OT: Which NFL decade team was the greatest?
Ok, so in the Cowboys- Browns thread over here on LSB, I've been arguing with someone over who's the bigger chokers, the Cowboys or the Steelers? And also over what dynasty from what decade was the greatest. My explanation was that the Steelers were the bigger chokers because esince the early 90's, they've won one super bowl, while having numerous oppurtunities to play playoff games at home (especially AFC Championship games.) The Cowboys choked last year against the Giants. There is no getting around that, but at the same time, they have won 3 Super Bowls in that time span (despite them all being early in the timespan.) As for the other question, apparently that person thinks the 70's Steelers would be able to take down the 90's Cowboys, which I highly doubt.
So, I have 2 questions.
1. Out of these 4 teams- the 70's Steelers, 80's 49ers, 90's Cowboys, and the turn of the century Patriots- who was the best? And if your a fan of one of those teams, answer truthfully. Despite being a Cowboys fan, I would honestly have to say that the 80's 49ers would probably beat the 90's Cowobys.
2. Who are the bigger chokers: the Steelers or the Cowboys?
Since I want to hear everyone's opinions, there is no poll.

Here is my opinion,
I don’t like any of the teams so I will go with the 90’s Buffalo Bills. Why you might ask? I’ll tell you.
It’s really quite simple. If Buffalo would have won maybe one or two of the superbowl trips then the decision to include them Mr. Playa should have been easy. But they didn’t win. However, never has a team ever been to the ’bowl four consecutive times. I mean that is a feat by itself. Of course nobody has ever lost four straight either.
They may have never been back, but something tells me the team they are putting together will become super bowl champs.
That is all.

As a former Buffalo area resident
I applaud your fanboy homerism…but I can’t agree with you. Yes, those were great teams, and their resilience was a great story. But part of the reason they won 4 conference championships was that the NFC was much stronger than the AFC then, so they were dominating a weak conference. A lot like the AL is much more competitive than the NL right now.
That first one, the Giants-Bills game was the greatest super bowl game in my opinion.

Why I would put the Bills below the Cowboys is
that although the Bills did make it to the Super Bowl 4 times in a row, I don’t think they were playing teams as hard as the Cowboys was (like SF). But I agree you do have a good point in that they should be recognized.

this will be my last post so dont freak out AJM
i was saying that the steelers have a better overall franchise, if you add up the recent success and the historical success of all franchises, and yes it is the steelers. out of the 3 teams with 5 super bowls they have won the last won and have the most playoff wins by a mile since the last cowboy bowl. the steelers will dominate in week 15 against their opponent. THE STEELERS’ FRANCHISE IS BETTER THAN THE ANY OTHER TEAMS FRANCHISE.
predictions:
every year us Ranger fans should expect to be a contending team, no exceptions. in 2009 we will come close to the playoffs but fall short because of the bullpen. But in 2010 when Feliz and Dutch are up and Hurley is at his best the Rangers will make the playoffs and probably go to the WS with that 1-2-3 punch.
The Rangers will not sign CC or Sheets. probably no pitchers. They will trade Laird but get a mediocre pitcher back. Ron Washington will be the Manager of the year
in 2010 and Feliz will be the savior for all Ranger fans.
The Steelers will win the super bowl against the Packers this year because of Willie Parker being back to himself.
TT will be a defensive wizard for the next 5 years, Salty will be the Nelson Cruz of catchers, Harrison will be a great #3 to #4. Andrew Laughter will be the 7th inning man with frankie in the 8th and Joe Wieland in the 9th for the 2010 year after the Rangers make an extended effort to have a better bullpen. the beginnig 2010 rotation will be Feliz, Dutch, Padilla, Hurley, Harrison. the offense will be lead by Josh and Ian just as it is this year with andrus leading off.
and that is my ramble.
im assuming i was banned for replying to a lot that one guys posts, although he basically has been doin it to me for a month or so…? i know everyone on here hates me because i actually expect my team to win and i dont like the Rangers continously putting out no potential pitchers who suck now and will suck forever. If there was anyone on here who did like me then so long….and shroomer thank you for always providing the box scores for every ranger minor league game, that is a lot of work
lets all hope the Rangers win and continue to have a great farm system. next year i will be rooting them on and i hope you all enjoy the seasons in the future. this board is great but i obviously have to leave. mendoza sucks. so long…..

