To me, the biggest shame was the lack of love for The Wrestler. I was hopeful for a directing nod for Aronofsky, original screenplay, and for sure, Springsteen for Best Song.
On the other hand, I'm thrilled about Richard Jenkins and Michael Shannon getting nominations when both seemed like long shots.

Seems like a weird year
usually my movie viewing leads me to at least 2 or 3 of the main films, but this year I haven’t seen any of the top movies.
I don’t know if I want to see Benjamin Button – I read the short story about a year ago, right before I heard there was a movie coming out – and I can’t imagine how they can make a 3 hour movie (or whatever it is) out of a story that takes 30 minutes to read. The story is certainly interesting, but I worry about how Hollywood would stretch it out. Any opinions out there, since it is the premier film apparently?

They did so...
By making it Forrest Gump 2.
And really, the best film nominated will likely be the final winner: Slumdog Millionaire

Im just hoping
that Mickey Rourke wins the best actor award. Was Gran Torino released in 2009 or 2008?

I think this was perhaps the strongest crop of Best Actor in years.
Rourke should win, no doubt, but Penn, Langella, and Jenkins (who I really worried was going to get screwed over) all deserve to be right there. The Pitt pick I’m less sold on, as I could’ve seen Eastwood, DiCaprio, or several others there over him, but he had the momentum and the studio’s strong push.

i didn't want to see it but
I was home at a time when nothing else was out that I hadn’t already seen.
I didn’t like the movie at all but I can’t deny that both actors were very good. The story was just stupid.

Ha ha ha.
You’re never going to let go of the fact that I found Transformers entertaining, are you? It was actually pretty fun in the theater. I tried to watch it again on cable… and, yah. It’s unwatchable. Shia is awful. Worst mainstream actor of our generation, hands the fuck down.
But it doesn’t change the fact that Eastwood is the hackiest, most ham-handed director working in Hollywood today.
I haven’t seen Torino, but MDB was the cinematic equivalent of AIDS, his two WW2 movies were like watching Franky the Cat make a throw from LF to try to get a runner at home (boring, pointless, and took way too long to get to the end), and Changleing looked effing putrid from the trailer.
The last decent thing he did was Mystic River, and even that should have been better than it was.

The screenplay writer for Button
is the same guy who wrote Gump — not surprising huh?
It hit me about 3/4 of the way thru Button that it was like I was watching Gump. Then, I heard later on the radio that it was written by the same guy.

I haven't seen any of the best picture candidates besides Button (Four word review: "Enjoyable enough, I guess".), cause they aren't released to the unwashed masses as of yet.
And neither is the Wrestler.
I hate Hollywood, but only because they hated me first.
Although, actually… I don’t know what the Visitor is. I think I might know the movie they’re talking about, but I haven’t seen it and had no desire to based on the trailer.

It's a smaller film
But it’s really worth seeing. One of my favorites from this last year. Jenkins, as I’ve alluded to before, is absolutely incredible in the main role, and I was also hoping the film would get some support for Original Screenplay.
It’s somber without being manipulative, and I think the cast is a big reason why that is. Even if the trailer didn’t sell you, I’d still highly recommend it.

I live in in Greenville, SC.
It’s not really a cinematic hotbed, but, still.
Hollywood’s whole “Release ’em in NY and LA and then make the rest of the country wait 4 or 5 weeks” routine is getting pretty old.
I mean, most of those movies weren’t even in Atlanta at the time the Golden Globes went down.
If was NBC or whoever pays all that money to show those ceremonies, I’d be pissed.

Most of the big production/distribution companies are based in NY and LA. Releasing movies earlier in select places is more of a cautionary procedure than anything else. Usually, the movies expected to do best are released either in the summer or the holidays(so people will have a chance to see them, obviously), which fall at the end of the year. So, don’t blame Hollywood, blame the calendar!
I don’t know what Greenville is like but, still, but if all the major pictures are available in general theaters. they should be out somewhere near you.

I am also surprised
at how few nods The Wrestler got. That film was just so fricken sad, but not in a purposely-manipulative way like a lot of Hollywood tearjerkers are. It was just a genuinely touching and sad movie, in a beautiful way (if that makes sense). I hope Rourke wins Best Actor, he was awesome in that movie. And we all know who is winning Supporting Actor, so no need to talk about that.
I didn’t like Jolie in “The Changeling,” but then again I didn’t care for the movie itself so maybe that’s why I wasn’t as impressed at her performance. I think she is a little overrated to be honest. So maybe its that bias speaking but I was surprised she got nominated.

with what the movie offered, i thought jolie did pretty well
she has pretty good range as an actress.

For drama
her range is decent, but I would like to see her do comedy before I make a judgment about her overall range. And I don’t mean “Tomb Raider” cus even though both those movies were funny, it was completely unintentional.

that's kind of strange
i’ve never seen cate blanchett do comedy but i would readily say she has great range.
"To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant."
by ab03 on Jan 22, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Eh
I guess we just have different ideas of what range means. Blanchett has great drama chops but if that’s all she can do, then I wouldn’t say she has great range. Like Jennifer Aniston, she is a great comedic talent but most of her attempts at drama (except for “The Good Girl,” which I thought she was great in) have fallen short. So I wouldn’t say she has great range. It is limited, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t absolutely excellent in what she excels in.

