Tuesday morning things
That sucked. 23 games to go, and I'm ready to for this season to be over with.
Mike Heika's game story is about Ron Washington's concerns that the bullpen is being worn out. If that's really a concern for Washington, then I'm not sure why he would have yanked Kam Loe after 3 damn good pitches in the 6th inning. The more I watch Washington, the more convinced I am that his in-game management, and in particular, his handling of the bullpen is not a strength of his.
Washington also says all three of his catchers are going to play, although Jarrod Saltalamacchia hurt his elbow yesterday and is having an MRI on it today, which could impact whether we'll be back down to just two catchers the rest of the way.

That’s the understatement of the year. I think Wash is a great guy, and team obviously likes him personally, but some of his decisions really make me scratch my head.

understatement is right
I know there are other skills a manager needs, communication with players, motivation, dealing with the press… but isn’t in-game management far and away the most important one, the one that has the biggest impact on whether you win or lose?

AJM doesn't think so
And also because I think that the impact of a manager on game situations is somewhat overblown, while the impact of a manager in terms of his managing people skills is underrated.

Not really sure Earl Weaver or
Billy Martin were wonderful “people persons” either but their teams usually played a smart brand of baseball and they made losing unbearable.

I wouldn't be afraid
to make another detail-oriented hard-ass the next manager.
It’s great that they all love Washington but this team plays a style of baseball that is devoid of fundamentals and is unpolished.
They don’t get beat because they lack talent, they get beat because they’re stupid.

was a good game manager and a horrible people person.
Torre is a marginal game manager (specifically bullpen) but a good people person. Bobby Cox has been known to make some fairly crazy in-game decisions but is recognized as a good manager to play for.

i would be shocked
If Wash is still the manager next year. I think JD is going to be given one more year to see what he can put together but i honestly think the collaspe over the past month and a half is going to send Wash packing. I would not be the least upset if that happens. I agree with AJM completely in his assessment of RWs ability to manage during the game and how to handle the pitchers on the mound and in the pen. So many times this year he has pulled someone who is throwing well and in comes someone else only to see them give up a lead or blow a close game. (Last night was the perfect example!!!)

I agree
Evan Grant has referenced this on two seperate occsians saying that RW’s strong points are player relations and media relations, but his in game managing is lacking. I understand that there are alot of pressures on the manager to balance a bunch of different things but if he is unable to make ingame decisions then what is the point of having him around. I am tired of heareing of RW using his gut when it comes to managing the game. His gut is full of KOOL smoke just lke his head so get hime outta here.

We've been waiting for him to "grow into the job" for almost 2 full seasons now
And nothing has changed with his ability to manage games, as evidenced last night.
Why would we punish ourselves with another year of stupidity when we could give the job to someone like Matt Walbeck instead?

Just a hunch, but I bet the Rangers don't pass over guys like Jaramillo/Howe if Washington's axed
Though Howe was Ron’s hand-picked right-hand man, so take that for what it’s worth.
Don’t think Walbeck is considered as a legitimate managerial option just yet, but then I don’t think Washington’s gone after this season either.

Arguments can be made...
…about the other questionable moves but this one stands out because I just don’t see how you can defend removing Loe last night. Barring any type of injury to Kam (I haven’t heard about any) he should have started the 7th last night. Sometimes I think RW is simply dead set against any reliever going back out for the next inning in a close game.

I think that's where this will be headed
I can’t see them firing him. Worst ERA in MLB, yet 12 teams have worse records. I think they bring in a pitching coach with a lot of cred and power.
Also wouldn’t surprise me if Howe is shown the door and they bring in a new bench coach. The concept of bringing in a seasoned guy that Wash was familiar with was good in theory, but it may have worked in inverse of the intention. Howe seems way too worried about stepping on Wash’s toes. A bench coach should be the guy that brings the manager off the ledge when he is going to do something dumb.

