So the lack of offense has been blamed on injuries

and I agree that is certainly contributing. But with that in mind, would it hurt to shuffle the lineup a little bit? Like maybe moving Kinsler into the three hole, Young to the five and maybe either Byrd or Cat into the leadoff spot?

Just a thought.

J. Hamilton dh .300
C. Davis 1b .283
M. Byrd cf .272

by Steal Home on Aug 9, 2008 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a terrible idea

But I wouldn’t advocate moving Kinsler out of the spot he’s done so well in. I think it’s a better idea to move people who are struggling around, not those that are doing well, especially in such a difficult spot as leadoff.

by sggut95 on Aug 9, 2008 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh...

Not a pretty lineup at all. At least Salty and Davis are hitting a spot higher.

So I assume Boggs’ shoulder still hurts and he is day-to-day. Or is it more serious than that?

Now it makes sense:
OF Brandon Boggs is not playing today. HIs right shoulder is still sore from a head-first slide he made into second base on Thursday. He was supposed to play left field last night, but manager Ron Washington moved him to DH at the last minute. Boggs’ absence puts OF Jason Ellison in right field.

The two biggest disappointments of the season. I’m hard pressed to think of anyone else even close. They’ve gone backwards this year.

but the only backwards we know of that he’s gone is in health, not performance, like Salt.

Those are the two biggest disappointments???

Not the “ace” of the rotation being crap. Not our closer blowing each game this year?

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope

I don’t think Millwood or Wilson have been nearly disappointing as the other two this season.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 9, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree mightily

Two young players not breaking through this year is disappointing. Having your veteran starting pitcher never be able to make a start and on the rare occasion he does, gives up 5 or 6 runs is much worse. Plus he’s getting paid millions. And this was the year CJ was supposed to guarantee himself a closer spot for the future and instead we’ll go into next season still having that as a question mark. McCarthy being hurt sucks, but at least he isn’t getting paid millions to not play and I believe this year won’t go against his service time (or something like that from what I remember reading). Salty not crushing the ball also sucks, but we weren’t depending on him to crush the ball and have plenty of other options if he never makes it.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

x
Two young players not breaking through this year is disappointing.

If they just hadn’t broken through, that would be one thing.

McCarthy won’t pitch in the majors this year, and Salty, the cornerstone of the Teixeira trade, has been terrible both offensively and defensively.

Guys who are supposed to be elite level talents regressing is much more troubling than what’s happened with Millwood and Wilson.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 9, 2008 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

cornerstone???

He was the best known player without a doubt, but it wasn’t like he was the true cornerstone of that deal. And Salty hasn’t exactly gone 0-4 in each of his starts. There are positives in his season even if you don’t feel the need to recognize for them. For instance his pitches per plate appearance and his nice walk rate. I see no problem in being patient with him as he has to go through uneven playing time as long as he keeps up that patience.

After last season, if you had that high of expectations for McCarthy, you were wrong to do so. Your level of disappointment with him might be based off having too high of expectations, but when you are talking about a guy who is being paid 11 million or whatever and is supposed to be your innings eater, the “ace” of the rotation, that is a guy who you are right to have higher expectations for.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on

You aren’t seriously going to argue that Salty wasn’t the biggest piece of that trade, are you?

And I don’t understand why people want to suggest that I just don’t want to recognize Salty’s positives. He hasn’t been good defensively, and has a VORP on the year of 0.0. He has a .240 EQA this season…PECOTA projected a weighted mean of .276, and even his 25% projection was a .250.

He’s been a disappointment. Yes, he’s young, and I’m not writing him off, but his value has decreased significantly since he got here, and pointing to the number of pitches that he sees to try to provide a positive just goes to show what a disappointment he’s been.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 9, 2008 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Salty was the most well known

and most ready to make an impact on the Major League team, but Andrus was also a huge part of that deal and rated very highly as a prospect. I don’t know if that deal had any one main piece since you have many analysts mentioning Andrus’ great potential and of course Kevin Goldstein has been on the Feliz bandwagon for a long time. Harrison was also a pretty big part of the deal, a strike throwing lefty ready for AAA when the deal was made.

