Hurley Done for the Season -- Torn Rotator Cuff

Sigh.

Son of a Showalter.

UPDATE -- A little more info from T.R.

Eric Hurley underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair his right rotator cuff. He will be out for the season. Hurley missed the second half of last season with a shoulder injury and it never recovered. Surgery was recommended and performed on Wednesday by Dr. Keith Meister.

It’s like Kanye wrote this for Hurley:

Kanye

No, I had to look that one up. I do know most of the lyrics to “Flashing Lights,” though.

Strange thing is that I wasn’t even a Kanye fan until about a month ago, until I saw all those FX promos for Nip/Tuck (which I don’t even watch) and checked out some of his stuff on YouTube. Now I own not one, but two, Kanye albums.

I generally have really good taste in music, but I freely admit to being a bit of a dance-pop whore. I’m probably the only straight man in America to own multiple Kylie Minogue CD’s.

From Rotoworld:

Rangers pitching prospect Eric Hurley is expected to miss the 2009 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum in his right shoulder.

Rotator cuff and labrum damage is the worst possible combination for a pitcher and will likely be tougher to come back from than Tommy John elbow surgery. Hurley made his MLB debut as a 22-year-old and looked like a long-term No. 3 starter in the making, but is now out for 2009 and a major question mark beyond that.

I was looking forward to him a lot.

Now we have fewer pitchers I care about than rotation spots.

Sign/trade for someone please.

by DSheppard on Jan 21, 2009 1:46 PM CST reply actions

I think we have to sign someone

If we don’t sign Sheets, maybe a Jon Garland, someone that can eat some innings because this team cannot count on innings from McCarthy, Millwood, and Padilla for a full season. Harrison and Feldmon have not been in a rotation for a full year. sigh, this sucks

Next Year! We Swear!

by NothinG on Jan 21, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

Garland costs a draft pick

I don’t see the need to sign anyone, other than a Jason Jennings NRI type.

Hurley was expected to start the season in AAA anyway.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 21, 2009 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

True

I don’t want to lose a draft pick for Garland. Hurley was expected to have a large role in the rotation this year.

What is a Jason Jennings type though, a guy that gets hurt and doesn’t pitch the entire year? And, there was much rejoicing. I’d rather have some quality innings from Sheets knowing that he will get hurt as well, but at least he made 30+ starts last year.

Next Year! We Swear!

Sheets?

I don’t see how you can make much of an argument now for NOT signing the guy.

i get so frustrated when people here say that the rangers should sign sheets…

HE WONT PLAY FOR THIS FRANCHISE. NO PITCHER OF HIS CALIBER WILL PLAY FOR THIS FRANCHISE.

it’s not up to the rangers. texas SUCKS. any pitcher with any other offer will take that offer as opposed to coming here.

hes lives in dallas, we have his old pitching coach, the rangers were one of the only teams he met with at the winter meetings, his agent directly said he was very serious about texas.

i know you can’t take an agents words at face value, but theres enough evidence to take sheets seriously. you may have to still overpay to get him, but I think its a possibility.

Why the hell

do we HAVE to sign somebody.

Millwood
Padilla
Harrison
McCarthy
Feldman

It was going to be this all along, and Dustin Nippert was going to be the first in line to fill in for Millwood when his hammy starts to hurt again.

Replacement List Order
Dustin Nippert
Thomas Diamond
Tommy Hunter
Dereck Holland
Neftali Feliz

I would have slotted Hurley at the top of the replacment list, but it is not the end of the world that we dont have him. IT sucks for him, but it isnt a big deal.

- Mariners GM Bill Bavasi, after signing Ichiro to a $90 million contract

by tyd3311 on Jan 21, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

uh..

1) Hurley was in contention for a rotation spot out of spring training if healthy, I don’t know how you can assume he is behind Nippert who sucked last year, is no longer a prospect and was in the bullpen while Hurley was healthy.
2) I didn’t say we HAVE to sign somebody, I said I wanted them to sign OR trade for somebody. To take the “why the HELL” exception level to such a statement is ridiculous.
3) Your posting our awful rotation does not dissuade me from thinking we should acquire someone. We needed someone before hurley was injured. Even if Hurley isn’t in the rotation to start, he and Hunter would make up the “prospect” depth. There goes half that depth.
4) Listing Thomas Diamond, Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz as the replacement order for the start of the season is absolutely absurd. In reality the people getting starts in the likely situation of early season injuries are more people like Nippert, people who will both be bad and have very little chance of contributing in the future. Wasted starts.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Jan 21, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

misread one piece

you said hurley would have been ahead of nippert, so strike the reaction to that, though I think i still think he would have been in competition with feldman.

