Brandon McCarthy = extremely impressive

Frankie Francisco = BEAST.

That is all.

With McCarthy, Hurley, and Harrison

all showing some signs of promise, I’m feeling alot better about having to wait for Holland/Feliz.

Hopefully Hurley comes back fine next year.

mccarthy

really the only games i wanna see the rest of the year are his remaining starts to see if he can keep going pretty solid. even though he has been pretty good the last couple of starts, i wouldnt mind seeing that fastball back up around 92-93 and the curve a little sharper as he keeps progressing.

tonight, it looked like all 3 of his pitches were very average and he got by on good command and possibly some luck.

McCarthy

I don’t know that he’s been impressive, his lack of a put away pitch is concerning, which probably leads to his high pitches per inning ….. But he’s been very effective and that’s all that you can ask for. Now Francisco? He’s been impressive.

Although I think that may have more to do with him still getting comfortable coming back from his injury. He had decent K rates in the minors so hopefully next year he will have fine tuned either his change or gotten a couple extra mph on his FB.

by bigsteve on Sep 2, 2008 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

His CU is unhittable, imo

When it has that sharp downward action. I asked BGR when he was still on the board if he was going to throw it more this year and he said yes, but maybe he needs to set it up better. If they’re whiffing on his fastball fine, but his change should put away hitters who can handle a located fastball.

agreed

I really think once he has confidence in his health that pitch will really take off. Hopefully he finishes this year strong and goes into next year with all these injuries in his rearview mirror and that pitch puts him over the top and back as a legit top pitching prospect

not really a proper place for this

but i was reading about the Marlins and their arb cases this offseason, and while we have all talked about how great it would be to land Nolasco, Scott Olsen is probably more readily available pitcher of the two. While his ERA and some of his peripherals are not as nice, he is still only 24, he’s a lefty, he has a solid fastball with late movement that compliments with a decent slider, and his WHIP this season is a very solid 1.33. I think the Marlins are tired of waiting for him to find that next tier, and they have a number of younger, cheaper options for next season. Could he be had for Gerald Laird? If not, who else would we need to include in such a deal?

by clark on Sep 2, 2008 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

For Olsen?

Given that he’s fought with teammates 3 times, I think Laird would be a fair deal.

by FirebatM3 on Sep 3, 2008 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Ditto

I’m not too impressed with Olsen’s personality or his potential. I’d much rather trade more for Nolasco.

certainly not his personality

but his potential is as high as most any pitcher we could bring in this offseason. he has very good stuff when he is on. it would be a risky deal, but it would take a much stronger package to land nolasco. of course, the guy to get is josh johnson, and he is arb eligible as well.

Saw this in the San Antonio newspaper

The SA Missions mgr comments on the grind that is the Texas League …

Texas Twister: Missions manager Bill Masse was pleased by his team’s progress this season, especially how it survived the grind of the Texas League.
.
"This is a tough league," Masse said. "When they say minor league baseball is a grind, I can’t imagine grinding it out any more than in the Texas League. The weather seems like it is 90 to 100 degrees every single game. Then, you have the poor travel. It seems like every road trip we go on or come back from, we’re getting in at 6 or 7 in the morning. Then you have to play that night.
.
"I tried everything I could to keep these guys focused. To their credit, most of these guys played hard all year."

"most of these guys"

So who’re the lollygaggers?

Reflecting on the game

lt’s a topsy-turvy world, and maybe beating the Mariners doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, but this is our hill, and these are our beans.
