More Michael Young quotes
Jeff Wilson has some quotes from Michael Young, and they aren't as inflammatory as the ones that he gave Richard Durrett.
He's still adamant about not wanting to change positions, but it isn't as dramatic as the earlier quotes, and leads one to think maybe this thing can be salvaged.

These quotes are definitely more calm than Durett's
My guess is that Young ends up throwing a hissy fit about this and then ends up moving to third base and living with it.

And will seek out such trade.
But that if they can’t find a suitable offer, very possible, MY will give in and play 3b.

I agree
I can definitely see a scenario where JD decides he needs to trade MY in order for this franchise to get where it needs to go, but he knows the public backlash will be enormous.
So he does this. And I’m on board. Trade him. This franchise will be much better off for it.

Michael Young won't give in on this.
He’s got his money and his NTC plus he wants out of this joke of a franchise.
I think he gets traded, the Rangers have to pay quite a bit of the contract and the return will make the Chris Young / AG trade look good.

Per Jamey
What worries me is that other teams may get enough of an impression that Texas is in a corner now that they’ll offer less than fair value for him, possibly putting the Rangers in a position of choosing between an unattractive trade and an unhappy leader.
Solution: Get multiple teams involved, taking away the leverage that one team clearly more interested than everyone else thinks it has.
Kind of hard to do though, when JD has a small list to work with.

What worries me is that other teams may get enough of an impression that Texas is in a corner now that they’ll offer less than fair value for him
What’s less than absolutely nothing? In fact “fair value” is worse than nothing — it’s an albatross contract of an old player with rapidly diminishing skills. At this point MY’s most marketable feature is that he’s perceived as a very good player by casual fans (and hopefully a few of the stupider GMs), that he’s very media friendly, and that he brings juicy intangible leadership goodness with him.
Honestly, “fair value” would be another horrible disaster of a long-term contract back. Call Toronto and look into Vernon Well’s availability. He’s got a back-loaded contract that’s due something like eleventy bajillion dollars in 2011.
I really, really, really hope MY is traded for anything at all.

Did MY call ARod about switching positions?
“The ball is in their court right now.” When was it not. MY doesn’t have much of a choice in this situation.
I don’t think this set of responses is all that different in essence, just in tone. The one bit of wiggle room I can see for MY is this: “I didn’t think that was a stance that was going to be taken. I didn’t think it was something that was going to be such a hard line.” Which might be taken to mean he has thought that he may need to play 3B sometime down the line. If that’s the case, maybe JD will compromise and let Metcalf/Davis cover 3B this year.
Go Rangers!

I’ve lost most of my respect for Young, I used to work at a grocery store and I was a cashier. I loved being a cashier and I loved the store, worked there a year, everything was going great. Then one day the boss comes up to me and says “i’m sorry but a computer is taking over your job, people can now check out by themselves. You’re going to be stocking now”
I was hurt, you know? I was being moved to a position I knew nothing about, plus it was kind of a slap in the face they basically said “eff you, a computer and a un-trained checker can do your job” but I couldn’t quit cause well I have promise to Netflix and I have to pay them monthly in order to get my Kate Hudson movies. So after slamming a few shopping carts into old people in wheelchairs and a few nights in jail, with a chick that may have had a bigger penis than me. I finally gave in and well now I’m the best stocker in the world.
The point of this story is, Young needs to do his dang job if he wants to keep getting movies sent to him by mail.

Ok on the drive in to work this morning, the Musers talked about this
and I wanted to scream at Junior. He really is 100% clueless about this team.
His whole thing was “why move MY off SS when he made 11 errors, and Elvis made 30-something in a shorter season?”
It was incredible. A caller made the point that Elvis has twice the range of MY, so therefore he would make more errors, and Junior just laughed at that assertion.
Also, they said they had read both the MY and Nolan/JD quotes, but they basically believed MY that he was told he was moving, not asked. I don’t know what to believe there, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that guys that don’t really follow the team like Junior would automatically defend him like that.