Though if hes the #1 replacement and is ahead of Nippert.. thats a very important dropoff in your first backup, who will almost for sure get a lot of starts. A high ceiling, 6 years of control homegrown prospect who looked good prior to the blowup start with injury vs nippert, who I already described my feelings on.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Jan 21, 2009 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

Nippert

I don’t think he meant Nippert is ahead of Hurley. I believe what he was implying was Nippert would be the first for a spot start when someone gets sick or has an injury that doesn’t require a DL stint. Nippert is going to start the season as the long man/spot starter. Hurley most likely was going to start in AAA and wouldn’t be available for those type of spot starts.

As for his list I would put Hunter ahead of Diamond and then Mendoza and even Poveda ahead of Holland and Feliz. If we are talking purely spot starts Holland and Feliz would both require roster moves and I don’t think the Rangers are going to make that roster move for a single start unless a serious rash of injuries strike.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jan 21, 2009 6:36 PM CST up reply actions

You are right

Obviously i screwed that part up and you are correct in what he was saying about nippert, which is likely accurate that if it was just a couple week replacement Nippert would get the spot start over Hurley, who would get it if it were an extended injury.

but yeah, striking off that reaction as I said in the post above, I still disagree with the majority of his post.

There is no way if millwood strains something and B-Mac gets hurt in April, which could happen, that thomas diamond is in the rotation after how he looked last season. I know he is getting up there in age, but he has to perform in the minors before hes considered a rotation candidate. And Holland/Feliz.. there is no reason to think the rangers will start them no matter how bad the injuries to the rotation, at least not until a good deal into the season.

And even if you roll the clock back before Hurley’s injury, ignore all the depth stuff and who ranks where, the Rangers needing another starter is not exactly an out there line of thinking.

the preceding post was a great success.

I can give you tons of failure stories.

Pedro Martinez a la 2007, Mark Mulder, Matt Clement, Kris Benson, Cliff Politte, Joey Eischen, Bartolo Colon, Tom Gordon, Ryan Wagner, Henry Owens, Freddy Garcia, Kiko Calero, AJ Murray. This year it was Chuck James, Wily Mo Pena, Tyler Johnson.

The success rate for guys that need surgery is very very low. Guys who are able to choose the rest and rehab route have a little better success, but not by much.

Grow over time. So unless he had an MRI during his troubles last year, it wasn’t as much of a noticeable issue back then. Even if he did have an MRI, a much smaller tear can be missed, though that’s not as likely. It could also be that they were hoping to rehab it and he didn’t respond to treatment, so then they discovered that he was actually tearing it rather than healing it. Again, not likely.

No hard statistics are available to document the disparity, but it is widely accepted that the success rate for pitchers returning from rotator cuff surgery is lower than the return rate for Tommy John surgery. Both happen all the time in the sport. And yet the latter has become fairly routine over the years to the point where pitchers undergoing Tommy John surgery often return to their previous level of performance within a year or so.

We trade away danks/volquez (and im not complaining about the trades.. im saying luck wise) and they have no health issues thus far and look like top of the rotation guys.

We keep diamond/hurley and get mccarthy, and they are all destroyed by injuries. What kind of luck is that.

Still plenty of guys for the rotation

Millwood
Padilla
Hunter
Harrison
Feldman
McCarthy
Nippert
Mendoza

Granted, I’m less than thrilled with this, but if just 1-2 of them show themselves to be quality SPs, then 2010’s rotation could be something special if the Rangers use the shedding of Millwood/Padilla salary to go get a couple dependable starters and if Holland/Feliz step up.

Look.

I am not saying that Mendoza would be the 5th starter on 20 teams. I am saying that most years, most teams have guys like him who go into camp with a shot at the same role he is likely to have with the Rangers this year (emergency starter, long relief, AAA depth). And Nippert, and the rest. I am not saying anything remotely controversial, or even interesting here.