Jennifer Aniston
Is a great comedic talent?
Is that what that was when I was watching Leprechaun?
by brettgardner on Jan 22, 2009 2:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I have never seen that
So I couldn’t say, but why would you take one of the more obscure movies on her resume? I was thinking more of her timing and delivery on things like “Friends.” I realize a lot of people hate that show but I thought she was very good in it.
by Melmart1 on Jan 22, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I just wouldn't say
That she’s “great” at anything, except exploiting her body. I couldn’t stand Friends, so maybe she was very funny in that—I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one.
But I did see Picture Perfect, The Breakup, Along Came Polly, Bruce Almighty, Rock Star, etc. Now, all those movies were dreadful, and that’s not really her fault, but she did nothing to save them.
The only movie I can think of where she’s not dead weight is Office Space.

Rock Star.
Totally random here, but I had a roommate in college who had pretty good taste in movies all around, except for one thing: He absolutely positively loved the movie Rock Star.
Watched it all the time.
It was… bizarre.
To this day I still can’t figure it out.
Smart guy, pretty level headed, but he thought it was one of the best movies of all time. He even went so far as to argue that Marky Whalberg should’ve gotten a Best Actor Oscar for the role.

I used to watch those movies with a buddy of mine. Whenever a new one came out we would watch it. There was one when he was in Vegas, one in space, etc. They were horrible, but for some reason we found them pretty damn funny in a cheesy horror kind of way. Kinda like Killer Klowns form Outerspace.

The only good parts of In Da Hood are the opening with Ice-T pulling all kinds of stuff from his afro to fight the Leprechaun and the cheesy-as-hell end credit sequence when the Leprechaun does his little rap. Lep in da hood up to do no good.

as sure as the year Julia Roberts won for “Erin Brokovich.” Now, don’t get me wrong — I didn’t think she should have won. I think Ellen Burstyn should have won, hands down … but it was a sure thing, everyone knew she was winning for weeks beforehand. I think we can say the same thing about Ledger.

I'd be happy if Ledger won, but I'd be equally happy if RDJ got it for Tropic Thunder.
Though just RDJ getting nommed for that role kind of made my day.
Both of those roles are the kind of greatness the academy usually ignores cause they’re too commercial and not dramatic enough or whatever.

i saw a good portion of the movies nominated this year..
First off.. Clint Eastwood does not suck.. Gran Tourino was a great movie.. He was bada$$ and hilarious.. Sucks it did not get its due..
The Wrestler- Mickey Rourke was really really good.. The movie itself was good, not great. Marisa Tomei was smokin hot..
Benjamin Button- Like stated above was Forrest Gump 2.. Pitt was good, but entirely too long..
Milk- I think Sean Penn should win Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk. James Franco was awesome as well.. Penn stepped a little outside the box for this one and it proved to be a good choice..
Frost Nixon was excellent.. Langella did a grea Nixon and might have won on a different year.
Last but not least, the best movie of the year was Slumdog Millionaire. The story was great and the acting was as well. I think that it probably should have gotten more looks than it did..
All in all I think it was a great year for the movies..

Milk and Sean Penn
Watch Milk and I Am Sam back-to-back. I bet you I could show you a scene from each and make you guess which is which and you couldn’t tell the difference. Either he’s not as great as he thinks he is, or he thinks gay and autism is similar.
by Apes and Androids on Jan 22, 2009 2:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
its supposed to be a really good impression of harvey milk
if sean penn sounds autistic, it’s because milk kind of did.

Also,
Tomei was smokin hot in The Wrestler. It was the first time I’d ever used the popcorn trick on myself in a theatre.

She's ridiculously good looking.
She’s getting hotter as she gets older, and she was beautiful when she was younger, too.
If you haven’t seen Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, then go ahead and rent it.
There’s some pretty nice scenes of her in that movie.
Very naked.
Very getting railed by a fat guy.

Yah, I mean there's butt loads of 17-24 year old girls out there who are technically prettier and better looking at this point.
But what is she, like, 40-something, right?
She’s aged unpossibly well.

I like how she gets naked in every movie now
I feel sad for her. Only way she can get work.
So Oscar tossed her a nom since they like to support filth. Getting naked for the first time (not her first time but anyway) is surefire automatic Oscar..aka Halle Berry and that joke win.
The critics definitely nominate based on trying to support sex at least as much as film quality.

Slumdog
It’s funny one of the chars in Slumdog is this Indian actor who apparently has been famous (the most famous man in India) since the 70’s there, and still today.
The ONLY American actor I could really equate to that, with that kind of longevity, was Clint Eastwood. Aka huge in the 70’s, still relevant today.

