Byrd, Rangers exchange arbitration figures
Marlon Byrd is the lone Ranger eligible for arbitration who hasn't agreed to a deal yet, and he and the team have exchanged figures.
Byrd is asking for $3.6 million, while the Rangers have offered $2.7 million.
I suspect they'll end up settling in the next couple of days for about $3.25 million.

Well, he won his arbitration case last year
Maybe he’s got a taste for it now.
I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.
He's going to get more than the $14 mil Philly offered.
A $4 million raise is low-balling him, honestly. I think his agent takes this to arbitration and wins again.
Byrd isn't asking for too much
I can’t see this doesn’t get done very soon.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Allow me to get hypothetical on that ass:
Marlon Byrd comes to you and says he’d be more than happy to sign a 2yr/7.5mil deal right now, buying out his last arb year and his first FA year.

No
With Borbon, Boggs, and Golson all on the 40 and all going to start in AAA we have plenty of OFs beyond this year. Im all for selling high on Byrd which is going to be sometime this year. I can’t see him sustaining his success for very much longer.

9?
10?
I think I’d draw the line at 8.

another question
what sort of deal do you see byrd getting next offseason, assuming he produces similarly to 07 and 08
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jan 20, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions
Yes.
That would allow DaMurph to be moved for pitching. Boggs need more practice hitting baseballs, Golson needs to work on his windmill moves, and Byrd could fill in for Borboun if he falters or needs a day off, plus back up all other OF positions.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 20, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions
Murphy alone probably wouldn't bring much
But he seems like the type of player that might make a good tack-on sweetener to help get a bigger deal done. Cheap, useful glove and a decent bat (despite the low OBP)… I’m sure there’s a lot of teams who would love to have him as a platoon or 4th OF.

Depends on the club, I suppose.
If a club sees him as a starting MLB OFer, then why not a good controllable BP guy, or a HiA upside pitcher?

value
I might do it only because I think it would increase his trade value.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
How would it increase?
Hes still a 31 year old whos had a couple breakout years. Right now you could sell teams on his past two years performance, his pending FA status (draft pick compensation) and his cheap one year deal.
Signing him to a two year deal would mean teams would have to be confident he keeps up production for both those years and they risk losing draft pick compensation if he does regress. Plus if he slides then they are stuck with a 3-4 million dollar guy who can’t perform. Remind you of anyone? (hint hint…his name is Cat)
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
JMJ's nickname
is Cat? If Byrd does produce in the first half that will have been 2.5 yrs of good (albeit streaky) performance. I think teams would be confident about what they are getting and see that contract as being very friendly. Byrd will probably want more than 1yr/$3.75M contract next winter.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
And if Byrd doesn't produce in the first half?
Trust me I am a huge Byrd fan but to think he is going to keep this up for another 3-4 years is kinda crazy if you ask me. Look at GMJ. He had a very similar upward trend while here but then went downhill fast. If you sign Byrd to a multi year deal now and he doesn’t produce to start the year you are stuck with him and his contract going into 2010.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I am pretty confident
that Byrd will put up ~110 ops+ in 2009 and 2010 if he were to stay.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Really?
Wow thats pretty optimistic.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
OK
2006: 76 OPS+
2005: 87 OPS+
2004: 54 OPS+
Not saying he is going to drop that far. but somewhere around 90-95 is probably a good guess.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If he has a 90-95 OPS+...
…then a $3-4 million salary for him for 2009 and 2010 is not unreasonable, nor would it be untradeable.
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 21, 2009 10:46 AM CST up reply actions
wasn't Byrd a plus defender in CF last year?
I don’t have access to +/-, but I think I remember seeing that. A plus defense CF that posts a 95 OPS is pretty valuable.
"Unless you have good speed and can be a weapon on the basepaths your bat is the best weapon you have. Now by no means am i saying go up hacking at anything and everything but drawing walks is an overrated trait in my eyes." -- bigsteve
Yep
I’m not a fan of defensive stats, because a lot of time they don’t correlate with other defensive stats, but to my eye, he looked average+ out there.
Even an average defensive CF with a 95 OPS is easily worth more than $4 million.
Get off my lawn.
Let's say Byrd...
…puts up a .270/.330/.380 line in the first half…
You think that he’s all of the sudden untradeable if he’s owed $3.75 million in 2009?
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 20, 2009 10:19 PM CST up reply actions
Maybe not untradeable
But you wouldn’t get back anything of substance. You damn sure wouldn’t get back anywhere close to what you could get back if you traded him now or if he is only signed for one year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Byrd and GMJ are not that similar
GMJ played well for most of his time here, but his 2006 was the only one where he had a real impact due to playing time and performance. Byrd has been a very good bat for the past 2 years while getting a good amount of playing time these past 2 years. He’s going to be 31 for most of next season like GMJ was in 2006, but given what Byrd has done up to this point, I don’t think we see anywhere near the type of disappearance act Matthews has pulled since that contract year.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Even if Byrd and GMJ are similar...
…if GMJ were owed just $3.5 million for 2009, the Angels would be able to move him in a heartbeat.

