Happy birthday, Alan Benes
Happy birthday to Alan Benes, who turns 37 today.
Benes was a first round pick of the Cards back in 1993, who could never stay healthy. In the awful 2003 clusterShowalter season, John Hart traded for Benes in an attempt to shore up the Ranger rotation, and he made 4 starts and posted an 11.40 ERA. He hasn't pitched in the majors since.
The Alan Benes Experiment is one of those things that epitomizes the disaster of the 2003 season and, really, the John Hart Era in general.
I can never get him and his brother, Andy Benes, straight. Andy was the #1 overall pick in the 1988 draft and had a pretty solid career.

I saw them at Emo’s back in ‘95. Pretty good, but they’re no Alan Parsons Preject…

Not to appear rude, but
Why are we wishing Alan Benes a happy birthday on the day we find our Eric Hurley is out for at least a year?
I hope Alan Benes has a shitty birthday.

I remember Benes
He would practically no-hit every team he faced the first time through the order and then get slapped around like a red-headed stepchild the second time through the order.
Who cares about Benes!?
Jeff Kent has finally called it quits.
Jeff Kent, decent hitter, crappy fielder.
Question:
Jeff Kent for HOF?
"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland
Kent = Jim Rice
If Rice is in then Kent should be too. Which is why Rice getting in was a terrible precedent.

It's interesting
the top 5 comparitive batters to Kent are catchers. Overall 5 HOFers + Ivan. Nice company, but I’d say no taking into account eras with those numbers. And fielding.
