Someone told me today...

…that they heard that the section of Meyerland where I live won’t have power until November.

I told that person people were also hearing that there were thousands of dead bodies floating in Galveston Bay and that there were fires burning out of control all over the island.

People are full of crap.

I’m just hoping we have power again by Sunday, so my wife and kids can come on back home. They’ve been at my dad’s place in Fort Worth since Tuesday of last week.

Meyerland

Has a surprising amount of info on Wikipedia.

Man that sux

the in-laws that were staying with me from League City had there power returned by Monday after the storm.

Looks like the power company’s are focusing on the worse areas and working there way out?

by laxtonto on Sep 25, 2008 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Power companies

They are focusing on fixing the things that will bring the power on to the most people.

A lot of the outlying areas, you fix something, and you bring 1000 people back at once.

Whereas in my neighborhood, and some of the well-to-do inner-Houston areas, like Bellaire, West U, River Oaks, Memorial, they are set up so that you fix something, it brings 10 houses back on.

So we are back of the line.

That's the situation

my buddy is in with his house in Klein…the houses across the street have power (and have had since last Thurs), but he still is without power.

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Sep 25, 2008 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

my in-laws live in Klein

they got power Monday night…next door neighboor doesn’t have power still.

Crazy.

Been there.

A few years ago, when I lived on Grapevine Lake, I went 11 days without power…and that was just a thunder/wind/hail storm.

From everything I've heard from the region...

…and yes, this is second- and third-hand information…

…but from everything I’ve heard, they’re making good progress and should have the vast majority of people back with power in the next week or so.

Are you blogging from the office? Or how are you doing this?

Only about

75% of the folks who lost power in the Houston area have their power back.

You should just move to Dallas.

Let’s be honest, if it didn’t suck before, Houston really sucks now.

I just got power

back on Monday, in the far north Spring area. I feel your pain. Do you need a generator?

Tom Grieve is my hero.

by tasan on Sep 25, 2008 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

If I tried to hook up a generator...

…I’d probably burn my house down…

This winter, we’ll probably get one and have it installed, though.

If

Bethany and the kids need any errands run in Fort Worth, and it’s inconvenient for family, send me an email. Can do.

Make sure it's one that runs on natural gas if it's going to be a whole-house generator

Having to refill the gasoline tank on one of those things would suck, especially for situations like this where it has to run a few days.

Sucks

we were without power for 65 hours, but we fortunately had it restored. We probably needed it more than you did though as we just had our 2nd baby born 9/16. I don’t think the hospital would have let us bring her home without power…they asked us like ten different times.

Hopefully it comes back on quickly for you.

I have power

Of course, I wasn’t in a hurricane. Nor am I within 1000 miles of the possibility of a hurricane. But I’m turning up the AC and turning on all of my lights as a gesture of solidarity.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

sorry to hear that

Just got mine up in Spring turned back on yesterday around 5:30pm. There was a caravan of elec. co. trucks from Michigan around the area who worked tirelessly to get our subdivision back on.

On the bright side

Think how cheap your electric bill will be!

by GoFrogs on Sep 25, 2008 9:43 PM CDT reply actions

No, it won't be

Our bills are going to be based on average or estimated monthly consumption, since all of the meter-readers are out directing the out-of-town repair guys around town, and thus aren’t reading meters.

Plus, we get to pay for all the repair work.

by Darrell McKown on Sep 26, 2008 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Doesn't really matter

Centerpoint is going to levy the cost on all billpayers, and the Electric Cos will pass it along.

I’m not sure deregulation really bought us anything.

by DJCahill on Sep 26, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Supposedly...

…the average consumption is going to be pro-rated for those who have had their power out, to reflect the amount of time power has been on.

That was my first reaction when I saw that it was going to be average monthly consumption, though.
