Last nights attendance
|
here are the results including attendance around baseball. i stumbled across this and couldn't believe the Rangers were outdrew by Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. I know that the front office said at one point this year that overall attendance was down due to the lack of the red sox and yanks on the home schedule at that point.. now that the yanks have been here, does anyone know how their numbers stack up versus others in baseball or their previous years?

According to BR.com
Our average attendance is down to 24387 from 29060 last yyear.
Maybe next year, they won’t try a price increase after a bad season where they don’t acquire any name FAs in the offseason. They’ll be lucky to break 2 million folks this season.

There you go
Hicks is stupid when it comes to off the field issues such as ticket pricing.

The Rangers
have some of the lowest prices in baseball. Hicks may be stupid, but not because of ticket prices.

Yes he is when it comes to
knowing when to raise ticket prices. After the year they had last year he should not have raised prices.

Ticket prices are raised by almost every team in every sport each year
that is just the way it is.
by uthornfan on Sep 4, 2008 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And folks stay away
in droves from noncompetitive teams when prices are where they are.
Tough to worry about the attendance being down during the stretch for teams that are double digits out. Now that field tickets are $50-$100 a pop, I can’t imagine the incentive to see a team play meaningless games. There are a lot of teams, like the Rangers, that are essentially playing exhibition baseball. Ws and Ls are pretty much irrelevant at this point.
Even if you do get free tickets from a supplier or vendor, its probably not worth the gas or parking, unless you want to see Teagarden or some September callup.

I agree
but the Rangers games are dirt cheap compared to most of the MLB. You can’t really blame Hicks for raising prices when almost every team raises prices almost every year. It may be a stupid move from an attendance standpoint to raise tickets, but my guess is they raise them again this year.
by uthornfan on Sep 4, 2008 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i keep hearing that...
but when i look at other teams ticket prices, you may pay a few more bucks for an outfield seat or something like that, but a great deal of the teams have tickets in between 1st and 3rd at a much lower price than the rangers.
by Mateo-Leg on Sep 4, 2008 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you are dead on
The Rangers don’t appear to me to be “Dirt Cheap” compared to the AL, anyway. Compared to the Yankees? Sure.
Premium Infield seats.
Rangers $75 ($84 for Premium games)
Angels $85
Mariners $65
A’s $50 ($55 for Premium games)
Blue Jays $59 ($70)
Orioles $55 ($80)
Rays $54($72)
Red Sox $90
Yankees $400
Indians $110($110)
Royals $37($44)
Tigers $65
Twins $50($55)
White Sox $51($65)

posted ticket prices v real prices
season ticket prices for 2008 were $60 for premium infield..
http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/tex/ticketing/deposits.jsp
i am 100% that included free parking if you paid in full by end of november. that’s a couple of months early but saved another several hundred dollars.
the “prices” may have techinically gone up but there are doznes of promotions at any given time. nobody pays retail.
i think that the team raises prices in case the team is good. if that happens, they scale back on promotions. you can’t raise prices mid season.
as you can see, the rangers agree with above post that said games are meaningless now – the rangers are giving away free seats to the final six games if you make a deposit of $300 for next year.
by sam in so cal on Sep 4, 2008 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
However
most teams have promotions and discounts for season tickets.
The only way I know to do an apples to apples comparison is to use some common basis. I chose a common basis of single day tickets. I could have compared everyone’s season ticket prices instead.
At any rate, your point that Rangers tickets are “dirt cheap” really doesnt seem to be true.

maybe that’s b/c i live in LA where you can’t buy LAA lower level seats this side of the foul pole – sold out.
the dodgers sell lower level comparable seats for 120/130 according to website but the premium seats are a few hundred per seat per game
to your point, the rangers seats probably are very high based on ticket sales. if you gave me attendance numbers and team record (no team name) and asked me what tickets should cost, i would probably say 1/2 what they do.
i guess my problem is that i look at dfw as an upscale market and honestly feel that the seats are dirt cheap.