I don't think that he has anything to do with
the fact that over-matched rookies have started 39% of the games this year and the two alleged “studs” of the rotation — the two guys that have started the most games — have respective ERA+s of 86 and 89.
RW makes some dumb moves, no question. And those dumb moves sometimes lead to bad things. Even if RW’s dumb decisions are accountable for a quarter of run on the ERA, the team still has the worst ERA in the league.
Being last in ERA and first in RPG has to potential to create a volatile clubhouse cocktail. I think Wash has done a remarkable job of making sure the clubhouse hasn’t exploded.

Responsibilities of a manager
There really aren’t many, here is what I can think of, with Washington’s grades:
1 – Putting the right guys in lineups, organizing the rotation. Getting guys playing time — C+, Wash gets guys into games, has handled the Salty/Laird platoon well, but the outfield platoons never quite made sense to me. The rotation has been a disaster, but doesn’t really seem to be his fault.
2 – Don’t screw up in-game decisions. This includes substitutions and pitching changes. — C- He relies on the wrong guys in the bullpen (i.e., Wright), and he doesn’t do a great job of using some guys (i.e., Madrigal). But his bullpen results are definitely graded on a curve, since it has been a chaotic group out there.
3 – Player management – Related to #1, he’s handled the Laird/Salty situation well, lots of rookies have played well this year for him, and a certain potential trouble makers have been well behaved (Bradley) . But there have also been some problems (Ponson, CJ) which may have been better addressed before they blew up. B
4 – Fielding (Washington Specific) – Wash was hired to help this team field better. I still cringe whenever a ball is hit on the ground. D
5 – Absorb media ire – I guess he’s good enough, but this is an easy job that really only affects how easy it is for beat writers to file their stories. B+, mostly because it seems irrelevant to the team’s ultimate winning.
Anyway, overall Wash probably gets a C or C+, neither of which is stellar, but he’s not ruining the team either. If a great manager like LaRussa or Cox is worth 2 or 3 games in the standings at the end of the year, and an awful one (Hargrove) costs 2 or 3, then I see Wash being, well, a wash. If a great candidate is around who wants to come to Texas, I can see letting Wash go, but otherwise, his work with rookies has been promising enough to keep him around.

Fielding
I don’t think you can fault Wash too much here. He can’t make diamonds out of pig shit. The problem might be, though, that they gave false hopes to these players being better fielders through some magic they hoped he could work. That may have made them reluctant to makes moves necessary to improve the defense like Tampa did this past offseason.
The Rangers need to make moves this winter to improve the defense. Move Young to 3B, put a stopgap at SS who is strong defensively and watch the ERA on the pitching staff drop by at least half a run even if nothing else changed.

Well, I half agree
You certainly can’t blame wash for not adding 6 feet to Young’s range, or fixing Blalock’s shoulder. But at times this year (particularly in April and recently), there have been some stupid, brain-dead plays in the field, which I think have to be at least partially the responsibility of a guy hired for fielding. He should have been able to make sure his players were at least be mentally ready to field the ball.
And I agree with your assessment of the team planning – they thought Washington would be sufficient to fix Blalock, Young, and Kinsler. But that isn’t really Wash’s fault (unless he said “If you hire me, I’ll fix those three guys”), who knows if he did or not.

Wash i think is a good guy and a great coach
But he is very much lacking as a team Manager, until he learns to manage the bull pen why not let Andy Hawkins run the pitching end of things, make the changes, decide who comes in, and no more automatic put ins or removals (if it’s not broken, don’t fix) if a guy is pitching well leave him in until he is not, don’t just bring a guy in the 7th or 8th just because thats where you think he should come in. until he learns that this bull pen will continue to loose games.

probably true the team seems to try to play for him. I still think it is too late in the season for Wash to learn how to manage the bull pen. They are, after all, worn out due to injury of the starting pitching and general suckitude of the talent this team runs out to the mound night after night as starting pitching.

Wash as a coach
I think he had a reputation for being an outstanding fundamentals coach at Oakland. Here, what were considered his coaching strengths have been some of the worst areas of the team – namely, infield defense. Not sure if he is actually doing any coaching, but his message of good fundamental defense has never been realized. This team plays zero good fundamental defense night in and night out. I think it is unfair to say Washington is a “great coach.”
