OT: Cowboys crap

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9090424/Cowboys-fire-defensive-coordinator-Stewart

Just saw that the Cowboys fired Brian Stewart..yay!

And the moves keep on coming..Garrett's future in doubt, TO's future in doube, Bruce Read fired, Pac Man and Tank let go..

This article actually speculates that Ray Sherman could be the new OC if Garrett goes..

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/011709dnspocowlede.46afe49.html

I almost hope that happens just so I can laugh at the wreckage of this 4-12 (will be 4-12 if it's Sherman) team next year, AJM can blame the draft and JJ or whatever illogical stuff he does, and I can laugh at all the Garett haters ...and you oblivious goofs can talk about how the offensive line sucks and thats the reason..

Also mentions Campo for DC, I'd be fine with that..

Anyways what kind of crap board software doesnt automatically make links clickable? This one.

And btw, Slumdog Millionare is a great movie...

They really need to dump Garrett

everyone knows its all the OC, and if the Cowboys don’t make the playoffs, it really means their OC sucks.

9-7

Should probably look up what suck means.

But I thought it was all about the talent??

by Sharky on Jan 17, 2009 6:43 AM CST up reply actions

Speaking of talent

Heres a good idea of how meaningless “talent” is in the NFL. I have this football magazine I bought last year for the 08 season. It’s called Pro Football weekly preview 08. Like a Street and Smiths type thing, like I used to devour before the internet. Anyway, they had their “preseason power rankings” in the rag. So here are there top 12 teams going into 08 and how many made the playoffs (remember this list would have looked very rational after the 07 season):

1. New England-no playoffs
2. Dallas-no playoffs
3. San Diego-playoffs
4. Indy-playoffs
5. Seattle-no playoffs
6. NY Giants-playoffs
7. Jacksonville-no playoffs
8. Cleveland-no playoffs
9. Pittsburgh-playoffs
10. New Orleans-no playoffs
11. Arizona-playoffs
12, Green Bay-no playoffs

So we see 7 of the top 12 pics of a reputable mag failed to make the postseason, and 5 did.

Awful.

Thats what “talent” gets you kids. You might as well flip a coin, you’d have a better success rate.

Heres some other notable projected 2008 records from this rag (remember, virtually nobody would have disagreed with these going into 08):

Miami: 3-13
Baltimore: 5-11
Atlanta: 3-13

And those are just some of the extreme outlyers. If I listed all the teams they were “only” off say 4 games on, like Tennessee projected 8-8 actual 12-4, we’d be here all day.

Basically blind chance would do you exactly as well as this magazine in predicting the NFL for the most part.

by Sharky on Jan 17, 2009 6:56 AM CST reply actions

But

I bet all those 3-13-to-playoff teams DID have new coaching staffs and OC’s and DC’s..

I bet, I bet they did..

by Sharky on Jan 17, 2009 7:04 AM CST up reply actions

2nd Year

It seems to me that in a lot of cases, the new coaching staff does well it’s first year, but then falls a bit the 2nd year when everyone figures out what they’re doing. The best coaching staffs know how to adjust and continue with success. Most can’t and you see a many a team do well with a new coaching staff in their first year, and then do poorly their second year.

Garret was figured out this season, especially towards the end. If he can adjust the Cowboys will be successful and he’ll be a head coach. If he doesn’t adjust, he’ll be relegated to a QB coach for the rest of his coaching career. Next season will be a turning point for a lot of people at Valley Ranch.

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

by DerekSTheRed on Jan 17, 2009 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

Well...

32 teams , 12 make the playoffs. That’s 3:8. The magazine hit 5 of 12.

"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."

by benmor78 on Jan 17, 2009 7:05 AM CST up reply actions

Meh

It’s about 41% for the mag versus 37% for chance I guess. Not a big deal.

You could probably make an stronger argument that Dallas and NE “should” have made the playoffs, NE with the Brady injury..greatly increasing the mag’s percentage, still, I’d be skeptical altogether.

Sure, there appears to be some team momentum from season to season here..but surprisingly little.

by Sharky on Jan 17, 2009 7:10 AM CST up reply actions

Also

NE went 11-5 with a backup QB. Im pretty sure that Tom Brady was worth at least one win to get them to 12-4. Seattle was RAVAGED by injuries to their WR corps and Hasselbeck. And if I would have seen that I would have wondered how Cleveland was ranked above any of those teams in the top 12. But lets say the Pats were the only team that changed. So 6 out of 12

Campo

is a passable asst. just not a good HC. Honestly, my dream set up would be Phillips at DC, Martz at OC and Cowher as the HC. It will never happen but hey i can dream ha.

by Michael Cave on Jan 17, 2009 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

True

probably should have use good as opposed to passable. Having Campo at his role this year was a plus for the team. Having him at DC wouldnt be the worst thing in the world at all. Think the cowboys will stay with the 3-4? Seems like they have to because of the personnel.

by Michael Cave on Jan 17, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

They'd definitely stay 3-4

Only question is how much Campo has mastered the scheme, at least to the extent that he’d be needed to if Phillips is the true strategic DC. I’d rather consider the scenario of who to hire once Shanahan is HC, whether you could recruit a Capers or whether Campo could handle a 3-4 all by himself, etc.

if Martz was OC

then Romo would absolutely get killed back there. With Martz, all he ever does is leave the 5 linemen to block, and sends everyone else out on a pattern. With how bad the Cowboys o-line is at pass protection, Romo would get hit every play like he was in the Giants game, and with the amount of pass rushers in this division- Taylor, Osi, Tuck, Cole, etc.- that would not be a recipe for success.

