Updates: Durrett with some new quotes from Young.

And Wilson with a few quotes from JD on MY.

The conference call audio.

And TR has a story up on Nolan's roll in this saga.

Rangers infielder Michael Young has agreed to move to third base for the 2009 season. Rangers infielder Michael Young has agreed to move to third base for the 2009 season.

Young has also rescinded his request for a trade. The move opens the door for rookie Elvis Andrus to play shortstop.

The Rangers asked Young to move to third base in December. He was initially opposed to the move and requested a trade. Now he said Wednesday afternoon that he is willing to make the switch.

Young has been the Rangers shortstop over the past five seasons. He has been an All-Star for all five seasons and won his first Gold Glove in 2008.

Sheeeit

You don’t think this gets spun?

Although Blunder Boy outdid himself with this screwup, Michael Young once again saved the Pepsident graduate by graciously offering to move to third. Of course, Michael knows how strong his arm is and how his play at third will shore up the defense. The only quesion is how far he shades towards second to keep the 20 year-old rook from embarassing himself.

I’m thinking it’s going to take until at least 2011 before we can start to believe Andrus is better.

That’s the biggest problem with all of this…Andrus isn’t ready and this may stunt his development.

Texas Rangers- You hang 'em, we bang 'em!

by coldskeet on Jan 15, 2009 5:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If that is so, when does Young learn to play 3B?

Let Vizquel play SS for a few months so that Andrus does not qualify for a super 2 arbitration guy and he gets some AAA AB’s and Young gets reps at 3B with a proven guy next to him to guarantee he is comfortable.

by laxtonto on Jan 15, 2009 5:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

The sooner Young was off SS and at 3B the better. If the Rangers think Andrus will be ready some time in ‘09 (and everything I’ve read says they do) then you make the move now. Not in the middle of the season.

Besides, you don’t want to start Andrus in Arlington in April. Keep him in the minors for at least a couple months so the Rangers will control him for an extra year.

If Arias can’t throw, and I don’t believe he can, then you need a guy who can play SS for a couple months ’til Elvis is ready. Vizquel is perfect for that role. The Padres went after Eckstein, so Vizquel is free.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on Jan 15, 2009 5:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I love the idea of signing Vizquel

This guy understands that hes getting old, but I’m sure that he would be open to coming here and starting for a couple of months, and if Andrus isn’t ready, Omar starting for the whole year. Besides, I would love for Andrus to learn SS from a multi-GG winner, instead of a one time winner

And yeah, we needed to move Young to 3rd now, to let him get use to the position. If we want to compete in 2010, we need him to get a feel for the bag and let Andrus take his time to learn SS in the majors

Is it Spring Training Yet?

by Smoak Some on Jan 15, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Multi-GG winner

Having more range, or greater defensive abilities across the board even, doesn’t make someone better able to mentor a young player. Vizquel may have a deeper understanding of how to play the position, but I’m not aware of any evidence to support that.

by Back Door Yakker on Jan 15, 2009 8:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta disagree with you here

Look at Omar’s 2007 and 2008 offensive stats. You don’t think Andrus can at least match that (for less money)? If we’re going to have a butcher at the plate, I want it to be our 20 year old butcher that’s getting some ML experience.

And there are others who were born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts.

Its a good disagreement

I can see your point. But it would be nice to bring both Omar and Andrus to spring training, telling both that either can win the job. If Andrus isn’t ready, then go into the season with Omar, and let Andrus come up around the All-Star break and let him learn from Omar. If Andrus wins the job, either let Omar start here to tutor Andrus while playing every so often, or give him his outright release if he wants.

Is it Spring Training Yet?

by Smoak Some on Jan 15, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I Want Andrus

I want to see what he can do. Im also sick of hearing about saving his time with the rangers..give me a break. If we really need to worry about that crap, then we should quit playing baseball.

You do what is best for the team. If Andrus is ready he should play without consideration for any kind of team control/years issues.

by Horns130 on Jan 16, 2009 4:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

If Elvis is truly ready to start on Opening day would you be opposed to starting him in AAA for 3 weeks if it meant he was here for 7 years instead of 6 years before hitting free agency? It has nothing to do with money its the amount of control you have over a player. Starting him in AAA for just a couple weeks will allow you to keep him a full extra year later on without having to worry about free agency.

No

Do you know what a contract extension is?

Not everyone enters FA. Furthermore, you just cant worry about that, put the team on the field and play baseball.

Also, where did this arbitrary idea come from that guys have to play in AAA. Plenty of players jump straight from AA to the bigs

by Horns130 on Jan 16, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I nkow full well what a contract extension is

How’d that work out for Mark Teixeira? How about Alfonso Soriano? When these big time players are approaching free agency they see dollar signs. If all it takes is a simple two or three week demotion to AAA as a 20 year old to assure you of keeping them through their age 27 season rather than their age 26 season I am all for it. Sure you can work out a contract extension. but from what we have seen recently is guys will sign extensions that cover their arbitration years and possibly one of their free agency years. But then they like to test the waters and let all teams bid for their services.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jan 16, 2009 12:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, this was a pretty crazy post.

If we have him under control for one more year, that delays having to give him a pricier extention. You don’t see the value in that? You actually think 3 weeks in a season where we aren’t likely to compete is more important than an extra year of control?

