This day in LSB history
Three years ago today, we talked about the Orioles giving Jay Gibbons a four year, $21 million contract, and the problem with overpaying marginal players on multi-year deals.
Gibbons, incidentally, was released before the 2008 season, with two years left on his deal.

a little embarassed by my comment
but then again, we did overpay for MY for what I think were very similar reasons.
But I guess the thing that I was saying is I can see why this happens – but now that it has happened to us, I really don’t like it.

I may be biased because I’m Indian, but it was one of the best I’ve ever seen

THis is interesting
Yanks are interested in Sheets
yeah yeah, yanks get whatever they want (maybe), but, if they sign sheets, would that make it more possible for a Salty/Hughes trade?
What would you rather have, 2 years of Sheets and Salty or Hughes for several more…?

I would rather have Sheets and Salty
Only because I don’t think the Yanks will give up Hughes weather they sign Sheets or not.

I can't really see the Yanks wanting Sheets
I think they are going to get Pettitte and roll with a rotation of CC/Burnett/Pettitte/Wang/ and Hughes or Joba filling it out. I just don’t think the Yankees are really interested in adding another starter to their rotation on anything more than a 1 year deal with Hughes, Joba, and Kennedy around to fill out the bottom of the rotation (and 2 of them have pretty nice ceilings). I think its more likely that Heyman is just spreading that rumor because Sheets’ agent told him that, not because the Yankees have that much legitimate interest.

I think the Yankees intentions are....
to sign every available free agent on the market. That means that you and I have a shot at making a major league roster this year!

I don't think so
Hughes would still be the ideal hedge to Sheets getting hurt.

Yes, that logic
is like saying that if the Rangers sign Sheets they would be more willing to deal Feliz.

there has been talk about trading hughes, there hasn’t been on the Feliz front. Not really the same situations.

No, it's the same
to me. Most of the talk I’ve seen about trading Hughes is baseless rumor. Boston is not trading Buchholz just because they’ve signed someone, the Yankees aren’t trading Hughes just because they’ve signed someone, etc.
If they feel the return is value for value they’ll trade him. They will not trade him because they feel he’s some kind of surplus arm.

The thing is
if you’re the Yankees and you sign Sheets and give him a rotation spot, you have to have a backup plan. That backup plan can’t really be another established veteran starter, because you don’t have a spot for him. It has to be someone with options and someone who will either accept potentially moving up and down between the minors and majors or someone who doesn’t have a choice. Where are the Yankees going to find someone who could perform that role better than Hughes? Signing Sheets and then trading away his ideal backup plan would be very foolish for the Yankees’s situation, and I don’t think that they’re foolish. As your podcast guy says, it’s about the margins for the Yankees, and that would apply to both Sheets and having someone as promising as Hughes waiting in the wings.
Now, if they were to sign someone like Oliver Perez, who doesn’t have the injury concerns that Sheets does, okay.

Again, that’s kind of like us saying that we’d trade Feliz because we have Tommy Hunter.

I'm just sayin...
Have they given up on Kennedy already?

luckily for us.

I just wish we could
release Cat with time left on the deal. I just would rather have the bench spots occupied with folks who can be defensive subs, rather than a platoon PH/DH.
