Saltalamacchia Done

According to the Dallas News Rangers Blog, Salty is done for the year.

He is headed for a second opinion, but:

The Rangers announced that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a strained right forearm muscle and will not play again this season.

Remember this is a desperate Ron Washington,

how he used Laird over Salty and how he has used Byrd this year while a kid like Boggs sits on the bench.

Hopefully we see lots of Teagarden but I’m not counting on it.

how often do you read that around here?

i disagree.

if you think that Ron playing the players that gave the Rangers the best chance at winning makes him desperate, then i guess you can consider him right. I dont see how playing Salty over Laird or playing Byrd over anyone while the Rangers closed to within 5 games of a playoff spot can be considered desperate.

Now, Josey will go on to explain that the Rangers were never going to be in the chase because of their pitching. And that is true. But, had the Rangers tossed the hat in and given up and just played the young guys and not given a shit about winning games, they would have done a disservice to Rangers fans. They were obligated to give their best effort to win while a chance existed of them making the postseason, even as slim as that chance might have been. Had they not done so, it would have been Josey over here raising hell about how the organization doesnt care about winning at the big league level and that big league production is all that counts and enough of the magic beans.

so its just another of Josey’s hypocrisy’s.

Had a bad feeling about this last night

In his throwing arm no less. Not good.

Hopefully this isn’t the mysterious type of forearm inflammation that somehow spans five months like it did with McCarthy.

Looking forward to seeing Teagarden getting at least 50 percent of the ABs behind the dish the rest of the way. Laird’s in a horrific slump right now.

"I don’t want to be doing this the next couple of years. I feel honestly like this was may be my last month as a Ranger. I feel almost like my time here is almost over. I love it here, but I want a chance to play everyday. I’m not saying I want to be traded. I just don’t want to deal with this situation again. I just want to know going into camp if I’m going to have a chance to play everyday.’’

But I still see Salty as a

25-30 HR / .850 OPS player but nowhere near as good defensively as TT.

There’s still a place in your organization for that type of player but I’m thinking he’s going to be mostly a DH in the future if he stays in Texas.

Salty's stock

has dropped due to both disappointing performance at the plate and lack of prowess on defense in addition to this injury. This is terrible timing, though, as it now becomes difficult to trade him in the offseason, which limits Daniels’ options.

his value

doesn’t really matter since he will be our catcher of the future. Maybe in several years when we’re trying to trade him for our newest catching prospect then it would.

Hopefully Teagarden plays well enough to up his value when we trade him to Boston this off-season.

that would be pointless

he’s still young enough to develop into the player that scouts and other evaluators think he can be, so it would be ridiculous to get rid of him for virtually nothing.

No way

He’s young enough that if it comes down to his value being so low that he’s no more than a throw in you just stick in AAA for a year and let him start every day to pump up his value a little. He has options left and he’s young. Don’t be hasty.

I think this may help his value

it does not sound like a serious injury, and it helps explain his poor CS stats this year.

i still think he could be dealt for a guy like Sanchez this offseason (perhaps with a guy like Lemon in the deal as well).

Salty

at this point, he should probably just be kept until next season. Let’s hope Laird can keep up decent numbers going into the offseason. I still think a team like the Marlins makes sense for him. His style of play is best suited in the NL.

by clark on Sep 2, 2008 4:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh well

We already tried to fuck him up by bringing him up and using him as a backup catcher all season long. This is probably the best thing for him at this point.

My guess is that if doesn’t get dealt this off season he gets “Lairded” and gets to spend all next season in AAA. At least then he’ll get the development time he should have gotten this year when we made the horrendously dumb decision of retarding his growth for an entire season just because we didn’t have another viable backup catcher when Melhuse got injured.

Salty’s season makes me want to puke for a variety of reasons.

Salty for Bailey

I think JD is holding out on that trade hoping to get a more consistent pitcher in the majors. In the end, I think JD should pull the trigger before Salty’s value will be lower than Bailey’s.

Who else thinks Cincy would jump all over that if the trade was on the table?