And you’re wrong, smart GMs can and do worry about that.

by philkid3 on Jan 16, 2009 3:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

this confounds me

why the hell would the Rangers go through this shit storm just to sign some marginal SS… IF you thought the fan outcry was bad when they did it to move Andrus up, wait til you sign Vizquel.

Beyond that, it makes absolutely no sense from a baseball or orginizational sense. The whole go here is to build from within, give young guys a shot and build a winning team. All you’ve heard about this move is that Andrus is a championship caliber player and we need to get him on the field, I’ve heard of two timing, but to not start Andrus on opening day would just completely ruin any kind of faith i had in the Front Office for deciding on a plan and then sticking to it.

This would seriously be one of the most ludicrous things i’ve seen a baseball team do if they go outside the orginization to get a SS after what they just did with MY

by blalock84 on Jan 15, 2009 6:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A couple of reasons

1. Getting Young over to 3rd base allows him to learn the position now and get use to it, while we get ready for our run in 2010. It could take him a while to learn the position

2. We are going to push Andrus to get use to SS, but if he comes in and not ready, it might be well to send him back down and get some more seasoning, but it would be a problem to move Young back, then have to move him again during or after the season. Omar could be someone that comes in and push Andrus (and possibly sign a 1 year deal) and tutor him the position. I rather Andrus learn from Omar than Young the ways of SS

MY needs to move to third for several reasons. One of them is not to be able to sign an Omar Vizquel, but with the room now at SS a move like that makes sense.

I think he needs a couple months but if he truly is ready I still say send him down for a couple weeks.

Young quotes

From the DMN blog: http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/01/young-agrees-to-move-to-third.html

“After some careful consideration over the last month and in an effort not to let this thing drag out and move forward on the task at hand, I decided to put an end to this and start bearing down and play third base,” Young said.
“My conversations with Nolan were especially productive,” Young said. "At the end of the day, there are certain factors that come into this. One is pride. Absolutely I’m proud. Pride isn’t something you can shut on and off. Nolan understood that. If you’re not proudly resistant to something like this, what does that say about your past, what does that say about your future?
“I don’t think this is the time for me to switch positions,” Young said. “I think I’m playing well. But it’s not my call. My responsibility is to 24 other guys. I’ve talked to many of them over the past few days and they support me. But I have to be fair.”

The part about fairness, especially, seems like an extreme turnaround from his complaints about being told and not asked to move to 3rd.

Byrd/Murphy

I think I’d rather see a Byrd/Murphy platoon than a Byrd/Blalock.

Blalock, if healthy, will be a strong offensive unit, and likely a more highly demanded July trade piece than Byrd. Offense-starved teams in a playoff situation (the Giants if things fall right? Arizona maybe?) could use some pop at a corner position.

Byrd, while a nice trade chip due to a positive clubhouse influence and good defense and reasonable offense, would not be as big a boost to a playoff contender, so hurting his value is not as damaging.

by Trickman on Jan 16, 2009 11:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Byrd

Blalock, when healthy, will be in the lineup everyday. There is not going to be any kind of platoon at DH. The only platoon we could possibly see is hank playing 1B and Davis getting a day of rest by playing DH.

Byrd is more than likely going to be an everyday player on this club also. His production the last two years has earned him that. Plus he will be a very valuable trade commodity come deadline time. A plus OF who can play all three OF positions and provide decent offensive performance at a very reasonable price and who will bring back potentially multiple draft picks as compensation in free agency.

I think the more likely platoon is Murphy/Cruz. When Hamilton needs a day in RF, Cruz will sit and Murphy will play LF while Byrd slides to CF.

Actually, it did work. Young was better defensively the last few years. You make a good point though, I think if he bulks up and can hit around 20 HRs, that will make his numbers at 3B more respectable.

I can choose to go out on a fishy-smelling date tonight. Here are the details:
  • I have had one drunk conversation with this woman.
  • The dame has pretty nice mammers.
  • The dame might be a stripper.
  • The dame is a mom.
  • She wants me to go and hang out with her and her friends at a club I’ve never been to.
  • I do not want to be an asshole and stand a date up.
  • I do not know if this woman even remembers me.

Do I get the ball rolling with a text message?
Or do I stand pat?

So which one of you...

is the Chris that started this petition?
Moreover, I know it was one of you that signed as “buttsecks.” I cracked up at the signatures. The least they could do is spell a few names right.

Hmn.

$10 says this originated on the DMN blog.

I don't have $10 to send you

…but indeed you’re right. I troll over there from time to time. And then immediately regret it.

The rational trolling the irrational.

I'm glad you're calling me rational

(at least I think you are).

Sometimes, when I go over there, I wonder if I’M the crazy one.

That blog is a first class beating

Well, the comments section, anyway.

The worst part is, with it eventually getting shut down when the DMN stops covering the Rangers, it’s a fair bet that a good number of those pea-brains will start posting here.

And yes, BTW

You are pretty rational about everything that doesn’t concern Chris Davis. ;)

I can't help it

But I’m working on it. It’s a resolution.

DMN Blog

I only go over there to read. When i do post I keep it simple.

I say you’re all idiots/retards and youll make the world a better place if you find a new team.

Stupid doesnt quite describe how dumb they are

Thanks, I would be proud to accept, but don't try to move me after I settle in because,

you can’t take it from me and I’ll go around the web and show you that. And I’m not going to apologize for it.

Thanks for the conference call audio

Very interesting to hear rather than just read the comments.
