Walbeck, Howe out
Matt Walbeck and Art Howe are out as coaches for the Rangers.
Jim Colburn goes back to heading up Eastern Rim scouting. Andy Hawkins will be a candidate for the pitching coach job, which they will be interviewing folks for.
Gary Pettis and Rudy Jaramillo are, apparently, coming back.

WTF?
Howe, really?
Who the hell is going to shake Wash’s hand first after the Rangers win next year now?

I actually like that guy. Can’t really see how this could improve the team, but I guess we’ll have to see who replaces him.

zzzz snooze zzzz
The real shake in the blender should be Ron Washington if you want my opinion. He should have been fired already.
Good to see that Pettis and Jaramillo are staying.

but obviously our knowledge of the interactions with wash/JD and these guys are pretty limited.
so whatever, hopefully we have some good replacements in mind.

JD is making a mistake
HE (JD) hired Wallbeck because Wally was suppose to be an up and coming coach. So how does it make sense that Wash gets to fire him after Wash throws in one the worst management jobs in baseball history,AND as soon as we are 5 games under .500 in April Wash will be gone anyways, so why is he getting to make these decisions? Unfortunately it looks like JD is tying himself to Wash, which I think will end up costing both of them there jobs. And JD has done an overall good job here, minus a few trades that went the other way he has turned this program around and on the right track.

question
the defense was considerably below average (possibly awful?). does this reflect on manager, or does he get pass?
taking into consideration that wash was touted as defensive specialist (i specifically remember this with regard to hank), does your opinion change?
i am very underwhelmed by washington and find little to change my opinion that this is not the guy that you want in charge of overseeing the development of young talent once they reach the big league level. these guys will have a lot of maturing/development left when the reach this level, and washington doesn’t strike me as the next joe madden. of course, i didn’t know madden was a madden either until this year.

I never said he was Joe Torre
I said he should get credit for having to play with more rookies a Rangers team has ever seen and keeping them around .500. Yes the defense needs to get better but shouldn’t the whole coaching staff work on it with them not just Wash?

well...
not to be a revisionist, but did joe torre ever win anything with a sub-$100 million roster (or whatever really big number you want to use)?
i’m sure that someone will be quick to point out the season(s) that joe torre developed a lot of new players and groomed them into a major league force, but in the interim i’ll remember the last few years that he made nothing out of a lot.

He had some with Atlanta in the mid 80s
and a couple of decent finishes with St. Louis in the early 90s. Other than that, you have to look at the mid 90s Yankees where the Yankees actually didn’t have a 100+ million dollar payroll (it was around 60 million then). So yeah, Toree did win a bit when he didn’t have a 100+ million dollar payroll. Not much and when he did, it was with some amazing talent that the Yankees had.

He kept his team
busting their asses and getting better after a horrendous start. Was that not maturing/development of young guys…as in “never give up”? I sure as hell think it was. How many teams/players would have folded, quit, and put on their panties in the same situation?
By far the largest percentage of a MLB manager’s job is to keep the team behind him, with him, on the same page, and assuage the ego’s of these millionaires. Bunting, positioning, pitching changes and the like are often strongly hinted at by the coaches..that is their job. That is why it is so vitally important to have a bench coach you would trust with your life, and career.
Whatever you think of Wash, I feel he has strongly proved that he is a leader of men, and that is his primary job function.

I'm glad Howe is gone
I always wondered why he was here, save for the purpose of giving Wash “moral support”.
But as I stated in the pervious thread… it bothers me that they’re cutting Walbeck because he and Wash don’t get along. Walbeck seemed to have a pretty good relationship with the players, and seemed to be doing a pretty good job coaching our young catchers as well. But he’s gone because he couldn’t “gel” with a guy who probably shouldn’t be managing a baseball team, major or minor league. That sends the signal that we’re commiting to said doofus who can’t manage a baseball team, major or minor league, and that scares me. A lot.

The catchers as a collective sucked ass this season…no other way to put it. Walbeck did not come in here and “hang the moon”, he was below average, at best.

as a manager twice and went to the playoffs three times with the A’s.
He also got the young 90’s Astros team ramped up as well.
