An interesting Chronology

Dropped by Halo Heaven to see what might be posted there after the season finale with the Rangers.  Didn't have any quotable or referential content regarding the Rangers, of course, but there was a very interesting chronology put up by Rev listing how the Angels acquired their current roster.

Of interest to me was the mix of signing draftees, signing undrafted amateurs (a couple of eye openers there), making trades that turned out beneficial, and several free agent signings.   Two things to pay particular attention to.   The first is the total length of time it took to build the Halos roster.  The other is the relative sequencing of amateur draft signings, undrafted amateur signings, trades, and free agent acquisitions.  They searched for and collected some talent, got it to achieve improvement, then traded for needed positional skills, and finally went after or traded for high value free agents.

I think this is an instructive link.

Very interesting indeed

In the same vein Scott Lucas has something similar on his site.

What's the rumpus?

Definitely

Very much a similarity

There is also an old fanpost I made with the same information

Getting it all then finding out Scott had one as well was kind of facepalm.

Lackey

One facsinating thing about the Angels, to me, is John Lackey. I was curious as to what his contract was all about this spring so I looked into it and I was shocked, to say the least.

To begin with, I thought he was a free agent in 2009, only to find out the Angels have an ultra-cheap option on him for only $9 million. He is earning $7 this year (2008), and only $5.5 last year. He signed an extension in 2006, and in 2005, he was 14-5 with a 3.45 ERA over 209 innings, 199 Ks and an ok 1.33 WHIP. Plus, he’s got a World Series title under his belt.

As a comparison, that winter, Garland got 3 years, $29 million, Kevin Milwood: 5 years, $60 mm. Additionally, we also know the pitching market has been up for a long time, so what is going on with this contract?! I’m kind of in disbelief that Lackey would be so cheap for the Angels.

So, there is one of two conclusions to be drawn: either A) Lackey hates money, or B) Lackey loooooves him some Angels. I find it insulting to think that he would love the Angels as Mike Scioscia is such an unrelenting douchebag, so, he hates money?

I'd gladly take

that unrelenting douchebag instead of Washington.

That's a hard call for me.

Washington makes some of the dumbest moves I have ever seen, but man I hate Scioscia. It’s not like Washington personally lost 83 games for the Rangers this season because he is not a great in game decision maker.

by FuturePants on Sep 29, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't

I couldn’t handle Scioscia every day. I’d rather feel like we’re being outmaneuvered every day than look at that guy.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 29, 2008 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I really just really really hate Scioscia. Looking at Scioscia’s incredulous “how can that be a strike” face is almost as bad as Tom Coughlin’s “how can you throw that flag” face.

Concur...

I just couldn’t stand Scioscia managing my team. The guy is a first class ass clown.

I'll take a first class ass clown

if he can get something out of his players.

But

I don’t view that as a weakness of Washington. Players seem to play pretty hard for him.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 29, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They also seem to play for Washington

like they forgot their brains.

Seriously, you’d rather have Dumb Ass Washington over Scioscia?

No

Buck Showalter is a better game manager than Washington too, and I don’t want him back here. I’m not saying that I prefer Washington over this guy or that guy, just that I wouldn’t want to have to root for a team managed by Scioscia because of personal feelings. It’s sort of like rooting for a football team with Terrell Owens on it.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 30, 2008 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Scoscia

The guy’s a good manager. I absolutely can’t stand him, but only because he’s part of the La La La organization. I think Washington has some weaknesses and also some strengths, but damn, I don’t think you can compare those two guys.

He's okay

Don’t buy the hype. Show me a manager with his staff and I"ll show you a winner.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 29, 2008 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to say it

But Scoscia is actually good baseball manager, despite the fact that he’s a douche. And I’ll take the douche who can manage over the nice guy who can’t figure out his bullpen or lineup card any day.

Lackey

After 2005 Lackey was eligible for arbitration for the first time. The Angels were smart and locked him up through his arbitration years. Just like we did with Hank and MY and Kinsler and like we will most likely do with Hammy

you and me both

His dad was my P.E. teacher and his mom was my English teacher…He came up to the school to sign some autographs and I was able to get one, but I’ll be honest and say I didn’t really know anything about him even tho he had just won Game 7 of the world series so when I got him i tossed the autograph to the side…still looking for it till this day….I was a stupid little kid (8th grade at the time)

Bring on those

Latin pitchers. If our guys can match Santana, Arredondo and Rodriguez, we should have something.

Ervin Santana

I mentioned to Parks earlier this season that I think Ervin Santana is a pretty good comp for Neftali’s ceiling. I base that mainly on their build, ease of delivery, and high octane fastball.

Sounds like

www.texags.com. I realize not most here are Aggies, but that board is run by nazis and I basically told them to go eff themselves and to delete my username and profile because I was never coming back after they deleted a post of mine and gave me a one week ban for saying that Dennis Franchione should be fired. On that site, if you didn’t say something positive, it was deleted by the moderators.

If this one were run like TexAgs, I wonder who would be left?