what happened to michael young being a “team player” and “leader” – if your either of those you do whats best for you (you have the money already) and whats best for the team (which is clearly to move to 3b, so as stated you can have all your championship players on the field)
i hope he ends up getting traded to someone like KC or pittsburg (pipe dream) – or i hope that we do what frank robinson did with soriano which is say fine, “dont move we will put you on the restricted list and you will not get paid nor will you get a year closer to the end of the contract”
i think nolan ends up saying this above, in part because ron washington doesnt have the balls, and in part because ron washington is a horrible manager. i predict btw that washington is gone by the ASB

I can’t stand that guy and never could. He is such a baby/whiner. The guy is under contract to a club for 15 million this season. They tell him to move, you move, that’s it. When you work for someone, you work for someone. He has consistently whined and complained during his time in Texas and his “winning attitude” has done little for the team. I don't think Elvis Andrus is
ready for The Show even in the best of circumstances. He’s coming up a year early, maybe two years early. He’s going to struggle mightily, if not drown. The team, with Andrus at SS and Metcalf at 3B….95 losses?
Why is there a big hurry to start his clock right now? Does it really make sense to have all those players at one time hitting free agency together?

Hindman's take
http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/01/the-good-face-of-the-franchise.html
Young has, in most ways, been an exemplary player and person for several years around here, as I’m pretty sure young stars like Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton would attest. Last season, he sucked it up and played through a broken finger. Kudos for that. Does anybody realize how much
shat that Young has had to endure since 2003 with this joke of a franchise?
The owner decides to move one of the greatest players of his generation under the guise of giving the team financial flexibility (that is never used) and trades for an All-Star 2B.
Management had both tits in a vise with no evident solutions when Young went to them, volunteered and said he would move to SS. With the me-first attitude gone a new culture is instilled and the Rangers have a phenomenal 2004. Sometime during that year Young signs a long-term deal that tethers him to the club thru 2008.
At a time when this organization’s rep was absolute dog-shit (that no other player wanted to step in), Young was one of the few beacons of hope the fans could attach themselves to. The kid always, always played hard and turned into one of the better clutch hitters in the league. He outperformed his contract and nary said a word and turned into widely regarded person & player not only on his own team but throughout the entire league.
Come Spring Training 2007 and the Rangers have both tits in another vise. They’re about to lose a Hall of Fame player in his prime (Tex) and the Rangers need some pr cover because they don’t think they can lose the highly popular Michael Young. To retain him and keep him chained to this joke of a franchise is going to cost a lot of money and the Ranges are going to need to overpay.
The Rangers comply and give him a 5 year / $ 80 million extension and do so willingly and proudly. There were two full seasons before Young would hit free agency but the Rangers loved everything this kid brought to the table (including all the intangibles of leadership and being somebody the fans could love).
Throughout it all Young perseveres. His talent level is what it is and some decline is inevitable but Young continues to be the team leader and doesn’t worry about the blatant incompetency above him (hiring Ron Washington? Really?) and he continues to play hard.
In 2008, the team is not very good again because they don’t have pitching (the incompetent GM has dealt Danks, CYoung, Galarraga) and he has two broken fingers (while playing SS!) yet found a way to still play 155 games and oh-by-the-way, win a Gold Glove.
To rail on Michael Young at this point for not being a team player or be resentful of his contract is the typical unsophisticated take of a Ranger fan.
This organization doesn’t deserve a class act like Michael Young and I hope he eventually goes to a team that actually cares about winning.

a class act like MY would move to 3B
but he doesn’t appear to be a class act at this point. Like Hindman said, “That part of MY’s game is in decline as well.”
I really like MY as a ballplayer. I think he is a tough hitter, and fought through the injuries this year, but it doesn’t excuse you from moving positions. So what he moved to SS from 2B. That is easy to do when SS is considered the best position in the infield. MY’s pride is getting the better of him. It is hardly a class act move.
George Brett and Cal Ripken were class acts. Also, who leaked the story. I would assume MY, and his entourage leaked it to put pressure on the Rangers. I say make him play 3B. He is destined to be there no matter where he goes.

