Elvis Andrus Ready?
With Michael Young either moving to 3rd base or traded to start the season, who will be the shortstop on opening day? We all know that Elvis Andrus will take over SS when he is ready. However, is Elvis ready to start the season at SS? If not who do we go with at short and how long do we wait for Elvis to be called up? If 2010 is the year we are expecting to compete then surely Elvis plays at least half the season, so why not all of it.
What does everyone else think?
Start the season with Andrus.
Sign a low-price veteran for the year.
Low price vet and Elvis comes up at the All-Star break or sooner.

not quite ready
However, if MY is at SS for 2009, and Elvis is ready mid year 2009, you can’t ask MY to move mid year. The Rangers made a business decision and a good one at that. There will be some fallout, but in two years the organization will be better for it.

I would say it is fairly obvious
Andrus is not ready to be starting at the ML level.
I dunno what you do in the meantime, but I don’t think they would’ve gone to all this trouble if he wasn’t going to be up at some point in 2009.

So who's gonna sign as a free agent
Knowing they’re probably gonna be displaced come June? Vizquel?

Counsell? Eckstein? Juan Uribe?
A lot of dudes out there who’d love to have a job right now, Elvis footsteps or no Elvis footsteps.

I don‘t know you who you are. I don‘t know what you want. If you‘re looking for me to be a man and move to third base for the good of the team, I can tell you, I don't have man parts. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career of secretly being a pretty huge douche. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you trade me now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don‘t, I will look for you, I will find you. And I will throw a gigantic hissy fit in the media.

Unsigned Free Agent Camp
After the ’94 work stoppage, there were so many unsigned free agents that there was a camp for teams to come and see if anybody could/should merit a contract. Charlie Steiner said with about 100 unsigned free agents and about a month to go before ST that another such camp might be a good idea. What a weird offseason.

who is the best defensive SS
among current free agents?

Yeah I dunno
It just has to be someone who is good defensively or this whole thing would look even worse.

Trade for Tony Pena Jr.

I know you were just joking, but . . .
OK, so that makes five. Obviously, you already know the sixth. But to make the point … our guy is the ONLY player since Deadball to get 200 plate appearances and have a sub-5 OPS+.
He is, of course, Tony Pena, who actually hit .333 in his last four games (3 for 9) to improve his OPS+ to 4. For the season, Pena hit .169/.189/.209 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer in 235 plate appearances. It really was an epic year, and you have to wonder what the future holds.

Vizquel
Seems the ideal mentor for Andrus.
Not that it really matters, but aren’t they both from Venezuela?

I would like that move...
Sign Vizquel, don’t call up Andrus until Sept.
Is MY really going to try and say he is a better defensive SS than Omar Vizquel?

I think Andrus...
could use a full season at OKC, just my opinion.

Probably right
But he seems of the character that could handle a preemie promotion. Not to mention, I like the idea of him working with Rudy everyday.

ready or not
sounds to me like Andrus is going to start the year in the bigs unless he absolutely tanks in spring training.

sure hope so
making MY move only to have Elvis stink it up won’t go over so well.

Could this get any worse
for Andrus? I mean Im all for pushing prospects but he is probably going to be playing full time roughly 3-4 months before he is ready. Plus the leader of the team (in title, not action apparently) will surely be critiquing his every move.

he may not be ready for the MLs
but, he did show some good improvement during the season last year. Check out his monthly totals.
