Wolf worth a try?

Rob Neyer's Blog Comments:

"Why? Because the Astros are interesting. Since trading for Wolf, the Astros are 28-12. Have they played so well because of Randy Wolf?  Since joining the Astros, Wolf is 3-1 with a 3.80 and the team is 7-1 in his starts. So yeah, he's played his part."

Wolf keeping options open in 2009.

Inexpensive and solid when healthy.

He seems to finally be getting over his injury issues and could be set up for two or three years of nice success.  When looking over his numbers... I like him!

2.25/1 K/BB ratio, 4.28 ERA would be nice at RBiA.

Is 08 a fluke or is he getting back to the Wolf of 00-04?

Could be worth a 3 year, $27M deal to bridge the gap to our kids. It would be even better to pair him with Derek Lowe for a couple years and see where the chips fall.

Would a rotation of Lowe, Harrison, Wolf, Feldman and Millwood/Padilla be OK for 2009? Seems like a nice starting point to allow for patience with Hunter/Feliz and Holland by 2010-11.

not too interested

obviously, there are a lot of chips that must fall before we would consider Wolf, but still, Ed Wade deserves some credit for buying him off the scrap heap. I have been a very vocal critic of Wade’s moves so far, but that deal was solid, and it looks like he will be a type B for sure, and maybe even a type A with a continued strong finish.

He threw a six-hit shutout against the Cubs Wednesday...

…At the expense of 130 pitches. 90 of them were strikes.

Hey, you suck McBain.

Wolf

I was for acquiring him at the deadline. Good move by the Astros. As for us next year only if we strike out on our other options.

Oh and you seem to be leaving out BMac from your rotation next year.

For 3 years?

No effing way.
I don’t think he’ll get more than 2 years this offseason.

by chrisR on Sep 5, 2008 1:31 PM CDT   0 recs

No

I don’t think he’d do well in the AL, getting old, too much money for not enough pitcher…more fly balls than ground outs, what’s to like about this guy?

Well, let's put it this way

Would you rather have Wolf at 3 years/$27 M or Garland at 5 years/$65 M

I’d much rather have Wolf….

+1

A Lonestar in California

We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.

by lonestarJon on Sep 5, 2008 7:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's legitimate

But I don’t get the vitriol against Wolf at 3 years/$27 M while Garland at 5 years/$65 M doesn’t seem to be contested at all.

Not contested?

I’d contest that.

I dunno

I see bigsteve keep talking about Garland along with others, and I seem to be the only one who hates that idea.

Or at least along the lines of:

Not just no but hell no.

It's been bandied about

now and then. I’ve avoided most of the discussion lately of sign this guy or that guy. I just move on to other threads. I’m interested in Sheets and Lowe and maybe Burnett if the prices are right, but I wouldn’t go overboard on any of them.

Prices this off season are gonna be nucking futs.

That said, I think we’ll regret it if we don’t make a nice offer on CC.

He’s the best pitcher to hit the open market since the Big Unit. I doubt he’d come here, but we gotta at least try.

Sheets would be a nice consolation prize.

Lowe is a solid option as well.

Ahhh!

Um, no I’d jump on the fire JD bandwagon pretty quick if we gave out 5/65 to John Freaking Garland.

Huh?

The rare occasions I’ve seen Garland brought up, I’ve pointed out the stupidity of it.

Also
Would a rotation of Lowe, Harrison, Wolf, Feldman and Millwood/Padilla be OK for 2009?

What do you do with the one of Millwood or Padilla that doesn’t make the rotation? Put him in long relief?

What do you do with Eric Hurley and Brandon McCarthy? And if you want patience until 2010, why sign two old guys who are going to require 3 year deals?

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 5, 2008 2:18 PM CDT   0 recs

Age? Lowe is 35 but Wolf is only 32.

My thought with Millwood and Padilla was that one would be here and the other gone. No signings or trades means they both stay in the rotation: Padilla, Harrison, McCarthy (easy to forget him), Millwood and Feldman would be my Opening Day 2009 staff.

I would start Hurley at OKC to get him back up to speed. Leave Hunter, Mendoza and Madrigal at OKC.
Start Holland and Feliz at Frisco for the first few starts and move them up if they continue the mastery of AA.

Madrigal?

Why is he is in with this group? Hes a reliever. I think hes here for the long haul

Why would you dump Millwood or Padilla...

…so that you could add Wolf?

That doesn’t make sense to me.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 5, 2008 10:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

dont forget about hurley, or mccarthy!

and why feliz SLASH hunter, more like feliz, holland, harrison/hunter

I give up

Aren't you the same guy

who put up the “let’s trade for A-Rod” comment last week that was eventually removed? Well, this is not in the same ballpark of ridiculousness, but giving 3 years $27 million for an old B-list type pitcher shouldn’t be done.

Aikman and Bradshaw?

Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.
