How about a flyer!?!
At MLBTradeRumors.com...
According to the AP, the Marlins released righty Sergio Mitre today. He would've been a non-tender candidate later in the year anyway. Mitre had Tommy John surgery in July, so he'll miss at least half of the '09 season. Mitre, 27, can be a decent back-rotation starter when healthy given his strong groundball rate.
Since he is recovering from TJ surgery... how about signing him to a backloaded deal. We'll pay him $500,000 in 2009 to rehab and go to the minors to work on his stuff and strengthening his arm. Then we see where he is in spring training 2010 and see if he can help us as either a starter or reliever. I would give him 2mil in 2010 and a club option for 4 mil in 2011.
Small dollar, low risk gamble to possibly strengthen our pitching staff when the kids arrive in 2010.

I prefer to fly
in planes that have working parts.
In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love.

I think one...
of the sunfish in my fishtank is a flyer. Centrarchus macropterus. He’s one pugnacious little bugger.
