T-J surgery for Billy Wagner
Mets closer Billy Wagner is going to have Tommy John surgery, meaning he's probably out until 2010.
Big blow to the Mets, and you have to wonder if Wagner, who is 37, has thrown his last pitch in the majors.

FWIW...
…at least one story now says it’s not a ligament (thus not TJ), and he may be back in ’09.

if he doesnt throw another pitch….does he make it into the hall? i say yes, though it make take a number of ballots. but it has a lot to do with how in vogue hall closers are by then. he could be competing against rivera and the hoff, though those guys should get in first ballot.

No
relievers in general don’t have much of a shot to make it into the hall.

That suck for him, I've always liked him.
However, it may not be as bad as first thought, as Jamey said above. From Rotoworld:
Newsday said that Wagner would tendon surgery, but has since altered the report to say ligament instead. This is the worst-case scenario for Wagner, but perhaps not for the Mets. With Wagner set to miss most of the final season of his four-year deal, tbey could enter the chase for Francisco Rodriguez this winter. Given that Wagner is 37 and a reliever, he’ll probably attempt to rush back from surgery. The All-Star break could be a target. Sep. 8 – 2:22 pm et