I wasn't expecting The Reader to land Best Director and Best Picture...
I was expecting The Dark Knight or The Wrestler to take the fifth spot for Best Picture. I was upset this morning when they announced that Christopher Nolan wasn’t nominated for best director. As a huge Dark Knight fan, I was pulling for him and possibly hoping he could have also landed a nom for Adapted Screenplay, but that was a stretch. I really can’t get on about The Reader, because I haven’t seen it.
Disappointment aside, I will be rooting for Slumdog Millionaire to win best picture and best director. I will also be pulling for Heath, who passed away a year ago from today.

I think "The Dark Knight" got hosed........
Christopher Nolan should have been nominated, and the film should have been nominated for Best Picture.
The only Best Picture nominee I’ve seen is “Frost/Nixon”. And that was a very good film. But I’d rate “Gran Torino” and “The Dark Knight” over “Frost/Nixon”.
And all “The Dark Knight” did was live up to the hype, and given that it was the most hyped film of the past few years, that’s saying something. It appeared on every “Top 10” list I saw published.
But, these same geniuses gave the Best Picture award to “Shakespeare in Love” instead of “Saving Private Ryan”, so I guess it shouldn’t surprise me.
But, if movies like “E.T.”, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, and “Star Wars” can get nominated for Best Picture, then the “greatest comic book movie ever” shouldn’t be discounted. Hell, I hate comic books and comic book movies. But “The Dark Knight” was awesome in every way imaginable.
by Hard8 on Jan 22, 2009 3:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
My question
Why do you give a shit? Isn’t your enjoyment of the thing enough? If you’re looking for Nolan’s accolades, I’m sure he’s satisfied with his truckloads of cash.
I realize it’s very trite to toss off these awards as “Hollywood giving itself awards”, but is that not what it is?
by brettgardner on Jan 22, 2009 4:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Still...
For a ‘comic book’ movie to be nominated for eight Oscars, including an acting nomination, is an amazing achievement.

The only thing that bugs me
is that Batman Begins get no credit for anything they did even though I believe it was the better movie and it was at least just as well-done. I like that the Oscars are starting to open up to the kind of movies they are nominating, but that still just bugs me.

The first Batman Nolan helmed was pretty shite, this one to my surprise was better, but still barely above average.

It's an amazing movie in my opinion
I didnt have much interest in watching it because the story sounds pretty contrived, but once I did I was pretty blown away.
Most great movies do something new as well. They’re not like anything you’ve seen before. Slumdog def fits that bill as well. Thats one thing I love about it.
Boyle is flat good. Trainspotting was a classic, and now Slumdog. I cant think of another director that has delivered two movies that I consider absolute classics. Spare me your Kubrick or whatever, I said that “I” consider classics, I only consider like 10 movies all time classics. I think Slumdog is in there now, with Trainspotting.
Some of Boyle’s other movies I’ve watched havent been great, 28 days later wasnt exceptional, and Sunshine while thematically was amazing and a stunning visual achievement imo, was somewhat boring and crap over the second half as a movie.

I was pretty excited about.
Then I read this review. Now I’m not so sure. Money line:
It’s a good thing Slumdog Millionaire is set in India, otherwise more people might notice what a wildly implausible, hokey, cornball cartoon it is. The scenery is nice, but the story is pointless unless you desperately needed to hear that LOVE CONQUERS ALL and YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW YOUR DESTINY, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, IT’S YOUR DESTINY. It’s the kind of feel-good garbage that only feels good if you check your brain at the door, a candy apple filled with shit.
I’ll probably see it anyway, though.
Both Metacritic and ROT seem to love it, and as much as the Oscars disgust me a little, I still like to see all the Best Picture noms so I can at least have an opinion.

I..
Havent seen Button..had a chance to in theatres around the holidays, but couldnt muster much interest in a 3 hour flick garnering so-so review, and yes the reviews were very so-so around that time. Now that it’s got all these noms though, I will watch it.
I’ve watched Gran Torino and Slumdog. Slumdog is amazing, should win best pic from what I’ve seen. GT should have also got some noms..in my opinion it’s not really Oscar caliber, BUT, it’s probably better than a lot of the other crap they nominate, and Clint deserves a going away/career present.
The cool thing is, not to advocate piracy, but around Oscar time all these films are available for download as DVD rips. I can watch em all.
TDK def is not Oscar material. Decent flick, highly overrated. Well, maybe some special effect Oscars or something, though I cant remember anything particularly memorable about it there either.

the 1st 2 hours of ben button, then i got up to go to the restroom real quick and that last hour just seemed to drag and drag and drag. still maybe one of my 10 best but the last hour is fairly boring and in the end IMO it’s a poor man’s gump.
still dont understand why you think dark knight is overrated

My reviews :
The Wrestler – I thought Marissa Tomei was much better than Mickey . I really didnt think it was Oscar worthy flick though.
Button – Too long and Cat Blanchet is bland and unattractive. I thought it was dumb that he left so she wouldnt have to take care of him and she ended up doing it anyway. If she really loved him she would of stopped him from leaving in the first place.
7 Pounds – I thought this movie was very good. Perdictable but it kept my attention.