And describing Salty’s eye at the plate is a big positive when you are talking about a 23 year old. I”m not arguing that he has been great with the bat all year, but I do think that there are very positive signs with his bat right now and think that next season, many people will be jumping back on the Salty bandwagon.

And I still don’t understand how he is the biggest disappointment on this team. Were you expecting him to be hitting clean-up for the team right now?

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I was expecting better...

...than a 680 OPS from him this year.

He, and McCarthy, were both supposed to be young stud players. That’s why I consider them bigger disappointments than, say, Millwood (who, fwiw, has been better than either McCarthy or Salty this season). Millwood is a guy who is basically a placeholder right now, who likely won’t be here past next year. McCarthy and Salty were guys who it was hoped would be upper-echelon level players for several years to come.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 9, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

They still can be

You act as if they have no chances at all in the future. The only they have done this year is show that this isn’t going to be their breakout year.

AJM

Calm down. Don’t take your frustration out on me, ok?

I’ve never debated the fact that he’s been horrible, just said there might be a reason for it. He’s been playing under shitty circumstances all year – platooning killed him after he was first called up, and he was playing hurt once he did get a chance to go full time. And then just when he did start to heat up, he got religated to backup catcher. When you go 4-5 days between playing, you’re just not going to improve your game very much, I don’t care who you are.

inconsistent playing time

for a young player isn’t exactly the best way to go about it if you want that player to do much

-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

No question

But it is also hard to say that playing 50% of the time is a valid excuse for not hitting, particularly when you are a catcher and are only going to start about 75-80% of the time if you are the starter anyway.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 9, 2008 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

but if you are trying to get

your 23 year old catcher who is supposed to have the bat to be able to play nearly every day, you are going to have to give him a chance to get hot with the bat instead of benching him every other 2 days or benching him right as he starts getting hot.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 9, 2008 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on

There’s a mssive difference between playing 50% of the time and playing 75-80% of the time. Saying that there isn’t is actually kind of stupid. When you have a struggling young player like Salty, giving them inconsistent playing time is one of the worst things you can do to them. Aside from the week or so before he hurt himself after Laird went on the DL, Salty hasn’t had any truly unimpeded playing time to try and straighten himself out.

So to conclude, yes, I admit he’s had a shitty year. But he hasn’t yet been given, or able to take advantage of any true chances to play and improve. He’s still a promising young player, and it’s not prudent to give up on him based on his 2008 season.

CHICAGO PITCHER JOSE CONTRERAS LEFT THE GAME IN THE TOP OF THE SECOND INNING DUE TO A RUPTURED LEFT ACHILLES.

If true, he may be done until the middle of next year.

He hurt his achilles because he’s a 47 year old man trying to cover first base.

I don't care about the race

but watching this team struggle like this is a beating. They can’t do anything right now and their lineup has taken a huge hit with Murphy, Boggs, Bradley, Blalock, and Young not in it. They need the day off and get the non DL’d players healthy and rested as well as guys like Davis, Hamilton, and Kinsler who could use the off day.

Sigh...

another shitty game.

I just wish the guys on this team could stay healthy. These injuries are far past annoying and are bordering on absurd at this point.

Just off the top of my head: Millwood, BGL, BMac, Blalock, MY, Board Game, Murphy, Boggs, Hurley, Padilla, Gabbard, Jack, Jennings, Mathis, Murray, Rheino, MaxRam, Duran, etc. I know some have been minor injuries (especially Boggs hopefully) but this is crazy. A young team can’t compete with this pitching staff and all these injuries. It’s just impossible. The Rangers have tried, but it seems like their will has been broken the last few games now.

Salty Sucks

He sucks. We should have traded him before the deadline because his value only drops more and more every time he touches a bat or a catchers mit. Catchers who hit .210 and have below average defense don’t last long in this league.

How can they keep saying that we are so deep at the catching position when Salty is terrible, and Ramirez is destined to be a DH.

They way I see it, we only have Laird, and Teagarden if he is the real deal.

Ramirez’ destiny is to be a DH. With that being said, why was bradley not traded in June when his value was at an all-time high. Talk about missing a golden opportunity. This guy can’t stay healthy being a DH?? We could have gotten two strong, if not top pitching prospects from someone.

JD is terrible!!!!!
They look worn out now. 11 straight games in 100+ degree weather will do that to you.
