My man-crush on DeWitt aka Proposed Michael Young trade

I have a fondness for a certain type of player that I would like to see the Rangers pursue.  For the past few years, I've been wanting the Rangers to acquire a lefty power bat with reverse splits.  Why?  To offset the weakness of the Rangers lineup to hit left handed pitchers and to take advantage of the jet stream and short home run porch in right field. If this player could play third base, then he would be perfect for the Rangers and solve many of the myriad team problems

For years my obsession was for Casey Blake when he was with the Indians and then the Dodgers.  Once Casey re-signed with the Dodgers, that dream died.  It did get replaced by a new dream and his name is Blake DeWitt.

Blake DeWitt is 23 and was the starting third baseman for the Dodgers until they traded for Casey Blake.  This trade was due in part to his struggles at the plate during June and July.  He moved to second base at the end of August and began hitting again.

With young players there is always the possibility of a regression, but I'm hoping that Rudy will be able to keep the kid hitting if the Rangers get him.  Now about those splits, DeWitt has a 286/402/452 versus lefties and a 257/326/363 versus righties.  An 852 OPS versus lefties will absolutely help balance out the Rangers lineup. His defense at third base is only ok but it's better than the guy he got replaced by in Casey Blake

In order to get him in a Michael Young trade, the Rangers would have to take back salary.  The Dodgers have two atrocious outfield contracts they would like to move in Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones.  Jones recently deferred money (interest free) on his contract to facilitate a trade and would be the one the Rangers want back since his contract is up at the end of the year (though you would still keep paying him).

My first thought is a straight up MY+Byrd for Jones+DeWitt where DeWitt moves to third base and Young moves to second.  I am assuming Young will agree to be traded to a contender near where he grew up in Santa Clara.  The Rangers would then have money to add to add to the Sheets kitty.

Unfortunately I could see the Dodgers playing hard ball and wanting a MLB ready pitcher as well.  I would be loathe to throw in McCarthy, Harrison, or Hurley since the Rangers are needing them. The other alternative is send Millwood or Padilla, but the Dodgers would likely require the Rangers to eat some of the salary, which takes money out of the Sheets kitty.  Would the Dodges accept Kason Gabbard as the throw in?  He's a lefty nibbler that could find success in the NL where he couldn't find it for Boston or Texas.

Any chance this happens?  Will Young sulk in the dugout all year? Or will another team trade for him?

if you moved both Millwood and Young

you could eat some salary and still afford sheets

I guess it depends on how much salary

and if you were ok with Arias, Duran, of Andrus at short and didn’t sign a stop gap SS.

that stopgap wouldn't cost that much

Millwood’s salary = what you have to pay in compensation + stopgap salary

BTW, I’ll mention it here – I don’t think Arias can play short. He still can’t make the throws, right?

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to try him again at short but that would be in the minors to get his throwing strength back. I could be wrong though.

right

so, I don’t’ think you can count on him to be the starter right away

Again it depens on how much money the Rangers have to eat

but yeah you’re right. Eating some of Millwood or Padilla’s salary isn’t necessarily a deal breaker like I thought at first.

...

Millwodd and Padilla both have a track record of pitching well in their contract years. I’d rather keep them until the trade deadline and trade them then.

Or we might get lucky and make a run at the playoffs this year. or maybe not.

As AJM said yesterday

This trade plus O. Cabrera plus Sheets makes a playoff run likely. I don’t fear anyone in the division and that includes the Angels.

what if you moved one of those guys

say harrison/hurley and got back jon meloan?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Rather have Pierre

Then Wash could go balls to the wall and steal all the time.

Jones has nothing left and would eat this town dry of Mexican food. the Dh spot is already log jammed.

Pierre is a free agent after 2011

where as Jones is a free agent after 2009. I just as soon bite the bullet and clear the roster after ’09along with all the other spares.

by DerekSTheRed on Jan 12, 2009 12:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But

Pierre would at least do something for you. Jones is a total waste of a roster spot.

Unless you think Rudy and Richard Simmons can work together to get his fat ass to do something. I’d be interested then.

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 12:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

other way around

pierre is a bad hitter, bad arm, bad defense
jones is still an ok defensive player from what i understand and could possibly hit somewhere other than 9th

pierre is simply horrible, with no upside to be seen
jones is horrible, but with some possible upside if everything goes right

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I agree with KOK

but it’s really a moot point. DeWitt’s the prize here and the overpriced 4th OF we get in return won’t matter too much in the overall scheme of things.

really

Jones batted .157 thats right .157

Pierre .282

Pretty big difference.

Is Jones’s upside .200 10hr and 45 rbi.

Bring back that loser Sammy if we’re traveling down this road!

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 12:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Either one would see about as much playing time as Cat. I’m not arguing that Jones is better than Pierre because he’s not. I’m just wanting the guy that will spend the least amount of time on the 25 man roster, which in this case is Jones. Either way, I would be more than happy to take either one if it meant getting DeWitt.

