25 under 25
There has been a lot of talk about who the rangers top prospects are and I thought it would be interesting to do a value rating of the top young players who are under control of the rangers. This is where I currently see their value to the rangers going forward presented with their clock to FA and this years stats.
batters are presented with AB | H | XBH | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG
pitchers are presented with G | IP | H | R | HR | BB | SO | ERA | WHIP

pitchers
I really like pitchers that control the strike zone and both gomez and poveda are better than most of the Rangers prospects at hitting their spots. Hunter is another one that springs to mind in this vein but Poveda in particular is much better at ringing people up than Hunter, he’s consistently posted a K an inning which they tell me is pretty good. I expected Poveda to have a rough season this year as he is a pronounced fly baller in the CAL and was impressed by his finish. Something else to consider is that pitchers who use all their pitches as Poveda is pretty good at get punished a little extra in the CAL because the ball doesn’t move quite as well in the high air.
Obviously neither of these guys are going to come in and dominate a game Ryan Express style, but I think that they are probably two of the safer bets to be productive big leaguers because of their control.

Holland
Does he have to be protected next winter or because he was a draft and follow does he get an extra year?
Interesting list. The amount of good young talent in this system is mindblowing right now. Just think of the guys you left off.

Too lazy to find and quote mlb, but from Neyer's transaction thing:
A player not on a team’s Major League 40-man roster is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if: the player was 18 or younger when he first signed a pro contract and this is the fourth Rule 5 draft since he signed, OR if he was 19 or older when he first signed a pro contract and this is the third Rule 5 draft since he signed.
This will be the second for Holland since he signed, and he was over 18, so he’ll have to go on next fall, I believe.

I thought they changed it
to 5-4 years from 4-3? Is this correct? I meant to put in the post that I hoped someone would double check those numbers for me.

Yeah
You may be right. I think that’s outdated.
by Brett Perryman on Sep 30, 2008 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
they did change it
But for instance John Mayberry was drafted in 2005 at 21 years old. He has to be added to the 40 this winter. Holland was drafted in 2006 at 19 years old so he would normally have to be added next year. But because the draft and follow it may mess with the timeline

Yeah
I was just going off when he was drafted. All the other college guys drafted with him will be eligible for rule 5 next winter so i figured he would also. But the whole draft and follow thing may skew it and give him an extra year. Either way I don’t think we have to worry about losing him to rule 5 but the roster crunch may bite us in the ass.

Holland...
…has to be added after 2010. Not that the deadline should matter in his case.

Thats because of when he signed correct?
The only reason the deadline may matter is if we are in a roster crunch like we kinda were this year.

that he might see a major league batter by then.

It’s been too quiet on that guy. He doesn’t have to pitch this winter, but some news or something.

He's in Arizona rehabbing
He told me that he feels good and that he can’t wait to get back on the mound. I didn’t get an official timetable for his return.

question
why perez so low?

low?
Born: April 4, 1991
I didn’t really elaborate but how I tried to piece this list together is with a big eye for their current market value (obviously Poveda is too high by this rationale but it’s my list dammit!) and their likely contributions to the team. I think Perez has about a 1 in 3 chance of making the bigs at this point and obviously a pretty sizable flame out risk even if he does. Where would you put him?

I like this idea
I just wish that I could convince myself to rank McCarthy as high as you did.
Also, Feldman is 25 and would probably deserve to be somewhere in the 15-20 range.

yea
honestly I put him off to the side and drew arrows as high as 11 and as low as 24, I just really like his true talent level that much. I think he could have more natural talent than all but Feliz probably, unfortunately I too am losing faith that it will ever come out.

Madrigal should be in minors
With two options, he needs to be in the minors to learn how to pitch. He hasn’t had enough experience to be up here.
Also, what is Mendoza’s situation? Does he have options? If so, I would send him down to get his confidence back.

Mendoza has one left
I think Madrigal more than held his own this year. Yes he should be down in the minors still but he showed he could pitch in the majors.

Tommy Hunter
Has 3 options left

this year?
didn’t he use an option this year?
by bushe on Sep 30, 2008 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought the same thing
But AJM schooled me many of times on this topic. There is a caveat with options where if you use all your options before your 5th pro season you get a 4th option. Thus Hunter will have 3 more after this year same as Borbon. basically if you sign a ML contract right after the draft you get 4 options.

Wow...
Duran a spot higher than Beltre? Interesting.

Beltre
for my thinking Beltre has to prove he’s not a Corey Patterson starter kit before I get on board. Good Defense, Good Power, Elite Speed, AWFUL plate discipline is a recipe for someone who gets over valued. As for Duran, I think he is getting a bum rap for a down year in which he was really rushed and jerked around.

I know it's been said before, but
the great thing about the Rangers system is the distribution of young players and the depth at critical positions like SP, catcher, and CF:
1B – Davis
1B – Smoak
2B – Duran
SS – Andrus
C – Saltalamacchia
C – Teagarden
C – Ramirez
CF – Borbon
CF – Beltre
COF – Moreland
SP#1 – Feliz
SP#2 – Holland
SP#3 – Hurley
SP#4 – Kiker
SP#5 – Main
SP#6 – Poveda
SP#7 – Harrison
SP #8 – McCarthy
SP #9 – Beavan
SP#10 – Hunter
SP#11 – NeRa
SP#12 – Perez
SP#13 – Boscan
RP#1 – Madrigal
RP#2 – Gomez