Except
Byrd actually has some defensive ability. Also, unlike Cat, he isn’t a platoon player.
You really shouldn’t compare anyone to cat unless they are nearly useless.
Get off my lawn.
Yes
I would do that deal, and then look to move him. Byrd for two years at $3.75 million per year is a pretty good asset that should get you something useful in return.
I’m surprised he’s only asking for $3.6 million. I expected him to get somewhere in the $4-5 million range. If they settle, I suspect it will be closer to his figure than the team’s (and that will still be a pretty good deal for Texas).
by Darrell McKown on Jan 20, 2009 8:41 PM CST up reply actions
A 31 year old in arbitration doesn't get big dollars usually
Theres a reason its taken him until 31 to get to his third arbitration year. I had projected 3 mil and that looks to be just a tad bit low. 3.25 should get a deal done.

Here’s the best part (it’s not a speech).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02Ao9jyq5Vk
John Williams’ arrangment using a melody from Copeland’s Appalachian Spring (which Copeland didn’t compose either, whatever).
I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.
That was nice
This morning I kept thinking, how in the hell are they playing in that cold? Especially the clarinet. No, Aaron Copland didn’t write that melody, but he’s about the only reason anyone is still aware of it, and it’s funny how any other setting follow a very similar contour to the one Copland laid out in his Appalachian Spring.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
It was ok
There were some nice parts there, but for my taste, there was a little too much crossing of the melody to each instrument, and there were definitely parts that reminded me of Appalachian Spring.
I especially liked the part at about 2:20 with the Simple Gifts melody in contrast to almost subway/city-like harmonies played by the violin and cello, but overall, there were parts where the harmonizations didn’t seem that great.
Just my taste, though.
R
Yeah,
I wasn’t wowed by it, but I’m never that impressed with Williams. He’s a movie composer and he’s good at that, but away from a film score he’s just nowhere near the level of a Copland or Barber. If they were going to commission something they should have gone with a younger composer. Same thing with Aretha, that was terrible. I guffawed when she sang her first line breathing after every syllable. “my (breath) count….(breath) ry ’tis (breath) of thee”. I’m pretty sure no one has every put that breath in the word country before.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
aretha
she performed on conan once fairly recently – I think freeway of love. It took her about 5 minutes to get warmed up but once she did, she was hitting (and sustaining) every note. In the cold with no warm up – it just wasn’t going to be her cup of tea.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
Speaking as a singer
You should be ready to sustain the air for at least two syllables.
And you ALWAYS warm up before any performance. And you do exercises to keep warmed up if you have to wait a while.
It seems more like that Aretha’s losing it, unfortunately.
R
crossing of the melody
agree completely. no need for 4 soloists to play like soloists. just have one person take the lead.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
That's the problem
with chamber groups made up of soloists. They play like 4 soloists instead of an ensemble.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
WOW
That would be a fucking bargain, most likely. CHONE sees him as being only half is 2008 self on offense, but even with that progression he’d be worth close to 14 million in ’09 with a similar performance across the rest of the board.
Nice!

IMO (in my opinion),
Holy god. How did this woman get a writing job? What are you doing inserting IMO in an article instead of actually writing “in my opinion?” Beyond that, even if you do write “in my opinion,” those are three words that are wasting space and just make your shit seem clunky and weak. WE KNOW IT’S YOUR OPINION.
And IMO wouldn’t be that bad, EXCEPT SHE THEN WRITES “IN MY OPINION” IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN HER USELESS AND UGLY SHORTHAND ANYWAY!
Oh my god, my editor might have fired me on the spot for doing something like that.
In fact, that whole sentence is bad.
IMO (in my opinion), the moves being made are too extra for my taste especially in the wake of a Double-A Prospect who hasn’t earned his spot yet.
Moves are too extra?
My she has a way with words.
Wait till you read the Melvin/JD one
It even has typos:
Daniels brought in Mark Teixeira, Milton Bradley, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Josh Hamilton but traded off Alfonso Soriano, Mark Teixeira, and Milton Bradley in hopes of reviving their pitching woes.
Daniels is making moves that are in the detriment of the team because he is sending the message to his bats that pitching is the future of the team. Nolan Ryan is the first player to have a Ranger hat on his bust in Cooperstown. However with Ryan at the head of the rotation, it wasn’t enough to bring the playoff contention. We need offensive as well defensive. We need to be able to put runs on the board. If there’s pitching but no bats, we’re in dire straits. This is the message I’m getting from Daniels: We can strike you out but we’ll win with ties.
This is borderline gibberish.
