OT: Josh Howard Hates America, and probably Freedom

Josh Howard Hates America
In a video posted on YouTube, the swingman is shown at Allen Iverson's charity flag football game in July. When the national anthem is being sung, various participants are shown mugging for the camera. When the camera gets to Howard, he says: " 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black."
Probably the entire Maverick organization hates America, hates freedom, and hates Apple Pie. David Stern was right to conspire from keeping them from an NBA title.

Well

He must love Dallas, cause he’s shot his trade value to shit.

how is that Cuban's fault?

I’d rather have Cuban than not…this team would still be wallowing at the bottom with the pigs if not for him.

umm

In order to get into Wake Forest, Howard needed an SAT score of at least 950. Howard did not get a 950, saying his score was “somewhere in the 500s”.4 He therefore spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia

Howard

How dare he refer to the National Anthem in such disrespective manner when this country has given tens of millions of dollars so that he can choke in the playoffs?

Just because you have freedom of speech, doesn’t mean you have to exercise it making idiotic remarks.

so

I made the decision two years ago to take a Josh Howard jersey instead of Dirk when given the chance. I always like the “underdog,” or “unsung hero,” and that’s why I made the mistake of passing up a jersey of the best player in franchise history.

do I burn this thing, try to sell it on e-Bay, keep it stashed away?

do I hope he can redeem himself? if not in the eyes of the public, at least on the basketball court? can he even do that?

a friend of mine has come to the conclusion that Josh is legally retarded. I’m not sure I’d go that far…I think he already had some things brewing when his college coach, godmother (or godgrandmother, whatever) and great grandmother all passed away in a very short period of time and that he slipped into a downward spiral, and that sure that will have an effect on him, but the guy is lacking in common sense, and is a complete opposite of the person I thought he was his first 4 years in Dallas. and even while at Wake.

dis. a. pointing.

Meh

If he could pick up his play then I wouldn’t care if he pissed on the flag and then burned it at half court with what’s left of his blunt before every game.

Of course, doing it at half court would be bad but I honestly don’t care if he smokes a little weed and “disrespects” the Nation Anthem.

That's not what you said...

I could care less if he smokes marijuana and he certainly has the right to not respect anything he should choose, but my problem is with this from your post.

then I wouldn’t care if he pissed on the flag and then burned it

Yes, but that...

…does not preclude that I also have an opinion that is contrary, and if I fail to make mine known, I, by my silence condone it.

I personally wouldn't care

symbolism doesn’t do much for me. Pissing on a flag (of any countries) is the same thing as pissing on any other piece of cloth to me.

flags

Don’t you figure pissing on a flag hurts some people’s feelings?

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Sep 19, 2008 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's kind of their problem

not sure there is anything I can do about it.

If folks wouldn’t get butthurt about it, I’m sure the flag-pissers wouldn’t do it. When you get all riled up at a flag-pisser/burner, you have just conceded defeat to the flag pisser/burner. They have gotten exactly what they wanted.

I wouldn’t piss on any flag, American, Russian, Iranian, whatever, because I generally just piss in toilets.

"Oh well, McCain is pretty communist anyway,... we can be 70% communist with McCain,"-Sharky

by DJCahill on Sep 19, 2008 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a difference...

between quietly registering your discontent, as I did, and “getting riled up”. The act is still something that is a horror for some. For you, it may be “just a piece of cloth”, but for others it is more. I don’t think that can be minimized. You response, though has merit. See below.

We can imagine no more appropriate response to burning a flag than waving one’s own, no better way to counter a flag burner’s message than by saluting the flag that burns, no surer means of preserving the dignity even of the flag that burned than by – as one witness here did – according its remains a respectful burial. We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents.

— Justice William J. Brennan

by pro82 on Sep 19, 2008 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is nothing I can do

for those that it is a horror for. There are people in the world who are hell bent on riling them up.

One thing I learned a long, long time ago. You can’t control other folks feelings. I believe any legislation to spare someones feelings is probably also doomed to failure. I think it makes good political redmeat to talk about banning it, but I have to agree with Brennan, all you do is dilute freedom.

"Oh well, McCain is pretty communist anyway,... we can be 70% communist with McCain,"-Sharky

by DJCahill on Sep 19, 2008 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes,

there is something you can do for them. You can register your displeasure of the act in any of the ways Justice Brennan listed, or by merely breaking the silence that condones it.

"The path you choose, you also choose its destination..."

by pro82 on Sep 19, 2008 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually,

if there was blanket silence, I’m guessing it wouldn’t happen.

The folks who are doing it are doing it to get a response, don’t give them the response they want, and it goes away. Registering displeasure just encourages him. You know what they say, don’t feed the trolls.

"Oh well, McCain is pretty communist anyway,... we can be 70% communist with McCain,"-Sharky

by DJCahill on Sep 19, 2008 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't believe...

that he made the statement with malice, so a quiet statement of displeasure I believe was warranted. You may have the understanding, patience, temperment to keep your silence, but coming from my background, I do not. I would prefer to err within my conscience than to keep totally silent and allow those who feel as I do, to believe by my silence I am condoning the act.

There has been debate on this subject since the end of the Civil War, and you and I will not solve the issue. However, it is my belief that those acts outlined by Justice Brennan are appropriate or as I said earlier, merely breaking the silence.

How can you hate freedom and smoke marijuana (or whatever he does)? That’s contradictory.

Did you like Never Scared?

I thought it was terrible. The whole thing was one unfunny dick punch after another. One of the worst comedy shows I’ve ever seen.

Which is a shame cause I thought Bigger and Blacker was a masterpiece.

He’s got a new one coming up for HBO I think.

I don’t have much faith in him righting the ship at this point, but I’ll give it a shot just to see if maybe he’s decided it’s okay to be funny again.

Well

I read Cuban’s thought process as, here’s some of the hate mail I’m getting from Josh’s quote. Readers, acknowledge there’s still a problem of racism in this country.

The benefit of the doubt is he’s trying to be constructive about racism. His post is sarcastic, but the possibility exists.

I guess it depends where you fall on reposting/acknowledging those emails. At first I thought it was gratuitous. Now, I don’t know. Those emails really happened…about that I have no doubt.
