Pie traded for very little
Despite being rated as the top prospect in the Cubs' farm system in 2006 and 2007, outfielder Felix Pie never made his mark in Chicago. Now he'll get a chance to make a big-league impact in Baltimore, instead.
The Cubs traded Pie to the Orioles on Sunday for left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and minor league pitcher Henry Williamson.
Pie, 23, played in 130 major league games for the Cubs the past two seasons. In 2008 he hit .241 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 43 games. Baseball America rated Pie as the Cubs' No. 1 prospect in both 2006 and 2007.
Olson, 25, was 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA in 26 starts for Baltimore last season. In 33 career starts for the Orioles, Olson was 10-13 with a 6.87 ERA.
Talk about waiting a little too long to trade a guy.

damn
for that price we should of gave him a shot…what would our equivalent have been? something like elizardo ramirez and some scrub minor leaguer?

thats a shame about pie
never really got his shot, a la jason botts (bad ex but the situation was a lot alike)
baltimore has made some pretty not horrible moves recently
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

NL East
is getting tougher and tougher. Baltimore seems to be making some very good moves and has wieters, matusz, and tillman on the horizon. Even the smaller deals they are making look like they will pay off. The rays are AL champs, the Yankees just signed everyone and quietly the Red Sox are stock piling low risk, high reward vet arms.

sure they are...
they just lost Burnett and didn’t really gain anything did they? Marcum is apparently out for the season, McGowan’s out for the first month or two
I mean, I’d love to have Halladay, and David Purcey’s a good looking lefty…they have a pretty nice bullpen…but other than Vernon Wells and Alex Rios, who else on that team would you take over our position players?

I'm pissed!
I still like Pie and would’ve taken a chance on him.
by Coolbean04 on Jan 18, 2009 2:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Who do you drop to make room for him?
You have Byrd, Murphy, Hamilton and Cruz as your 4 outfielders.
Do you make Pie your 5th outfielder, knowing that he’ll hardly ever play (and knowing that you’ve got Boggs and Borbon in AAA waiting for their opportunity)?
Do you just make Pie your starting CF, with Hamilton and Cruz on the corners, and hope he shows something in the first couple of months of the season, while Byrd and Murphy sit on the bench?
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 18, 2009 2:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Byrd
I’d look to trade him. He might be a type A and had a solid year. I wonder what kind of player we can get for him? Or maybe what type of player with him and other(s) included?
Could Byrd and a prospect net a nice player to package with Salty to get Clay?

u trade boggs or murph
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
by Jayslick on Jan 18, 2009 5:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
its not like murph walks a ton and we're happy if he hits .280...
pie steals bases and can play an honest rangey CF and can possibly put up a similar BA. he doesnt have murphs power (what does that say?) but he is younger at just turning 23…
if im building for the future, ie not this season competing for a WS, i find pie more appealing…
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

Pie
He’s just turning 24, not 23.
He’s out of options.
You don’t have anywhere to play him here. I’m not a big Murphy guy, but Murphy is better than Pie.
Pie’s SB% in the minors has been less than 70%.
He’s a terrific athlete who hasn’t shown that he can play baseball — in particular, that he can hit.
He’s Calvin Murray, in essence.
And unless you are going to stick him in CF every day for most of a season, there’s no real point in getting him. And if that’s what you are going to do, there’s no real point in having Borbon and Golson on the 40 man roster.
I just don’t see the point. If you don’t have Borbon, who will likely be starting in CF by season’s end, that would be one thing. But as it is, you have a bunch of OFs hanging around, which makes it kind of silly to get a toolsy can’t hit OFer to bring in and take a flier on, particularly when you are saying you’d have to trade a guy who is cheap and appears to be a very good 4th outfielder in order to take a flier on the young guy that you hope might be a decent 4th outfielder.

Also...
…trading Boggs doesn’t do much for you, regarding the Pie situation, since Boggs is going to start the season in AAA most likely anyway (barring an injury).

which sucks.
I love Boggs. Maybe he could use a few months in AAA, get that hitting eye ready, maybe we find a trade partner for Byrd or Murph, but I’d love to have him as our 4th OFer

Pie
I would have taken a shot on him. I would certainly rather give him 400 plate appearances, with Hamilton in RF, than Cruz, who is 28 and has had a total of about one month of success in the major leagues. Cruz shouldn’t be blocking anyone.

Are you sure?
I wouldn’t call a .778 OPS for a 26-year old corner OF playing half his games in TBiA success.
Especially on the heels of the .551 OPS he put in the first half of 2007 when handed a starting job at the beginning of the season.

that was 2007
look at his progression and his 2008 numbers. sample size, sample size, sure – I hear you – but you simply HAVE to give him the chance to prove he can or cannot last in a corner OF slot for us. A chance of above average defense, huge power and speed on the basepaths, with improved major league discipline at the plate would be HUGE for us going forward.

exactly
bad trade for the Cubs, unless there’s more than meets the eye with regards to Olson. Great chance taken by the Orioles – and with Adam Jones, Pie and Markakis, things could break right giving them a very good outfield. Plus, they have Ryan Freel, which is just a huge benefit for that team…gotta love a hard-nosed player that talks to somebody that isn’t really there…

Matusz has yet to throw a professional inning, so that’s out of the question. Tillman has yet to throw an inning above AA and although it’s possible, I would think it’s highly unlikely, given his age, level, etc.