Dewitt

He isn’t good enough to warrant taking either of those guys.

Let’s eat some contract package and get somebody decent. Not a platoon player.

Cat

Damn it is amazing how many bad contracts we have on this roster.

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Your not going to get any deal better than this one.

And the Rangers will be lucky to get this one on the table. DeWitt will benefit from Rudy and the ballpark and turn into a serviceable third baseman if the Rangers acquired him. If you think you can come up with a better deal, then by all means, write your fanpost.

jones could still hit 20 hr and be an average defensive player

pierre, not so much

heh

by knockoutking on Jan 12, 2009 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No offense

but,

Jones was their worst defender last year. He has a balky knee and hits worse than Pierre. This isn’t the goldglove Jones from the Braves this is the 500 pound Andruw Jones that can’t catch up with low 90’s fast balls.

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 12:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

IIRC

i have read somewhere that they still thought he had defensive value

if you want pierre, who is a bad hitter in the NL and has been for multiple years, over andruw jones, who at least could possibly be a passable corner OF and is signed for more years than thats your choice

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

It's a nice fantasy, but that's all this is. A fantasy.

We’re not going to get anything meaningful for FFace.

He’s horrible.

I think Fantasy is too strong a word

Is it likely to happen? Most likely not, but I contend it’s a realistic trade, especially in comparison to the Red Sox trade rumors out there.

Bosox

Crazy thought,

But throw in a prospect w/ MY add salty, pick up some salary.

For Buch and Bard

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 1:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Red Sox have Lowrie, Lugo, and Pedroia already so the Rangers would probably have to take Lugo back. However, Lowrie had about as good a year as Young and he’s younger and cheaper. This means the Red Sox have no incentive to do it and the Rangers would be at a disadvantage. I personally don’t think any Young to the Red Sox trade will be as good as this one.

Understand but

They have interest in him.

Take Lugo back to play SS for us.

Boston has this thing for veteran players. See how they keep pushing Buch back.

They have interest in him?

I can’t imagine that’s even the slightest bit true.

Okay. I don't think it's realistic at all, but reasonable minds can disagree.

And oh sweet lord do I hope you’re right.

To get something useful for FFace would be a dream come true.

But I just don’t think it’s possible. He’s a horrible person with a horrible contract who’s a horrible fielder and who’s never been anything but horrible with bat playing in any stadium other than the BPiA.

He has negative trade value.

Ridiculously so, actually.

negative trade value

Jones and Pierre have negative trade value as well, which is why I think it’s a realistic trade scenario.

Not a bad proposal

It is awfully convenient that the Dodgers (a team MY would almost certainly accept going to) are being forced to trade their albatross at the same time that this is happening to us. Considering that they have a surplus at the one position that we need filling if we make the deal, it is almost too convenient.

by JBImaknee on Jan 12, 2009 1:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Also

good job on the trade proposal diary. Generally “I want to see this trade” fanposts are horrendous, but this one is well written, well thought out, and actually interesting. Probably won’t happen of course, but it is reasonable.

Melky and Nady

For

Young
Gabbard

Crazy?

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 1:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

depends what you think is the “real” melky – 2 yrs ago or last year

nady is nothing more than a corner OF/1b guy

now melky/other prospect, someone like a minor league RP for young/gabbard is a hmm if you really like melky

Yes, crazy as shit.

Melky sucks and Nady is a one year rental only… but FFace has so much negative trade value.

Plus, what on Earth are the Yanks supposed to do with FFace in said scenario?

It was on some Yankee post. But the Yankees did discuss moving Cano to LA this offseason.

by Spadedsnake on Jan 12, 2009 10:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Which LA?

If it was the Dodgers, then I’m sure they were thinking of moving DeWitt back to 3b while putting Cano at 2b, but they instead signed Casey Blake so that’s not happening. The Angels have Kendrick at 2b and Morales at 1b. Why would they want Cano?

Ask you this?

Do you think Torre would rather have DeWitt or Cano?

by Spadedsnake on Jan 13, 2009 12:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's not the question

You don’t pay Casey Blake huge money and commit to DeWitt as the 2b and then replace DeWitt. If Torre really wanted Cano, the Dodgers would have traded for him earlier. Basically you’re saying, Young to the Yanks, Cano to the Dodgers and DeWitt to where? The Rangers in a three way trade? Works for me if you can get all sides to agree.

Well

This wasn’t my idea once again. it was posted somewhere else.

But i will say this I could see how this would happen, notthat i think it will.

With that said I believe your proposal would take the Dodgers about a nano second to say yes to which means we aren’t getting enough back. If we are having to take on Jones.

i’m all for getting rid of MY but not for taking back salary that is just as bad. I that case lets just keep MY.

I think..

I would do it if they picked up all of MY’s contract. I think the upgrade on defense would help our pitchers.