I don't know that I'd call DFW
upscale…but I agree with you that Rangers’ ticket prices are not overpriced.

at least average for baseball. Probably slightly over average.

i agree...
they aren’t overpriced , it;’s just compared to some other teams the premium tickets might be.
by Mateo-Leg on Sep 5, 2008 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because LAA is winning
and the Rangers are 16 games out. Of course the Rangers have to discount off of face price.
But your original assertion that the Rangers are “Dirt Cheap” is untenable. Their prices are clearly at least average, if not slightly above average.
As baseball markets go, I’m not sure why you would think D/FW is an upscale market, when D/FW enjoys one of the lower cost of living markets. It’s one of the worst franchises in baseball, consistently out of the playoffs, and the ballpark is located way out in suburban hell, there are a lot of uncomfortably hot evenings, and they now have one of the older stadiums in baseball. By 2012 it will be one of the 10 oldest ballparks in baseball.
This time of year, I can’t imagine why anyone would think going loading up the family, going way across town in traffic, to roast in the heat to see a glorified exhibition game would be a better option than paying half to a tenth as much to take the family to a movie at a close by, air conditioned, movie theater, and getting the kids back home in bed at a decent hour. Baseball price inflation has outstripped other, competing, forms of family entertainment.
I think they have priced themselves out of the “family entertainment” segment, and basicly rely on selling tickets to corporations for season tickets, and will get walkups if they are competitive, like a lot of other franchises in baseball. However, years like this, where they are double digit out, they should expect crickets at the ballpark.

cheap
cheap – i agree w/ t ball
complaining about prices is like complaining about parking.
unless i am mistaken, our prices stayed the same.
i know for a fact that season parking was absolutely free this year (w/ purchase of season tickets).
complain all you want, but $45 per seat per game for front row seats between the bases is a great value.
arlington has always been low – $16 per seat per game in the first season in the new ballpark – front row between the bases.
if you buy tickets to single games they are ridiculously expensive – but only by comparison to the discounts you get w/ season tickets. they are still pretty cheap.
has anyone every looked at what LA dodgers tickets cost in the premium infield seats??? $500!
i bought discount vouchers last year before christmas and redeemed them for lower infield seats to the yankees and red sox. lower infield cost me about $50 that way. it was a good way to pick up extra seats.
and there are 1/2 price discounts everywhere you look it seems.
someone reported here that teachers go for free to certain games IIRC

free parking
i know for a fact that all season ticket renewals paid in 2007 for 2008 received free parking – one pass for two seats up to two passes. we have six seats and got two passes free.
if you don’t take advantage of the offers extended, then i guess it adds up.
in the past we have received baseball bats (hank and MY), signed/framed pictures, etc…
by sam in so cal on Sep 3, 2008 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I go in with 3 other guys
We did not get any passes. We have had these seats for 8 years in the lower bowl.
The point is I will pay for the tickets no matter how much they are but it is the fans that are marginal baseball fans that bitch about the price of tickets. Regardless of what you say there is a right time and a wrong time to raise tickets and last year was not a good time to raise ticket prices again coming off a bad year and with the economy the way it has been.
We have got baseballs and other stuff as well.

Texas failed to average 40K per game during the NYY series
i’d be interested to see where that compares with past seasons where the Yankees have come to town.
by jamcadbury on Sep 3, 2008 8:26 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
FWIW, I quickly looked at some numbers
2007 was a bit of a lost year (tornadic thunderstorms disrupted the first game and led to a doubleheader that slashed significantly into attendance) with regard to the Yankees, but in ‘06 the Rangers averaged just under 44K a game for the Yankees’ three games in Arlington.
This year? Just under 38K a game.

Yankees
Might that have something to do with the Yankees losing the ambiance they once carried during their dynasty years? Maybe not but it seems like the Sox have taken over the banner as biggest draw in baseball.

with the Bosox in town and good weather predicted…if you’ve never caught a foul ball, today would be a good day to buy a ticket.

when weather wasn’t an issue?
That cannot play well with either Hicks or Ryan.

The small crowd was kind of pleasant.
We had our whole row to ourselves.
Still, as has already been pointed out, you can’t jack up prices after a bad season and expect numbers to remain intact. The slumping economy and gas prices have probably contributed mightily as well.

why have people show up when you can make more money by recieving the
largest revenue sharing check, win the WS, gut the team and then repeat the cycle.
Think of it this way, Loria has already recouped his MLB Francise fee
Forbes estimated that the Marlins posted $43.3 million in operating income last year. That operating income included earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. How did the Marlins rate in terms of operating income – a measure of profit – compared to their other 29 counterparts? They were first with the Dodgers in second at $25.5 million, a difference of 41 percent.
Cut your margins enough (low player payroll) and regardless of whether you have embarrassingly low attendance by rolling out a team of made up with what can best be described as replacement level players, take in a healthy level of revenue-sharing, and what you have is a prime example of Jeffrey Loria and David Samson living on corporate welfare.
