Pinto article featuring Teagarden and Sandoval
A brief look at two young catchers breaking in, mostly from a fantasy standpoint. A nice quick chart of offensive contributions by position is included. It averages the batting numbers from 2000-2008 at each position. Catcher is lowest (except pitchers, of course) at .722 OPS.

So, MY will be a below avg hitting 3rd baseman. Andrus should be nearly an avg SS for his first coupla seasons – hopefully his power comes around thereafter. Kins will rule at 2B. C should be above avg – whoever it turns out to be. Borbon should be avg in CF. Josh should do well as a RF’er. A platoon of some sort should get us some avg LF numbers. And Z’s point about putting Smoak and Davis at 1B and DH in order to actually see the DH position around here meet ML standards seems like a good idea.
Welp, all we need is some pitching.

Dangit!
I tried to post that chart in some semblance of formatting, but gave up on it…
That OPS/Positional breakdown needs to be pinned to the front page somewhere, it could really help settle some arguments around here.

If I can get a burst of energy today
[still sick – sniff sniff cough cough]

arguments
DH is the one that I thought might surprise most people. We think of them as bashers, but as someone said here recently, it’s often the place for banged up washed up can’t field guys who hit a little. (paraphrasing that)
I think Max Ramirez can hit above .800 OPS long term if not in April. He could be an average (at least) DH if he doesn’t stick at catcher.

The consensus
seems to be that Smoak, Davis & Young will be slotted into 1b, 3b and dh roles in some fashion over the next three years. If that’s the case, then you have to look exclusively at 1b and 3b and determine which player will be the best of the three at those two positions. All indications are that Smoak is a GG caliber 1b. So the final determination is: who will be better defensively at 3b, MY or CD? How they compare positionally to average offensive numbers makes no difference if all three are going to be slotted somewhere.

damn that MY...
i’d love to CD 3b, Smoak 1b, Max DH. That’s my dream, anyway.
