ode to Yankee Stadium
This is a great article on a guy's memories from Yankee Stadium. Haven't seen a more eloquent description about the difference between guys like A-Rod and guys like Bernie Williams. Sad but uplifting. A nice prelude to the playoffs.

People’s fascination/nostalgia with Yankee Stadium utterly eludes me. It’s old. It also sucked.

It's baseball history
it’s old and shitty, but it’s a really cool place and I’m glad I got the chance to visit this year.
Still wanna see Wrigley and Fenway.

Me too
Dirk, Ive got a friend in Manhattan which had friday game tickets. Planned my trip to see the Yankees Vs The Halos for rooting interests obviously. Crazy atmosphere around the ballpark before the games. People everywhere drinking and partying. The stadium is a shit hole, no denying that but its the nostalgia etc that people wanted to get a taste of before it is gone.

I enjoyed going to Yankee Stadium too
…but people will be drinking and partying in the new stadium as well, just the digs won’t be nearly as shitty from now on.
Yankee Stadium had a ton of history. It was cool to go there and say, “Babe Ruth hit here” or “Lou Gherig played here,” etc. etc. That does not make the stadium nice or enjoyable or positive or anything. It makes the history interesting simply because the building itself has contained so many cool stories and the building itself is very old.

Difference between ARod and Bernie
ARod is really freaking good

So was Bernie
At least I think a guy putting up OPS+’s of 129, 131, 147, 160, 149, 140, 138, and 141 in consecutive seasons while playing CF is really freaking good. But hey, that’s just me.

We had this argument around here a while back.
People tend to lump Bernie in with the Scott Brosiuses and the Paul O’Neilses as a completely average player who was elevated to supposed greatness based upon his laundry, when actually Bernie was really good.
Although it is worth noting that ARod was really freaking better.

He had a very nice peak
but it wasn’t long enough for me to put him in the discussion with Bernie who was better for longer at a much tougher defensive position than O’Neil was, though you’re right that I put my foot in mouth there when I said he was a completely average player. That was dumb. I should have left out completely average and just said he was a “player who was elevated to supposed greatness based upon his laundry”. He was a good player who was very good for a few years and got credit for it beyond what I think he was due. He had a of really great seasons though. Plus he had a really great cameo on Seinfeld.

I actually had a debate with a buddy a few weeks back about which ballplayer had the best Seinfeld cameo
O’Neil, Tartabull or Keith Hernandez?

Don't forget Bernie and Jeter
George teaching them about hitting in the episode where he got smart because he wasn’t having sex.

You know, as far as old ballparks go
Fenway is the one that should be meeting the wrecking ball, not Yankee Stadium. Not that I have any great love for either of those places, but Fenway is in need of overhaul/replacement far more than YS.

i disagree
went to both this year. they’ve done a lot to improve fenway over the last couple years. fenway was WAY cooler than yankee stadium. yankee stadium was dirty, really big, the seats are far away from the field. a lot of history but really a pretty crappy park.