Statistically Compared to their Competition at the time
It’s without question the 60’s Packers. Without question.
For some reason we only care about Superbowls. Before Superbowls there were NFL championships that crwoned the best of the best fottball. Just because it wasn’t called something else makes no difference.
The Packers won 5 of 7 and for the second time ever won 3 in a row, which hasn’t been duplicated since and the previous team to do it was the 30s Packers.
They had dominating Offences and Defenses. Star players.
They were head and shoulders the best team of their era. While the other dynasties were great too, none of them were as dominant against their competition and that’s all we can compare.
by gr7070 on Sep 10, 2008 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually
statistically, we would have to take the late 40’s early 50’s Browns, who went to 10 straight Championship games and won 7 of them. I think that they would be more head and shoulders above everyone else than the Packers.

you just
can’t compare decades. different styles, diff. sizes of players, etc. hard to argue 90’s Boys though. noone had anyone to compare to the triplets. aikman maybe top 10 qb’s all time. emmitt top 3-4 RB. irvin top 10-15 WR.
SF had montana and rice, but no top tier back. ne was brady only. pitt had pretty good receivers, but swann and stallworth are really lucky to be in the hall. the boys line was probably better than all those too.
defensively it comes down to pitt and boys. pretty even i think, although pitt gave up more points in those SB’s than dallas did i think.
i don’t consider any team to be chokers right now. league is pretty balanced. NE would have to be biggest right now with what happened last year.
dallas was pretty big chokers in late 60’s(the team who couldn’t win the big one) and early 80’s. that team could very easily won 2 SB’s.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been in a decades-argument and my first question is always the same “Which rules will be used?” Can a CB jam the receivers using 70s style rules or does he risk a penalty? Guys who played “tough” in the 50s and 60s (And probably 70s) would be barred from the league in the 90s and 00s for their “dirty play”.
And Dallas didn’t choke against the Giants, if you call that a choke then what do you call what Garcia, Farve and Brady did…epic fails?

The 60s Packers had Bart Starr, he was basically Troy Aikman before Tory Aikman. While they didn’t have a HOF WR they had an excellent one and another who is legendary. They did have two hall of fame RBs, Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor. So that is 3 HOFers to match the great trio Dallas had.
They also had as good if not better O-line, which is saying alot cause the boys line was amazing. They had two HOFers and had another who was a perrenial shoudl be HOFer but isn’t.
They also had a better D than both Pitt and Dallas. They had two HOF linemen, one HOF LB and two HOF DBs. That’s FIVE HOFers on the D!

no arguement
that GB was awesome, but there also was like 16 teams in the NFL before the merger. to have the team Dallas did in the watered down NFL is pretty good. that of course was the last years before FA more or less though. GB was awesome, but it was a little easier getting talent back then. they also had a great coaching staff. not just lombardi.

then the 90s Cowboys, followed by the 80s 49ers, since the year 1960 the Cowboys have been the best overall team i believe.

more on the Cowboys
They hold NFL records for the most consecutive winning seasons (20, from 1966 to 1985) and most seasons with at least 10 wins (25). The team has earned the most postseason appearances (29, which includes another league record of 56 postseason games, winning 32 of them), the most appearances in the NFC Championship Game (14), and the most Super Bowl appearances (8), two more than any other NFL team. they really are the “New York Yankees of Pro Football”

>>>they really are the "New York Yankees of Pro Football"<<<
That’s laughable. The cowboys weren’t even around for half the NFL’s history. The NFL has been around since roughly 1920 and in that time it’s without question who the greatest is, the Packers.
The packers have won 12 Championships! Twice they have won three in a row. They have the second most HOFers. They have a history predating the NFL. The Cowboys have less than half the championships the Packers have! Sorry, but the Packers are the Yankees of the NFL.
The Cowboys have been a great franchise no question, and are the greatest of the last half of the NFL, but to ignore the existance of the NFL pre-1960 is absurd and revisionist.

