OT - Antivirus Protection
Is there any good free antivirus protection software out there? If not, what is the best one to get that costs money?
I just reinstalled Windows XP because of a virus and I don't have any virus protection now. I rather not spend money on one but if that's not an option, what should I get?

AVAST or AVG
Both are free and you can’t go wrong with either. Myself I prefer AVAST as it offers rootkit detection whereas AVG only has it on their paid version.

In a nutshell
Something you never want to have, it lies beneath the kernel, hides from O/S, etc. If you ever get infected (And are fortunate enough to find out) your best option is to reformat/reinstall.

I agree. Avast is better than most anti-virus software and its free.
For the love of God don’t use Norton.
I also use COMODO as my firewall. It works really well and I’ve yet to have a problem with my combo of Avast/COMODO.
If you really want to pay money, I hear Kaspersky isn’t bad.

The paid version
of AVG is good. I’ve had it for the last four years or so, and never once any virus issue.

AVG Pro $34.99
Single user. There is a comprehensive suite for $59.99, but a home user doesn’t need it.

Thanks for bringing this up...
Did anyone else get a virus from the Texas Rangerws web site about a month ago? When I pulled it up it started downloading something and I knew it was not right before I could get my computer turned off I think it was to late. Now when I shut down or start up this picture of a snake mountain appears on my page for about 5 seconds. I have Mc Afee protection, but they want to charge me to get it off. Any ideas?
I am also pretty sure it was from the rangers web site, cause when I opened it from my laptop it started doing the same thing, and when my friend who has a mac tryed to open it it did some weird stuff to his . Just wondering.

Did you ever use that picture for your desktop?
If so then it’s Active Desktop. If not then I’d run a spyware scan, like RangerMad I use Spybot as well, it’s also free. Odds are spyware is what was downloaded from the mlb site.

I had never seen that pic before.
A few days after it did change my desktop pic to some warning page about my active desktop. I downloaded avira (not sure if it is a virus in itself) but it shows no virus. My mcafee shows it to be clean also, but I don’t think it shows spyware. I may try that spybot, will it get rid of spyware, or do I need to pay someone to get rid of that?
by Ranger Capt on Jan 19, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Spybot is free
Also Avira is an anti-virus app just like AVG and Avast.
Get rid of McAfee, like Norton it used to be good but they’ve become so bloated they’re almost viruses themselves. Go with either of AVG/Avast + Zone Alarm/Comodo for firewall + Spybot for spyware and you’ll notice the difference.
If you’re still need assistance, download and run an app called “Hijack this” and send the text results to me, dfwgt1234@yahoo.com (Note, there are no numbers in my e-mail account) and I’ll look for anything unusual.

yes,
when my desktop closes down right before it shuts off this photo straight out of the land of the lost pops up for about 5 seconds then the computer turns off, it does the same thing at start up. Weird huh?

It will happen
only reason it hasn’t is because Mac’s have such a small market share no one wants to bother with viruses for them.

That's not true
and I say that as a Mac user (Remember a few weeks ago when Apple posted a recommendation that you get anti-virus?)
All systems, no matter the OS, are vulnerable.

they soon removed that, it was mostly to cover their asses.
there are some trojans for mac but youve really got to be an idiot to get them. Like putting in your admin password when asked and all you’re trying to do is open a picture.
with time and desire someone will come up with something for just about anything

I use AVG (the free version) and spybot
And the AVG just killed a trojan for me a couple months ago.

The best A/V I have used...and I'm an IT Director...
hands down is NOD32 by ESET. ($59.99) I use it both personally and corporately.
Don’t go Norton (although their gaming edition is supposed to be good) or McAfee for sure.
Also, I have friends in the IT industry that use CA Anti-virus and swear by it. ($39.99)

I haven't had a virus in years...
so I don’t normally use an Anti-Virus.
But Spyware Doctor comes with an Anti-Virus, and SD is the best anti-spyware detector by far. The only problem is that it takes a ton of memory to run it, so I usually keep it inactive until I choose to scan. XSoftspy is a good spyware detector too. You may have spyware. Just download the demos of both. They’ll check your comp out for free.
Since I’ve switched to Vista, I haven’t had either Spyware or Viruses though. Been about a year now.