I still think

the o-line is good but it really hurt when kosier was injured. Proctor was terrible. I know that isnt all of it but i think when the o-line is completely healthy it is very good.

Most likely

i just put together a video game type of coaching staff basically. I was really pleased with Phillips when he took over the D. I think he is a better indian than a chief. i do think that something needs to happen on offense. Either the system wasnt good or the players werent. You either have to change the system or overhaul the personnel.

by Michael Cave on Jan 17, 2009 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

I think with, like you said above, with a healthy offensive line

Then also Barber and Jones back, as long as Romo is the Tony I know, then we should be fine on offense. To me our biggest needs are at Saftey and backup QB. Flozell, one year older, does scare me a bit. I wonder if a move to LG is plausible..

You don't have to hire a head coach with the idea

Right

the team had defensive personnel, and that carried them the entire time of Billick’s tenure and this year. His background as an offensive guru sounded great, but it never worked really out, even when they won the SB.

There are roughly as many great offenses and defenses who have coaches who specialize on the other side of the ball as there are those who specialize on that side. Coaching certainly matters, but you have to have personnel to win, and being a good all around HC and spending the required amount of time to essentially be a coordinator is very difficult.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 18, 2009 5:32 AM CST up reply actions

Well

It just matters whos the playcaller.

So many great OC’s and DC’s become head coaches, then they turn over their specialty playcalling to an assistant who may or may not be worth a crap.

Unless you’re in the local market, it’s usually not easy to know whos calling plays for a certain team anyway. Like, does Whisenhunt or Todd Haley call em in AZ? I’m pretty sure it’s Whisenhunt because I saw him carrying around the playcard once, but bottom line is I dont really know. Similar with Kubiak and Shanahan in Houston.

Exactly what happened with Wade Phillips and Brian Stewart, Phillips is a proven DC, but it didnt mean anything because he let Stewart call the plays until halfway through this year, and our defense pretty much sucked.

by Sharky on Jan 18, 2009 6:23 AM CST up reply actions

Also I am glad to see Josh Daniels out of NE..

That could be a HUGE blow to them..could be the end of the NE dynasty as we know it.

by Sharky on Jan 18, 2009 5:05 AM CST reply actions

Eh

We’ve already had this exchange, but while it could certainly impact their offensive explosiveness, much of their “dynasty” took place under other OCs. Belichek has a great talent for hiring excellent coaches and helping them to maximize their ability while on his staff.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 18, 2009 5:28 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I said it would end after Weis too, but then Josh Daniels came along.

Theres no law that says when you replace a great OC, you might not just get another great OC, obviously.

My fear is Belichick know how important it is. I say fear cus I really dislike the Pats.

Still, just going from “great” to “good” OC would end the Pats dynasty, and how long can Belichick keep hitting “great” ones? Surely not forever. So I think the Daniels loss does mean the end of the Patriots.

Jerry Jones seems to have figured it out with the Cowboys. IF Ray Sherman had become the OC, I dont think he would have last 3-4 games before Jerry would have removed him. However, that probably would have shot the season anyway.

rigghhhhht

NE may well suck this year, then you can say he doesnt have personnnel again, since it’s meaningless.

by Sharky on Jan 18, 2009 7:03 AM CST up reply actions

It's impossible to argue with people...

If you say “who has great talent” before the year and that team ends up sucking, they’ll just say “well, their was offensive line injuries” or some stupid shit.

Of course theres always tons of key injuries on every NFL team every single year.

by Sharky on Jan 18, 2009 7:05 AM CST up reply actions

Also

If you’re going to give belichick all the credit in NE and say he’s a great coach, why doesnt he get the blame in Clev?

That makes no sense.

Now you’ll say “well, NE has a great GM”.

Right, like theres 3 GM’s anybody cares about in the NFL. Actually there’s zero.

by Sharky on Jan 18, 2009 7:07 AM CST up reply actions

And that NE GM..

He went to another team..

And they’re prolly gonna suck..

Sorry to pull a “crazy sharky” and make my 8th consecutive reply to myself but..

Did Atlanta have the “personnel component” this year? Coming off 3-13 or whatever?

How about Miami? 1-15, good personnel?

What I mean about GW mythers is how they say, when it’s hot it’s GW, when it’s cold it’s GW, when there’s more hurricanes it’s GW, when there’s less hurricanes it’s GW..when there’s more weather volatilit it’s GW, when theres less it’s GW..
