College Football Week 2 - Revenge of the Corso - Open Thread
Not a lot of huge games on tap today. Biggest ones seem to be:
Oregon St @ (19) Penn St - Paterno had to suspend a few more players, can Oregon St bounce back from their loss to Stanford last week?
Ole Miss @ (20) Wake - Jevon Snead walks in to try to take out Wake who is looking like a favorite in the weak ACC.
Cincy @ (4) Oklahoma - Oklahoma should take care of business if they come to play, but Cincy will be up for this game.
(8) West Virginia @ East Carolina - Can they pull off the upset yet again, WVa is looking somewhat vulnerable.
Miami @ (5) Florida - Miami has been down for a few years, can they open up this year with a win at in-state rival Florida?
Stanford @ (15) Az State - Stanford beat Oregon St last week who many had picked to do good things this year preseason, can they jump out and beat Az State this week?
(15) BYU @ Washington - BYU should take this one, however recent years they've seemed to slip up in an obviously winnable non-conference game. Can they go up to Washington and take this one to further their season?
My picks: Penn St, Wake, Oklahoma, East Carolina, Florida, Az State, BYU.
As for me today, it's TCU's first home game (Despite against I-AA Stephen F. Austin) so kicking the season off right by going to the Rahr & Sons brewery around 1, then tailgate, then be in the game in time for the 6:00 kickoff.

TCU game shouldn't be all that close today...
hopefully should be a good chance to get the backups some game experience. Oh well, it’ll be my 2nd of the season to go to, and my 2nd of 6 straight to start the season (3 home, 3 road)

As it stands now...
I think MWC is probably above ACC and probably above Big East.
BYU, Utah, and TCU are all looking like legitimate teams this year from the MWC. Currently the MWC has as many ranked teams as the ACC and Big East. I’m definitely pulling for New exico to beat A&M today as well.

A New Mexico win...
would be huge for the conference. A&M may be down but they are still a BCS conference team.
I’m still a little skeptical of TCU. I want to see what they do against Stanford and Oklahoma before I put them up there with the Utes and the Cougs. It may be a slim and none possibility, but imagine what a TCU win over Oklahoma would do for the conference. 3 top 20 teams in the MWC?!
My problem is the bottom of the MWC is so weak. You probably have 2 of the worst teams in college football in UNLV and San Diego St. I did think it was funny hearing Cowherd on the radio this week say he thought BYU or Utah could win the ACC though. Not sure if that is really a boost to the MWC or just a huge slap in the face to the ACC (I’d go with that), but nice to hear it none the less.

Yeah, the bottom is definitely weak...
but really every league has a couple weak ones at the bottom.
TCU I agree probably still needs to prove themselves against Stanford and/or Oklahoma. The offense didn’t look great last weekend, but I wonder how much that was just that they were already up 16-0 at half and reeled in the playbook. Overall, i think a TCU win at Norman this year catapults them up the rankings. A close loss could still gain them a decent amount of votes since OU is looking pretty deadly this year. Interesting to note, TCU is 4-1 all time in Norman, yet 0-5 all time in Fort Worth vs OU. Away team seems to dominate the series.
Would be nice to see SDSU turn it around and beat Notre Dame this week, but I don’t hold out much hope. I just dont’ understand how SDSU can be so awful sitting in a recruiting ground such as San Diego.
Overall, given the last few seasons, if Big East and ACC are BCS conferences, there’s not much reason MWC isn’t. The 3 are pretty similar overall, a couple teams that are cream of the crop, and a couple that are horrible.

LSC has really changed
Back when I was at ACU, the conference was quite different. Southwest Texas State was the class of the league with the late Jim Wacker as head coach. Sam Houston State was also in there. Then lots of the schools have changed names: East Texas State, West Texas State, and Texas A&I.
ACU and West Texas A&M will hook up later in the year for a game that will most likely decide the conference championship.

WTAMU has gotten really good the last few years since Don Carthel became coach. Before that, I remember they’d been awful for years and years. WT/ACU game seems to usually decide conference, although I noticed Tarleton is also ranked in the top 25 this year at the moment.

Wow. Nebraska exposed today.
San Jose State last week vs. UC-Davis: 4.71 yards per play.
San Jose State this week vs. Nebraska (in Lincoln, mind you): 5.27 yards per play.
Yikes. Nebraska wins 35-12, but that is in large part to awful special teams by SJSU (kickoff return for TD, two missed FGs) and some very untimely fumbles/interceptions.

Tulsa 56 UNT 26. :(
What the hell was Dodge doing going for FGs when we were down by 30!? We didn’t get blown out by 36 we got blown out by 30! Go us! The only positive thing about the game today was Riley Dodge. He showed a little something in the limited amount of P/T he got. Dodge is suppused to be an offensive guru but half the plays he called in the 1st half were WR screens. Huh? You do that every now and then use it to catch the D off guard and maybe you can break one, but not every down.
Smu gets a very nice win, TCU rolls and UNT gets blown out. Blah.
On the bright side, it can only go up from here.

Good to see TCU roll on today...
wasn’t really worried about losing, but TCU needed to put some numbers on the board rather than do the normal of get up by about 3 touchdowns then completely do nothing. Then again, TCU had 320 rushing yards today so SFA couldn’t even stop the run averaging 5.5 per attempt. TCU finished 1 point short of the school record of 68 points vs Austin College in 1932.

TCU
It’s great to see them do well today. They have a great recruiting classes coming in next year and a stadium renovation on the way. It’s a good underrated program. I believe Baylor should move in to the Mountain West since they can’t compete in the big 12 and they could form a great rivalry with TCU.

Take pleasure in hurting someone? Don’t worry pay back is a bitch. It’s easy being a little dog playing with nothing to lose. I really doubt if TCU will every really know with it is like to be ranked in the top 5 with a bullseye on your back every time you play.