Mendoza has talent. Nippert has talent. They are 7th and 8th on that list above(I would drop Hunter out of that top group to give him more time), and I think they’d be at least that low on most teams’ lists as well. I don’t understand why you think my statement is so controversial. Can I name 20 teams off the top of my head? Hell no, I dont’ follow other teams that closely. rangers of note
  1. - feliz
Feliz was something of a known quantity last offseason, having come over to Texas in the Mark Teixeira trade, but he was just a very live arm with no full-season experience and only 72 pro innings in total. He started 2008 by obliterating Midwest League hitters and continued to miss bats after a two-level jump to Double-A. Coming from a low 3/4 slot, Feliz has some of the easiest velocity you will ever see, mostly 94-97 mph but dialing up and down a little as needed. He turns his changeup over well, especially considering his arm slot, and gets good fading action on it, so it’s not surprising that his strikeout rate against left-handed hitters was 28 percent higher than it was against right-handed hitters. His slider is still inconsistent; it’s short, a good sign for someone who has a little bit of sling in his delivery, but the pitch can back up on him. He’ll have to return to Double-A this year and refine his command and control, since he can’t just blow it by hitters as he did in low A, but he could also show up in the majors at some point in 2009 depending on his own progress and the Rangers’ place in the standings.
  1. - smoak

Smoak signed on Aug. 15 — deadline day — and had just 56 at-bats in the regular season. But once he started hitting, he didn’t stop ‘til mid-November. In 124 total plate appearances between the Midwest and Arizona Fall Leagues, he hit .327/.411/.551 with five homers. Smoak is often compared to Mark Teixeira, and there’s some logic to it, as both are switch-hitting first basemen with big power and plus gloves. I think of Smoak as more of a switch-hitting Adrian Gonzalez — he doesn’t have quite the same raw power as Teixeira, but has a very disciplined approach at the plate and does have a plus glove at first. Smoak is legit from both sides of the plate, centering the ball extremely well and showing power both to pull and to the opposite field. His path to the ball is short and he sets up almost loaded, with a short move backwards serving as his trigger. His only flaw as a player is his complete lack of speed, which limits him to first base, but he’s an excellent fielder there his bat would play anywhere on the diamond.
  1. - holland
Holland’s isn’t the biggest jump on to the list this year, but it might be the most surprising. Texas wasn’t on Holland when he was in junior college until they saw him at the NJCAA World Series a few weeks before the 2006 draft, and they took a flier on him in the 25th round as a draft and follow. His velocity has since increased; he was 88-91 mph the following spring, then was 90-93 in the summer of ‘07 in Spokane. By the middle of 2008, he was already in Double-A, sitting 93-95 and touching 98, with natural bore and cut to the pitch and uncanny command. His changeup is already an above-average pitch, and he held right-handed hitters to a .215/.268/.305 line across three levels this year. His slider is still a work in progress, but it’s improving, and he has enough command and deception to get left-handed hitters out in the minors. He doesn’t have the raw upside of Feliz, but he’s not far behind him in potential and is ahead of him in command and feel for pitching, and is the most likely of Texas’ horde (pun intended) of pitching prospects to contribute to the big club in 2009.

Law ranks Rangers' farm #1

There’s that too.

Really likes the system:

1. Texas Rangers: The Rangers have far and away the best farm system in the game right now, with impact prospects, lots of depth (particularly in very young pitching) and plenty of prospects close enough to the majors to help the big league club in 2009 and 2010.

What is most impressive about the restocking of Texas’ farm system is that the additions have come from across the board. Texas has been one of the most aggressive bidders on talent in the international market, landing Martin Perez, Wilmer Font, Wilfredo Boscan and Esdras Abreu. The Rangers also have integrated their international scouting with the rest of their baseball operations — for most teams, it’s still a separate fiefdom — and have acquired several top international prospects in trades a year or so after missing out on them as free agents, including Neftali Feliz, Engel Beltre and Carlos Melo. Having one person, A.J. Preller, heavily involved in both international and pro scouting has made this integration easier, and the Rangers also use adviser Don Welke heavily in both areas. In addition, they have been aggressive in the draft under scouting director Ron Hopkins, signing several players who fell due to bonus demands and giving them above-slot bonuses that were appropriate to the players’ talents, including Justin Smoak and Robbie Ross in 2008 and Julio Borbon and Neil Ramirez in 2007. And the Rangers have worked the trade market to add prospects, cashing in Mark Teixeira for a huge package that included Feliz and Elvis Andrus, flipping Kenny Lofton for Max Ramirez and more recently dealing Gerald Laird for Melo and Guillermo Moscoso.

GM Jon Daniels has implemented a clear and consistent philosophy for baseball operations, centered on building pitching depth with an emphasis on upside, a tacit acknowledgment that pitching in Arlington requires better stuff or a stronger constitution than pitching in Seattle or Oakland. The integration across departments — amateur scouting, pro scouting, international scouting and player development — is still unusual in baseball, although the success of similar efforts in Boston and Tampa Bay is causing more teams to reevaluate their organizational structures.

Whether this translates into major league success for Texas largely will come down to the young pitching: Can these pitchers succeed in the Rangers’ ballpark, and can they stay healthy? If so, the wave of arms coming through Texas over the next five years will give the Rangers the best chance in their history to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs.

