OT: Paul Newman Dead, 83
Paul Newman died Friday nite of cancer. Newman, in my opinion, is one of the greatest American actors to live and will be sorely missed. When I think about his films, he always played great characters, or at least, made the characters he played seem larger than life. Newman seemed to excel as the Anti-Hero, the character you liked for his faults. He was a giant in the movie business who, later in life, showed actors they can do more than just become old actors, as he created a whole foods company that donates all its earnings to charity.
Top 3 Paul Newman Movies:
3) The Color of Money - won him and academy award
2) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - played well off redford
1) Cool Hand Luke - powerful performance despite lack of dialogue
RIP

Hud
My all time favorite Newman movie and my favorite movie of all time is Hud. An amazing actor and all-around good guy.

My choice
As well. Newman and Patricia Neal can’t ever be topped for compelling interaction.

Neal
very underrated. She’d have been much more famous if she’d been prettier I guess.

Face in the Crowd
Clunky movie (albeit by a great director), but she looks goooood.
She had some infamous love interests.
Go Strangers.

RIP
My favorite Newman movie is The Hustler. Great performances by Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, and George C. Scott in that movie.
Also, it is nice to see a celebrity couple like him and Joanne Woodward actually stay together for 50 years.
A true legend.

I'm Sad
Hud is gone. So is Fast Eddie. And a legendary list of other characters that bemuse, amuse, and confuse you. RIP salad dressing man.

I shall have to purchase
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on DVD for Dad for Christmas. How many times we sat and watched that…from 6 to 16 for me.

Pour some out for Mr. Newman.
There’s a certain type of movie that I call the “Well, Now I Gotta” movie. It’s the flick where you come home late from wherever, flip on the TV, see this movie, and say “Well, now I gotta stay up for two more hours.” It’s not necessarily because you want to stay up; it’s because you have to watch this movie, because it kicks so much ass.
Cool Hand Luke is one of those movies.
RIP, Mr. Newman.

To Mr. Newman
Today I shed a tear and say a heartfelt thanks to you, who have brought entertainment and happiness to myself and millions. May your legacy shine as brightly as you.

Nobody's Fool...
I’ve always thought Nobody’s Fool is an underrated movie of Paul Newman’s. The 1994 film was based on a Richard Russo novel and directed by Robert Benton (Kramer vs. Kramer, Places in the Heart), and received Academy Award Nominations for Best Actor (Newman) and Adapted Screenplay (Benton). It features a great cast, including Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and an early performance of Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Newman’s character runs afoul of just about all of the guys in the town the movie takes place, and he eventually punches Hoffman, who’s playing a police officer.
Mr. Newman, wherever you are, you will truly be missed.
I'm tired of the suspense. Why won't they just tell us what they mean by "male enhancement?"

A great one
All of the films mentioned here are worth watching more than once, but one a recently watched on cable just because he was in it was The Verdict. Pretty good movie (and he was nominated for an Oscar). Also, Absence of Malice is good.
I agree – he was the definition of cool. My parents are in their mid-70s so I’ve watched all of his films (I think maybe my mom was the bigger fan – imagine that). But I only watched Cool Hand Look for the first time this past year (since it was a few years before my time).
Seriously, like was said before, if you notice a move of his you haven’t seen is on, watch it. Regardless what it is.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

And then there were six...
One of the things that I’ll always remember about Paul Newman is the fact that he landed on the original Nixon’s Enemies List, which had just twenty names. The group of living members now includes just Howard Stein, Morton Halperin, Sidney Davidoff, John Conyers, Ronald Dellums, and Daniel Schorr (who had the unlikely assignment of reading the list and not knowing his name would appear until seeing it at number 17).
Just an interesting fact about Newman, a man who wore many hats.

Seen it all
The guy was my age (39) in 1955. He was miles’ age in like 1934. That’s mind boggling to me, somehow, that he is still an active journalist with so much to offer.

Age sadness
I guess it happens a little at a time. I’ve had few favorite "anythings’. But as they die off, I ache a little bit. Ray Charles. Red Skelton. George Carlin. Paul Newman.

I watched the Hudsucker Proxy last night
Completely forgotten he was in it. Made me sad.
Absolutely loved the guy ever since I was a kid. Great actor and a class-act.