I remember him writing “stupid” or something like that about 50 times in a row and then leaving the building. I recall LMAO when that happened.
I seem to recall lots of little firefights between AJM & Hindman afterwards that still flare up occasionally but as for direct criticism of JD, not so much.
Apparently if you do indulge in public criticism of JD, you don’t get to enjoy all the off-the-record banter and little saucers of inside scoop he provides for all that admire him.

so you’re on board with the hire of Ron Washington and the extension he received?
A really good pair of moves by JD?
What about Young’s contract on this payroll? Forward thinking by JD?
What about Ben Broussard & JJennings? And DFAing Galarraga to put Jennings on the roster?
Did you really believe that a 40 year old Kenny Lofton was capable of playing CF for a team expected to contend for the division, meaning win 90+ games? How many 40 year old CFs have done that in the history of MLB?
What about giving Sammy Sosa 315 plate appearances v. RH pitchers (and batting him clean-up or 5th) in 2007 on a team that was expected to contend for the AL West?
What about trading a young promising lefty like Danks for a fragile tube of vagisil like McCarthy? Don’t leftys do better in Texas and why would they make that deal when they had Danks under control for more years?
Then there was the SDO trade…
Then there was the Soriano trade…
But you believe JD is thoroughly competent. Ok.

My "overheated rhetoric here"
is the truth, Snark.
Everything I mentioned above is factual so I’m not sure how that makes me the asshole. Are we not supposed mention those little details for balance when somebody goes on and on extolling the competency of JD?
What that means is that while we may very well have one of if not the best systems of minor league players in the game, the stupid sonofabitch (JD) running the thing doesn’t how the hell he to construct (via acquired major league ready talent) or manage (via his alloted budget) a team at the big league level.
The stupid sonofabitch JD gave out the extension acting as though the 2009 season was never going to come.
All of the sudden there is a schedule to play in 2009 and JD doesn’t have any money to spend because the stupid sonofabitch gave Young a monster deal that takes up nearly 25% of his alloted payroll.
Gee who could have ever seen this coming?
JD is amongst the most incompetent GMs in baseball and with all these magic beans at his disposal every other GM anxiously awaits another desperate phone call from our very own Boy Blunder.

Oh, please.
Young was under a standard contract with the Rangers while he was a very good player, just like many, many very good players are with many, many baseball teams every year. The Rangers gave Young a big, shiny contract extension. It was too big and too shiny, and some folks said so at the time, but you’re right ~ Texas gave Young that extension willingly and proudly. Now Young’s apparently threatening to refuse to abide by the terms of his contract. In other words, he may not be willing, but he sure is proud of himself. So why does it matter how bad the Rangers have been over the past five years? And if Young was so put upon from 2003 through 2007 ~ through the trade of Rodriguez, through the missteps of the past five years, through everything ~ why sign the extension?

From what I gather, they’re planning on giving Andrus a full year in AAA. It’s better to approach him with it now than to spring it on him in Jan. 2010, putting the franchise in a terrible position if he says no.

Here's the thing, Josey.
I agree that Young’s contract extension was a mistake. But plenty of folks have pointed that out before you, and plenty of folks will continue to point that out in the future. That’s not really the point here, though, is it? Nothing can chance the fact that the Rangers offered Young the extension, and he took it. The Rangers can’t complain about that, and neither can Young.
I don’t know how much contract considerations came into play for the Rangers when they asked Young to move to third, and I don’t think you know, either. I would hope, though, that the primary thing ~ not the whole thing, necessarily, but the main thing ~ is that the Rangers are a better team if someone besides Young plays shortstop. And if Andrus isn’t ready in 2009, there are other options out there.
And (as I posted over at Newberg): shortstop is not Young’s job, barring a stipulation to that effect in his contract. Baseball player is his job. He should be expected to work hard and earn his time at whatever position he plays. That’s not an extra or intangible that he brings to the table. It’s a basic part of any job description: work hard and earn your salary. And Young’s job isn’t being “torn away” ~ he’s being asked to move to a different position forty feet to his right, not to become a market analyst or a police officer. He’s certainly not being forced into unemployment.
Which, I could add, a lot of folks have, recently. Were they not “productive”? Did they not work hard and make sacrifices? Were they not loyal and respectful and accountable to their colleagues? And yet their jobs were, in fact, torn away from them, and most of them weren’t in line to make $80 million over the next five years. A little perspective from the “Face of the Franchise” would be nice here.