Go Strangers.

Rich has post up:
RHP Eric Hurley had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum today.

Hurley will start a throwing program in 12 to 16 weeks and is likely out for the season.

Dr. Keith Meister, the team physician, did the surgery at Medical Center of Arlington. Hurley had an injection in August and has been rehabbing since December, but things didn’t get better. He saw Dr. Lewis Yocum this week, who confirmed Meister’s diagnosis.

This certainly hurts the Rangers rotation. The club was excited about what Hurley could do in spring training.

YAY.

I can put up my fake Eric Hurley interview.

Iorange555: First off let me say, I’m really sorry to hear about you being out for the season. I was looking forward to seeing what you were all about, but hey better luck next year. You are expecting to be back next season, correct?

…..long pause. Hurley staring awkwardly into my eyes.

Hurley: Yeah sorry dude I totally just spaced out and started to eye fuck you, nice pupils. But they expect me to be back, I’m pretty disappointed, I wanted to prove myself this year. Fight for my role on the team, somethings just don’t work out though.

Iorange555: Yeah, I hear that. I was having a tough time a few years back and decided, I would take up male stripping, I ended up spraining my left nut, which I didn’t know could happen. I couldn’t walk for days. I had to strip in a wheelchair, pretty bad.

Hurley: Wow, yeah that sounds bad, I’m glad your um..your nut is feeling better now.

Iorange555: Yeah thanks. So do you know how this tear happened? How come they just found it?

Hurley: Alright, I’m going to be honest with you. I tore it on my own, on purpose. It was painful but worth it.

Iorange555: Wait, you’re telling me and everyone else. you injured yourself? I guess the obvious question is, why?

Hurley: Well Tommy got me hooked on this show called lost and I just started watching it, so I’m not sure what is happening. I’m focused this year on just catching up on lost.

Iorange555: You’re kidding right?

Hurley: No way! The show is so interested like I’m on the first season now and this chick who has been on the island for 16 years is warning the people that the others are coming and they stole her baby, it’s getting so good man. Look dude raises up shirt You see that bro? I got flight 816 tattooed on my stomach.

Iorange555: It’s flight 815…..

Hurley: No, you’re kidding right? The dude said it was 816 bleeping bleep I wanna stick my bleep up his bleeping bleephole and twist it the bleep around till he screams and yells my name like the bleep he is. that no good bleeping bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep, bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

Iorange555: So i guess we’re done here, good luck with lost. By the way they all die.

Hurley: BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP YOU! COME HERE YOU PUSSY.

She does realize that when he does resume, it’s unlikely his first throw will be 90+ off a mound, doesn’t she?

A timeline of Hurley since he was in the big leagues.........

June 12th, 2008 – @ K.C. 6IP 6H 4ER 0BB 3K (92 pitches)

June 18th, 2008 – vs. ATL 5IP 5H 2ER 2BB 5K (106 pitches)

June 24th, 2008 – @ HOU 6IP 6H 2ER 3BB 1K (88 pitches)

June 29th, 2008 – vs. PHI 5.2IP 5H 1ER 2BB 3K (102 pitches)

His next start was supposed to be on Saturday, July 5th. He had a hamstring pull the week before and was not able to make this start. After THREE weeks and not being on the mound, he is asked to throw a rehab start in Frisco.

7.1IP 4H 0ER 1BB 2K

The line looks great. However, he threw 94 pitches in this rehab start. After this start is when his arm started to be an issue. He then made this start shortly after his arm was hurting, which we all knew was bothering him because it was in the news:

July 27th, 2008 – @ OAK 2IP 4H 6ER 2BB 1K (50 pitches)

Is it normal for a pitcher to make a 94 pitch rehab start after not throwing for three weeks? Anyone know? If not, I am pointing at this point to when Hurley’s shoulder started bothering him.

I'm no injury expert

But I don’t think 25 extra pitches after a rest is going to suddenly tear your rotator cuff.
And I imagine they didn’t limit the pitch count since it wasn’t his arm he was rehabbing.

It does seem high, but for a hamstring problem I imagine many pitchers wouldn’t even take a rehab start at all before re-entering the rotation.

the preceding post was a great success.

Ughhh

Horrible news for the Hurley and the Rangers.

I usually go by the maxim that if a pitcher needs Tommy John, he has a good shot at coming back just as good if not better than he previously was (because of the tendon they attach in the surgery).

Anything with the shoulder, however, and it’s likely that they’ll never be the same.

I’m also somewhat wondering if it might even be worth dropping Hurley from the 40-man roster if we have a roster crunch sometime.
