Ron Washington expected back in 2009
Team president Nolan Ryan said Tuesday, five days short of the end of the season, that he expects manager Ron Washington to return to the Texas Rangers in 2009.
"I have no intentions of making a change at this point in time," Ryan said. "He’s under contract for next year. I think that speaks for itself."
"I think the players like him," Ryan said. "I think he’s gotten them to respond to them. I think that’s important. I really believe his intent is trying to get them to improve and address our shortcomings."
General manager Jon Daniels will also be back, Ryan indicated, as the Rangers stick to the plan to develop their own players and build a winner from within.
Read it here.
I really hope they get Wash some more/better help, especially regarding the handling of pitching. I am very glad JD is sticking around.
WWNRD? ...now we know.

Can't say that I'm surprised Wash will be back...
…but I can and will say that I’m disappointed.

hmmm
I’m glad that JD will be back and sort of ambivalent on Wash. Personally, I’d fire him, but I don’t think he is going to be the difference between this team contending and not contending.
I thought the following quote was interesting. Shows that maybe Nolan isn’t a dumbass that is out to get JD, as many here seem to imply. In fact, Nolan very well might be JD’s saving grace, as we know that Hicks is prone to shift courses in the middle of a round. I think Nolan is firmly on board with JD’s rebuilding plan, and has enough pull to make sure that Hicks sticks with it.
"We all agreed that we’re going to develop within our system. When you say ’develop,’ that’s not a quick fix.
“We still believe that that is the route that we’re going to take for this organization. I think we have shown that we are committed to that. I don’t think that when you didn’t see our record change from one year to the next you just dump the program that you’ve committed to.”

Agreed
My biggest problem is between JD and Washington in that JD has shown an ability to develop along a steep learning curve, with his early mistakes being just that – early mistakes. I guess it’s what you get when you hire a 29 year old as your GM. He has learned and made adjustments, though.
Ron Washington, however, has shown absolutely no improvement in his in-game management. He has shown an ability to relate to and get along with players, which was not there at first, but his game management – especially management of the pitching staff – seems to get worse with each passing game. Wash is infuriating and seems to be learning absolutely nothing. After two full seasons Washington has got to show some kind of improvement, which he has not. That is why I would advocate making a change at manager.

Can we get some adjustments
from JD as well when it comes to judging and trading for healthy major league talent?

Are you referring to Gallaraga or post-Gallaraga?

Coincidental or not?
Boy Blunder’s dumb-f trades seemed to stop happening when Nolan came aboard.

And as I asked you in the other thread...
…which moves are demanded by Nolan Ryan? None, by all accounts. JD is learning on the job; it has nothing to do with Ryan because Ryan isn’t directing him to make (or not make) any moves. It’s an illogical result you are landing on which has no basis in what Ryan is doing or not doing.

The fact that JD will be back is depressing news to me. Another year of crap in 2009. I’m ready to bring back Hart and Buck.

what on earth would another GM do to fix 2009 in one offseason.
the preceding post was a great success.
He'd trade away the farm system
and some of the younger players who aren’t plus performers yet to build an 88 win team and be lauded by many…temporarily.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I didn’t know I no longer had to have a subject lines. On the LSB Classic I’d always put x’s in there.
Thanks!

good news
i’m mostly glad that ryan acknowledges they need to stick to the plan of development. i’m very glad jd is staying and i guess i’m ok with washington seeing as the two will probably have 1 more season to try and improve.
I think washington is still learning, but needs to make great improvements to stay longer than next year

What happens if this thing
plays the same type of baseball they played this year, attendance continues to lag and they bolt the gate say 6-14?

Will you change your tune?

When I see legitimate improvement
my tune will change. I also expect most of this room to come correct on Nolan.
Now go find something to study…while this word is filled with lawyers, there’s not enough good ones.

Just wondering.
If the team starts out 14-6, will you change your tune? If not, I don’t see how it’s fair to make opposite judgment if they’re 6-14.

#1 Farm isn't "legitimate improvement?"
If not, then what is? Is it only the W-L record?
by FuturePants on Sep 24, 2008 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions
No, you will not change your tune
Even if the Rangers won the world series you would not give Daniels one iota of credit. You’d call him lucky that Ryan was around to help him do it.
In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love.
I would hope at least.....
that Washington is on a really short lease. I’m no baseball expert, but a lot of his in-game moves and lack of in-game moves ( ie. his constant love of Jamey Wright ) just had me shaking my head in disbelief…..
On the other hand, I do like what JD has been doing, besides the early stumbles….
"I should apologize to girls for saying Sexson threw that helmet like a girl. I’m not even sure girls do that." - TAG 05/08/2008
That's what I don't understand..
Wash is going to be on a short leash, desperate for early wins meaning there’s a good chance the team mirrors his desperation and gacks.
We are also going to see lots of Marlon Byrd hitting 5th and waaaay too much Gerald Laird instead of biting the bullet and letting young kids play, fail, overcome and develop.
That’s how your team improves.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Wash needs a quick start.
Another start to the season like the last two and he won’t survive April. I hope the starters help out more next year… stay healthy, pitch into 6th and 7th and let the bullpen have a normal season for once.
Happy about JD. I feel he is growing as a GM and needs to solidify who he listens to in regards to talent evaluation. Whomever advised Jennings over Galarraga should have no say in anything.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!
Growing asd a GM?
Seems to me that he is regressing as a GM. This season I think Nolan put a muzzle on him in regards to trading away more good talent for injury ridden players and cheap players.
The boy still has no clue to what he is doing.

You Want Kenny Lofton
or Max Ramirez.?
Eric Gagne or David Murphy?
damn
our pitching is already bad enough, we dont need his horrific bullpen management
and now next year we will lost another great player with daniels as GM, hopefully this year will only be the one-good-player-gone-for-nothing-year

Washington
I’d be happier if they let him go. I’ve said this ad nauseum, but for two years in a row the team has come out of camp and looked horrible, only to play solid baseball afterward. If that happens one more time, I’d be shocked if they didn’t fire him. Get someone in here who can run a training camp.
The bullpen mismanagement doesn’t bother me as much. When your starters can seldom make it through the fifth inning, any bullpen will eventually become unmanageable.
I've been saying...
that I thought both would be back and I’m glad Nolan has said as much. It will be a very interesting off season with player movement, that’s for sure.
As Z mentions above, I also believe Wash needs to adjust or change his approach with in game decision making. If he does that I think he could be a capable manager. Let’s face it, the best manager in the world couldn’t have won a pennant with the ML pitching the Rangers have had the last 2 years. I think Wash gets too much of the blame based on a few bad in game moves that really don’t have nearly as much to do with losing as the horrible pitching does. Show me good Ranger pitching and I’ll show you a decent managed team.

Re: Wash
That is why I have a problem with people calling him stupid, or a moron. He is neither. Does he have the experience of a Pinela? Hell no. I think he is capable of growing into the job, and improving his skills. If you ever listen to him, he admits he has a bunch to learn, and is learning every day. I am also quite sure JD & NR had some pointed advice during his “end of season” interview.
Frankly, given the pitching tools he had to work with, who the F would have produced better results? Hell, most managers would have had the entire team quit on them after the horrible start this team had. Ask SEA…
