline next week, this is the process we've come to expect. I hope to sign all of them but that's probably not going to happen. A lot of them have good school options that they're considering."

Beavan's first

The K was swinging on a change. He got squeezed on the walk, with both the manager and pitching coach upset with the umpire. The two singles were a bunt and a bloop into no man’s land. FB velocity was 89-90 from what I heard.

For Frisco, Steve Murphy tripled and scored on a Chad Tracy sac fly, and Manny Pina has a single so far.

The radio announcers

but still, great start

by zywica on Aug 8, 2008 8:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He's learning how to pitch

all over again Z. That is my take, at least. I am very encouraged by him lately.

This team has had a pretty good record of drafting pitchers lately. Perhaps they loved BB’s body and arm, but hated his motion. So, they change his motion…he loses velo, but learns how to pitch. Now that he is getting his mechanics figured out, he starts to K batters again. That would be pitching, not throwing…and that is very good.

That is my 1/4 arsed opine, fwiw.

make me not really care how our minor league pitchers perform. the juxtaposition of mendoza and galarraga this season pretty much summarizes how jinxed this team is when it comes to pitching.

well for starters i wouldnt trade away, lets seeeeeee 4 great young pitchers

and then i would improve my last in the league defense and pitching, especially when my pitching is near the bottom every year. i would trade away my good hitters to get some good pitchers because i actually know how to recongnize good pitching, the hitting will always come, no matter who we have

you obviously are too ignorant to realize JD is not good for this franchise

we could/should be a great team right now if he didnt come here. he really is the reason we are last in nearly every pitching category.

If you really are a rangers fan then you would not want Chris Young, John Danks, and Armando Galarraga not on our team. For those 3 guys we got absolutely nothing, i have no idea where Michael Hernandez is???

and no

we’d be an average team with a good young pitcher, a below average guy and an innings-eating starter that can’t stay healthy. We’d be a bit better, but nowhere near a great team.

I think some people are just so idiotic that they can’t recall what this team was like a mere 3 years ago. It’s like their collective attention spans only goes back as far as the last time they heard Randy Galloway state an opinion that they couldn’t wait to regurgitate on the nearest message board.

Seriously, if the extent of your contribution here is: Well der, I think Chris young trade was bad, you really should just douse yourself in kerosene and light a match, because then at least we’ll have entertainment

we have the most runs in baseball

so if we had a rotation of Young, Danks, Galarraga, Padilla, Feldman. thats a combined ERA of 3.91. So yes we would be a GREAT team with that rotation. but you obvisouly dont care about us winning, instead you spend your time thinking of funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnny ways of people dying. CONGRATS

so let me ask you this

if you don’t like the direction of this team, you don’t have a good understanding, or even a basic understanding of baseballs statistics, and you absolutely refuse to either participate in meaningful discussion or read to educate yourself, what the hell are you doing on a blog?

This isn’t a forum for you to bitch and rosterbait yourself raw nor is it a place for you to show everyone how badass you are because you share the opinion of Randy Galloway and can regurgitate it verbatim. This is a place of actual decent discussion about the topics at hand – which in this case is the minor league system. Seriously, why the hell participate if all you can do is bitch, and bitch quite ineffectively at this point?

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

what educational point have you made exactly?

that the Chris Young trade sucked?

Agreed, so does everyone.

That the John Danks trade didn’t work out?

Yeah, everyone can see that.

That Armando Gallaragga is having a really good/lucky year?

Once again, thanks a lot, but anyone with access to the internet, which seeing as this is a blog, is everyone, knew that

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:07 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

with all of that, how has JD done good

you still haven’t answered my question

he has done some good but it definently doenst out-weigh the bad

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 1:08 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

because in the long run

gallaraga is no great loss, John Danks is unfortunate, but not a complete loss yet and Chris Young was just an awful deal, but one that didn’t hurt us nearly as much as some would believe.

Yeah, losing Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young and John Danks really sucked, but the suck is far outweighed by putting together one of the better position player corps in the majors and getting a lot of good players in the minors.

I think the fact that guys like Beltre, Feliz, Ramirez and gang all worked out in addition to his good run of drafting outweighs losing one great player (Gonzalez), one should be great player (Danks) and one good player (Young).

