Not that I'm a Botts defender
but whenever they used to call him up they would immediately bat him clean up, which I always thought was a bit stupid. Now with Davis we go the complete opposite, he’s proven he can hit a little bit, but we leave him hitting 9th.
Further evidence that our manager is sort of clueless.

Other SBN sites that I’ve seen only let the comments get to around 250 or so. LSB goes to around 500 which doesn’t really help. I don’t blame AJM though, I wouldn’t want to make a new thread every 250 comments.

MY has no trade value
Because of his piss-poor defense and silly contract. He can’t hang at SS anymore, and 3B is also a terrible choice. 2B is the only possibility for better infield improvement.

He's been pretty good tonight

Looks excellent
He has excellent command of three pitches tonight. He is locating his fastball very well and getting ahead in the count. His fastball is still sitting around 89-91, but his curveball has been very consistent. He has also mixed his pitches very well.
This looks like the McCarthy we were expecting two years ago. When his command is strong like it is tonight, McCarthy looks like a #2 or #3 starter.
He's thrown a ton of strikes
It is the Mariners of course, but they haven’t really been making the greatest contact with his pitches tonight. Their hits have been hard hit, but they’ve mishit quite a few as well.

eyewitnesses, how did he look tonight? it looks like his fastball barely hit 90…so was this just an average pitcher against a poor offensive team, or does his offspeed stuff allow him to be effective without a better fastball?

Don’t worry about his fastball. The guy is 6’7". If his mechanics are in order and he is taking his full step he is releasing the pitch closer to the plate than normal pitchers. To the batter with his release point being higher than normal, due to his height, and the ball being thrown from a shorter distance, due to his height, that 89 mph fastball is probably equal to a 92/93 mph fastball from a normal sized pitcher.

Question
I don’t post on here quite as often as some of you and am probably not as knowledgeable about the Rangers as some..But after last night, and that debacle bringing in Mendoza, I seriously feel that Nolan is planning on canning the Wash. He is a great guy, but like many of you have mentioned, his game management looks very juvenile.
Plus, as much as the players may love him, his act of bringing in guys that don’t inspire confidence has to wear thin at some point. I mean Avery Johnson was perceived as a great coach before he went Napolean on everybody and now no one likes him in Dallas.
Thoughts?

Wash
I think Wash gets at least part of next season before the Rangers consider canning him. It’s good to have a continuing presence at manager as a team moves toward competing again, so a change now might be considered a backward move. His managing leaves a lot to be desired, but it could improve as his relationship with Andy Hawkins develops.

But I’m not sure the Rangers want to can Wash. Based on some midseason comments, it seems to me Nolan actually seems to like him, because he’s “old school” like himself. Which means we’re likely in for another year of stupidity in 2009.

I am studying to be a journalist for TCU
and the thing I do like about Wash is his willingness to always talk to the media…Our baseball coach at TCU is far from friendly and when I got to interview Hamilton, Davis, etc., Wash came up to me, being a new face, and said hello. He was cool. But I don’t think he’s a great manager unfortunately.

Who is simply out of place as a manager. If he was our third base coach, I would probably love the guy, but he just doesn’t have the mind of a baseball manager.

The club has already exercised his option for 2009 and if the fire him I think they would have to pay three managers….the new guy, Wash and Buck for 2009.
