So, is Josh still the MVP?
I heard on the radio broadcast tonight that Hamilton is hitting something like .260 since the AS break, and at game's end tonight, his average had dropped to .300 even. I'm wondering if, despite all the wonderful publicity and the jaw-dropping home run derby, he might be slip-sliding out of the favorite's spot in the MVP race. ARod did win the prize hitting .298 recently, I might point out.
For awhile, it appeared that Kinsler might be his chief rival, but Ian has also cooled considerably. Justin Morneau is lurking in the shadows, and he has nice hardware already on his mantel. Can Cliff Lee swoop in and carry off both the Cy Young and the MVP? The last AL pitcher to win an MVP was Dennis Eckersley in '92.
Is Josh going to have to step it up a bit offensively or do you think his feel-good story can suffice?

No, he shouldn't be the MVP.
Yes, I think he’s still the favorite. Writers love RBIs.
That said, he’s not at his lowest point this year if I’m not mistaken. A while ago I’m pretty sure he was around 9th in VORP, and last I checked he’s in the top five and only a few runs from first. And his +/- fielding has gotten closer to average (though it’s still below average).
In other words, a couple weeks ago when discussing the MVP I said he wasn’t even near the top of my list, even though I want him to win, and was getting to much credit. Since then, I think his case has actually improved (though possibly because other players have regressed).

OT: Mendoza
We have to stop starting Mendoza and his “sinker”. He can only throw that pitch and he cant even command it. I dont really care who starts instead of him but we have to give someone else an oppurtunity. I’d like to see Gordon start….....no but seriously we should give Nippert a try at starting. Mendoza has had 10 starts and in only one start was he anywhere near good, besides its not like hes a really young kid, hes 24. IMO hes just a worse Kam Loe. I dont agree with the idea of only getting ground-ball pitchers, everyone of them on our team sucks. Now the ones that aren’t groundball pitchers, Padilla, Hurley, Guardado, and Feldman have done well.

MVP
Really is going to depend on how teams finish. It’s still too early to tell right now. A couple years ago Vlad won MVP based on his September, when he did a lot of damage against the Rangers. I think that’s what it’s going to come down to. If Boston makes a furious rally and overtakes Tampa a guy like Youkilis could win. He has very good numbers. If the Yankees come back a guy like Rivera might win. He has never won any major award and he is having one of his best seasons. Or Morneau could win if the Twins make the playoffs. Josh could still win but he is going to have to pick it up and finish strong.
As for the Cy Young I think you have to give it to Rivera or Halladay or Cliff Lee. I bet Rivera wins it, though, based on what I said earlier.

A lot of it depends on who makes the playoffs
Voters give considerable weight to team success and to guys who help their teams win “important games”, meaning the one ones later on the season. It’s myopic as hell, but that’s baseball writers for ya.

ha… well, I do get tired of Evan Grant and his shortsighted writing about the Rangers. He does lack foresight or scope and has a short view of the problem.

Morneau or Quentin as of today
neither have had a let down all year, and have been steady and hit in the clutch, can’t say that about Ham, he is still learning to deal with all of this i think, that all star game attention may have been more curse than it was a help, but man it was fun to watch.
by TRFAN on Aug 9, 2008 8:13 AM CDT 0 recs
+1
Agree with all you wrote. We have to remember, also, that basically this is Ham’s first full season in the bigs and that he must be going through a learning curve. But it bodes well for the future that he should do nothing but get better throughout the next five or six years.

He will finish in the top 5 but won’t win. If the Rangers were going to make the playoffs then both Kinsler and Hamilton may have a shot.

Maybe it's just me
But Josh appears to have lost some weight, and looks a little fatigued. It’s been a six monthy whirlwind to this point, hope he uses time away from games to rest.

I haven't noticed the weight.
But it’s DEFNITELY not just you with the fatigue.
That gives me great hope, though. It allows me to believe he’s going to be even better in future seasons as he gets up his strength and re-adapts to baseball.

Word
But I give the edge to ARod cause of defense.
And to be fair I was saying that he’s the best player in baseball so I don’t see how you could make an argument for anyone else to be the AL MVP.
Other than Tom Sizemore’s black son, most of the other candidates for best player in baseball reside in the NL, imo. Hanley, Pujols, Berkman, etc.

Arod does not get it and not just because he plays crappy defense
his numbers largely come at non clutch times, in blowouts (either way) etc., on the same Yankees team if you want a guy who knocks in clutch important runs take a look at Jeater or Johnny Damon, they are clutch players in my opinion
by TRFAN on Aug 10, 2008 9:29 AM CDT 0 recs

That's ridiculous.
Arod’s career numbers:
with RISP: .302/.403/.553 – God, he sucks.
Runners on base: .311/.397/.587 – who would want this guy on their team?
tie game: .298/.397/.574 – DFA him now, please
down by a run: .298/.398/.584 – new levels of suckness
runner on 3rd, late in game, 2 outs: .361/.396/.617
It’s a wonder he hasn’t been forced to retire now with such terrible hitting.