Snark, this isn't about
wanting to move Young to 3B. It is all about wanting to get from underneath this contract. You’re taking the bait from these idiots.
C’mon…all we’ve heard all off-season is how the Rangers have no money to spend. Gee, why give somebody on this team who is in decline $ 16 million per when your payroll is below the KC Royals? The only way they’re going to have money to spend is if they can move MYoung.
The only way to get the pr cover needed to deal a player this popular is to demand that he move to 3B for a 20 year old kid who is not ready for the bigs.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Let's say, for the sake of argument,
that you’re right, and this is all about money, and not at all about the Rangers’ future competitiveness. (I don’t think you are right about that, but let’s set that aside for a moment.)
How does that change what’s wrong with Young’s reaction? He, like the Rangers, agreed to the terms of a contract extension. He’s obligated to do his job under the terms of his contract. If the Rangers determine that Young should move to third for a 20-year old kid to play short, then that’s their determination. Young has every right to be unhappy, but he has no right to refuse to move to third, unless there’s a stipulation to that effect in his contract.

in 2010, what is the problem in rolling with Young for one more year at SS, having TMetcalf at 3B for a year (so you have an inexpensive in-house replacement if Young is traded) and giving Andrus at least one more year of seasoning?
At the very least, you keep his clock from starting at least one more year.

I don't know
I agree that the timing is a little curious. I’m not 100% happy with the decision, but I’m willing to see how it plays out before I blast everyone involved.

I'm not totally opposed
to Young eventually going to 3B but for a kid barely 20 years old with an OPS below .720 at AA?
Really?
I’m guessing if they do this, there is much better chance Andrus falls and falls hard, possibly sabotaging what could become a pretty good major league career.
I’d wait at least one year before doing this.

I think
they planned on bringing Elvis up at some point this year. However, they knew that MY would REALLY not want to move in the middle of the season. They probably thought this was the only time that they might be able to convince him to agree to the move.
Let’s just see how it plays out.

Here's the thing
You’ve said that the Young contract was a mistake. So why are you now up in arms about Daniels/Hicks/Nolan trying to get out of that contract?

The Young contract is a little complicated and
not entirely a mistake.
From 2004-2013, Young will have been paid $ 90 million which is a pretty good deal. The problem is that he is now being paid for what he has accomplished in the past and not for present production. Young also gets paid for leadership and what he means and has meant to the team in the eyes of the fans.
On the other hand, this contract is a mistake if you’re going to throw down a $ 68 million payroll. To give Young this contract showed no foresight whatsoever by JD. Come the off-season, we don’t have any money to spend. Who could have seen this coming?
Baseball 101- It is very tough to have one player sucking up nearly 25% of your payroll and then build a competitive team around him.
I think the end game now is to get out from under the contract and to get pr cover from the fans, they have to throw a class act like Michael Young under the bus.

Really Snark....
..did you HAVE to ask the question? I know you know the answer, as does anyone that has read more than a handful of Josey’s post.
MY threw a temper tantrum so that he might get his way, Josey.
I really can’t understand defending someone after they threw a media tantrum about being asked to do something he’s getting paid rather handsomely to do. If they ask him to keep a scorecard, he should do it.
The issue has nothing to do with “poor management”, “Washington? Really?” or any of your other drivel. It has to do with an employee refusing to perform a task that was not unreasonable in nature.

actually it is all about
getting unsophisticated fans to bitch about Michael Young so the team will have the necessary pr cover to deal him.

Unsophisticated fans?
Can you make a logical argument instead of talking out of your ass and namecalling? Just once? Please?

that just sounds as though
you’ve put the foil hat on, again.
Seems as though we heard this….when?……oh yeah, when Tex “got” to leave.

gallarraga was not a bad trade
if you thought he was goign to be this good then either a) you are very lucky or b) you are very dumb
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
