Rangers sign Frankie, are close on Vizquel

Jeff Wilson says that the Rangers have agreed to a one year deal with Frankie Francisco for $1.615 million, avoiding arbitration.

Also per Wilson, the Rangers are close with Omar Vizquel and could have a minor league deal for him in place by tomorrow.

Im surprised its a minor league deal

I know times are bad and vizquel is offensively inept, but I would have thought someone would give him a ml contract.

Of course, i certainly prefer it.

the preceding post was a great success.

I like it

a minor league deal is a no brainer.

I figured the same thing...

even if it wasn’t for big cash, I figured someone would give him a guaranteed contract.

I think it’s a good play for sure if they can bring him in on a minor league deal. Bring him into camp and then assess where Elvis Andrus is and if he could benefit from half a season in Oklahoma. If so, add Vizquel to the roster, if not, go ahead and roll with Andrus.

Yep

Although that clause where he can ask for his release by May if for some reason we don’t add him to the 40 is probably going to be in place.

That's fine though I say...

if he doesn’t break camp with the Rangers, then he’s likely not going to play for the Rangers at all this year because the Rangers would have decided they will take their lumps with Andrus.

yeah me too

I would hold out if I was him; there is still another month till spring training. As for the off. inept part, his career #s are just fine for a SS but were down last year due to injury.

by Goyogringo on Jan 19, 2009 11:39 PM CST up reply actions

Well he wasn't too hot in 07 either

and Its hard to predict a 42 y/o (for most of the season) to make a big offensive comeback.

Obviously im fine with the signing though.

Awesome news

I’m sure he’ll break camp but that buys us some extra time with the 40.

Because Sheets

has been off talking to the Mets.

MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone transcribes some comments from SI.com’s Tom Verducci, and also provides his own insight into Ben Sheets’ possible demands. The Mets like him, but they want to do a heavily incentive-based deal similar to Brad Penny’s. Sheets, having had a much better season than Penny, is apparently seeking two years and $18MM or so with a third-year option.

Love this deal

Basically telling both Andrus and Vizquel that you are coming here to compete for a starting job (with Andrus being a little ahead right now, imo). It would be good for Andrus to learn from Visquel and get advice from him, and if he’s not ready just yet, we can send him to AAA and let Visquel start for us, and after the All Star break, bring back Andrus and split starts between the two. Just a great signing if it happens

how long does andrus have to spend in the minors so his free agent clock starts a year later?

go here to view my blog: dirtfromd.blogspot.com

by studcrackers on Jan 20, 2009 2:17 AM CST reply actions

To get the extra year you can come up just a couple weeks after the season

I think there is a minimum time before you can call up a player at the beginning of the season? I cant remember exactly. But regardless, Evan Longoria was up on April 12th last year and he got the year.

These players however get “super two” status, and are arbitration eligible after his 3rd season (which is technically 2.9 or whatever years, thus the exception) so that they get arbitration for 4 years.

You can avoid super two status and save money by waiting until late may, which will make it so he wasnt up long enough to meet super two status.

so uh yeah, they can come up almost immediately and have the FA year, late may for the FA year and cheaper.

the preceding post was a great success.