And honestly, name me a GM and I’ll show you his worst inexplicable trades. The only way to not made any bad trades is to make no trades at all, and that’s the worst possible thing any GM could ever do.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:13 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

well-put

I do like getting those guys you mentioned, but IMO the odds of them getting to the bigs and playing at the same level as danks, young, and gonzo are not good. I do love that we got Feliz, he is basically a guarantee to have some success at the big level, its just the could-bes that have killed me, knowing IF we had those guys we could be good then again if we didnt have hambone and bradley then we wouldnt be anywhere.

Right now i still dont like where are big league pitchers are, but the real talent is in A/AA ball so when those players get up here will be the time to fire or keep JD.

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 1:19 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

now answer my question

if you remain completely close minded about statistics and would rather revisit old trades than discuss new ones, what are you doing on a blog focused mainly on statistical analysis and prospect updates?

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:21 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i obviously dont only focus on old trades

and this blog is more than prospect updates and stats analysis. its not really stats analyisis at all, its a place where the small amount of die-hard ranger fans can come and express their ideas for the team and their thoughts on players.

I love hearing about prospects and watching them but as for random stats, im not really a big fan of them. you can over-analyze everything but the only thing that matters is RUNS.

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 1:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You have this place confused

the place you want is the Newberg Report. That’s the place where “die hards meet” in order to give the same repetitive opinions over and over again.

This site, even in its prospect philia focuses much more on peripherals and genuine scouting information than surface stats.

Hell, the proprietor has links that explains EQA on this blog.

Let me ask you this then:

If Chris Young gives up a flyball and it is caught because Jody Gerut got a great read on the ball and makes the play, it counts as an out.

If Vicente Padilla gives up a flyball hit to the exact same place and Josh Hamilton got a late break and the ball falls for a double, Padilla is penalized.

If both pitchers made the same pitch got the same result, why should Vincente Padilla be penalized because his CF is not Jody Gerut?

That’s the type of questions that the majority of the people on this blog understands and you, quite frankly, don’t.

http://ussmariner.com/2006/08/29/evaluating-pitcher-talent/

Seriously, read it and don’t be a stubborn ass. It’s well written and very logical

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i already read it

i get what he is saying but he is really over-analyzing pitching.
how often does something like that happen? like once or twice a month. he is sayin a groundball helps although a groundball goes through a hole much more often that your example or a flyball goes over the fence.

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 1:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no he's not

what he is saying is that pitchers have very little control over what happens to the ball once it is put into play, except for whether the ball is hit in the air or hit on the ground. Once that happens, most of it is out of their hands.

yeah, some great fielding pitchers (Maddux comes to mind) can make a bit of difference as a fielder, but generally, none of them do much of a difference. Even without the CF example:

If Scott Feldman gives up a ground ball to the hole that gets by Michael Young (a guy with bad range), but Chris Young’s groundball to the same location is fielded and converted by Khalil Greene (a guy with average-good range), should Feldman be penalized because he doesn’t have Khalil Greene behind him?

What he is saying is that to evaluate how good a pitcher is, you look at how many guys he walks, how good he is at pounding the K zone, how good he is at keeping the ball on the ground, and how many pitches he gets guys to swing at. That’s all you can do.

The fact that Armando Gallaraga has a shinier ERA pitching in a better pitcher park in front of a far superior defense doesn’t make him a better pitcher than Scott Feldman. You still wouldn’t want to give him up for the pleasure of paying for Jason Jennings, but it’s no great loss that he is gone, because he is imminently replaceable.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:44 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you cant say that his 3.27 ERA is because of a good defense!

and we traded armando for michael hernandez. jw, where is michael hernandez? according to the baseball cube he has 37 at-bats with the mets organization this year

i dont see how you can think era is pointless when it judges how many runs a pitcher gives up, which is the only category that matters. yes, it is not the best way to evaluate a pitcher but it definently is not useless

Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 1:48 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

it is flawed

not necessarily useless but flawed. There are some skills that are unsustainable.

Gallaraga has allowed a 15.5% LD, that’s bad. He’s got a 45% GB rate, that’s average to slightly below average, he’s struck out 6.3 guys per game, that’s pretty good, but walked 3.2 guys per game, which is pretty bad.

So of all the skills you need to be a good pitcher, he does 1 of them well and one of them at an average rate.

That’s not the mark of a good pitcher.

You take that guy and put him in Arlington, and you get Luis Mendoza.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 9, 2008 1:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

actually i misspoke
