On injuries and the "cascade effect"
Over at Mile High Report, there is a really good post up written by a poster who is also a doctor on what happens when a player gets injured, and how muscle strains or pulls can lead to other injuries (the "cascade effect").
A very good post, which I recommend that folks check out.

i was gonna say something about this topic but i thought it would get lost, but i had an experience with my arm that i learned a lot from
1st my elbow was tweaky and from throwing a slider (it was my fault for not warming up or throwing a pitch in a decade but it was kinda shot after that) i layed off that day, but it never got any better. So im throwing the next time, (months later) and i find myself compensating for my already shot elbow and im pretty sure i blew out my shoulder.
so i went from needing to warm up, to a shot elbow, to a shot elbow and shoulder.
I feel fur pain, Hurley.

My point was, Captain Empathy
that chances are if hurley screwed up his Labrum and his Rotator Cuff, that some1 missed something or he didnt tell some1 he was hurt, or they didnt care when he complained of soreness, or they shot him up and sent him out, whatever… b/c you dont just blow out your elbow and shoulder in one fail swoop. its not me im talking about, its the fact that Hurley blew out both, and my guess would be that he was pitching with a tender elbow or shoulder and then the other exploded.

I know it’s not “wrong”, but oofa that sounds bad to my ears.

So I’m not going to say anything at all.

Jim Bouton
Wrote about this in Ball Four. He says that a pitcher with a sore arm will wake up in the middle of the night and simulate throwing to see if it still hurts. Which just aggravates the sore arm, and etc. and etc.
Where is Mick Kelleher when we need him?