well i may disagree
whose the team that if your ANYWHERE in the united states (or abroad) that if you spend a week in the city you are guaranteed to see a cowboys star on a jersey/tshirt/shorts/hat?
COWBOYS.
who is the team that “everyone” follows when they are doing good and drops when they are losing?
COWBOYS.
who has an owner who is very active (too active?) in team activities?
COWBOYS.
who is building a new, state of the art stadium?
COWBOYS.
who is the team which fans of every other team in the NFL love to hate?
COWBOYS.
which team (according to Forbes) is worth more?
COWBOYS – $1.5 Bn
PACKERS – $927 Million
(for what its worth 9 of the packeres twelve championships were in the pre-Super Bowl era)
the cowboys are much more like the yankees than the packers…
however the packers are much more like the pre-ESPN redsox lol (hard core fan base, LOYAL fans)

>>>whose the team that if your ANYWHERE in the united states (or abroad) that if you spend a week in the city you are guaranteed to see a cowboys star on a jersey/tshirt/shorts/hat?<<<
A week for the Cowboys, spend 1 day for the Packers.
I’ve been to 7 Packer games in Dallas. It’s embarrassing for their fans. In the Packer game there last November the Packer fans were as loud as the Cowboy fans.
>>>for what its worth 9 of the packeres twelve championships were in the pre-Super Bowl era<<<
Which is meaningless. They all count the same. The AFL didn’t exist for a long time, so their early Championships were the only pro football around and therefore just as meaningful. Their many, many 60s championships were during the time the AFL was considered vastly inferior. At the end of the Packers’ greatness, when they weren’t as good they still destroyed the AFL teams in the Superbowls.

Cut it out with this green bay oldschool packers crap
Larry Allen would probably block that entire line by himself.
The Cowboys would drop such domination on any of those old packers teams that it really would be like a highschool team facing a pro team.
Id say the score would be somewhere around 135 to 0.
Don’t kid yourself.

are you kidding me?
ONE DAY?
i have been in DC for 2 months and have yet to see 1 packers jersey or hat or tshirt – granted sample size, but still…
also in my travels outside the US (italy, england, france, spain and egypt) i have NEVER one time seen a packers hat/shirt/jersey.
i saw cowboys shirts on workers in cairo and hats on spainards in madrid…
also, do the packers even have cheerleaders?
when i was in college last year we hosted about 20 students from the middle east and when asked what they wanted to do in dallas (were about an hour north of dallas) they wanted to see if we could set up a meeting with the dallas cowboys cheerleaders (all were less than 25/26 y/o)
and yes, the fact that 9 of 12 were pre-merger count.
and yes, if they played each other it would be no contest…are you kidding me?

This wasn't
This wasn’t about who would win if they played eachother.
No question the recent teams are better than older teams, bigger, stronger, faster, more sphisticated, etc.
In my epxerience I see more Packer’s gear around the country than Cowboys. Both are very popular of course. I presume you are a Cowboy fan and not a Packer fan so a PAcker shirt or hat might not even register with you. I run into Packer fans all the imte, but I also have ties to teh Packers that you probably don’t so it wouldn’t come up for you.
I didn’t consider the cheerleaders. They definitely help the Cowboys case, but they’re still a minor factor in the actual dynasty or franchise consideration. FWIW, the Packers do have cheerleaders at the games. In the past it has varied whether they do or not and when they do some times they were not just Packer cheerleaders.

is living in a fantasy world, yes the DALLAS COWBOYS are the Yankees of Pro Football and it not even close or debatable. it is simply a fact, as someone else here said, anywhere you go in this country or outside the U.S it is the Cowboys they know, most outside the U.S. know nothing of the packers, the Steelers, Raiders and 49ers are more well known then the Packers, you are right that the Bears and Packers are old teams, but since modern football pretty much started in 1960 that has to be the logical starting point. since you cannot compare a team like the boys who did not exist pre 1960

2.5 times the Championships! That should be enough said.
Nearly a century of history, unique history at that.
The only team that rivals the Packers for fans is the Cowboys, those other teams aren’t even close.
Modern football, with appropriate pads and forward passes and the like started long, long before the 60s. As much as you’d like to beleive otherwise it is true. Even since 1960 the packers still have 6 championships.
Cowboys are a great franchise, but they are second to the Packers.

Bob Sturm of The Ticket actually did a lot of research into the greatest NFL franchise in the Super Bowl era and he came up with the Cowboys #1 and the Steelers #2. Now, remember, Bob is not a Cowboys-homer. He is a huge Packers fan.
