Wii: Any good baseball games?

In spite of not knowing much about it and not being a video game person, I've been intrigued by the concept of the Wii for a long time.  I have a hard time sitting still.  Anyway, I finally broke down and bought one yesterday.

It came with a DVD called "Wii Sports" or something, and it has golf, boxing, tennis and baseball.  I haven't tried golf but the others are amusing, at least.  Just way over simplified.  I'd like to get a real baseball game for the Wii, but I want to be able to "swing the bat" and "pitch".  You know, do something other than just sit there.

So I've been reading and am confused.  There are some baseball titles for the Wii, but from what I can tell not all of them take advantage of what the controller is capable of.

I'd like to know what you guys think has the best balance between "fun" and an approximation of baseball.  I don't care if the characters are cartoon-like or not, but I would like it if it were MLB licensed with real teams, players, stats, et cetera even it's not super in-depth.

Any thoughts?

I haven't given it a spin yet...

on Wii, at least, but Power Pros 2008 is a blast on PS2.

It’s very Japanese styled, but it has MLB licensing. One of the best “easy to learn, hard to master” pick up and play baseball games out there.

I read a good review of that one.

Saw a 2009 MLB-licensed title at best buy yesterday on sale for 20 bucks, but I forgot what it was called. Now I can’t find it on their website or anything.

Heh

you know, “The Show” series is probably the best playstation baseball game out there right now, IMO.

I haven’t played it on a PS3 yet, but it’s a lot better than the 2k series.

I haven't found any good MLB games on Wii.

Which is a tragedy.

I've been wondering the same thing

I like the Wii, and the Madden games in football are pretty good for it. But I haven’t seen a convincing review of a baseball game yet.

by JBImaknee on Jan 25, 2009 1:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Given the format..

…I think it would be hard to satisfy the hardcore baseball fan with a Wii game. So my expectations are pretty low. I’d just like to know what the best available game for me is, and I’m guessing it’s Power Pros.

I want it to be just accurate enough to keep me interested, but basically I just want to take some vicious cuts in my idle time. Burn 20 or 30 calories or something instead of just sitting there.

I have a great PC…I may be looking for a different kind of baseball game later, although I have no idea when I’d find the time to play a serious one.

But the Madden games are pretty good? I’m not a huge football fan but did like Madden way back in the SNES days. I could see that being entertaining. Would it give me a little exercise?

by Black Francis on Jan 25, 2009 1:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A little exercise

you won’t be burning off a Big Mac with it, but you are at least moving your arms. I think they’ve integrated the controller pretty well (speed of your arm dictates the type of pass: bullet/lob; you tackle by pushing forward, etc).

The thing about the Wii Madden is that you can play at whatever level of complexity you want. They’ve managed to do (I think) a good job of simplifying the play selection, passing, etc, if that is what you want, while maintaining the classic 60 page playbook Madden games are known for if you prefer that. I’ve always liked the Madden games since the SNES as well, even though I’m also not a huge football fan.

As for baseball: I’m not a graphics snob, but I like fun gameplay and some depth in roster behavior, etc. I should probably go for Power Pros.

It also helps to buy one of the controller “gloves”. They improve your grip and prevent slippage.

Top Spin 3 is a pretty good game to play if you want to work up a sweat. And the Wii Fit programs are pretty fun as well.

I guess that’s why have trouble seeing how people could just let them go.

The rubber cover came later, nintendo would send them out free to people who bought the system and controllers before they added that.

MLB Powerpros 2008

This game is so much fun! I rented it and I loved it!

There are several types of gameplay to choose from in this game. You can play a game, season, franchise, or a very fun feature called Career, where you create your own character and try to work your way up to the major leagues in an “RPG” type setting. It is so much fun. The gameplay is a lot of fun too – you can either play the traditional way with the batting cursor or you can play wii-style where you swing the bat. I recommend renting this game first, because, while the players don’t look realistic, there are all 30-something stadiums plus others, and they do have real 2008 rosters on the game, so you might want to check it out.

I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re a hardcore baseball gamer, I mean it’s more of an arcade type game than an actual baseball simulation, but I LOVED this game. I would give it 9/10 stars, the one missing being the fact that I could actually hit with Ben Broussard on the game.

Here’s the link to the game. I’ve also heard they are coming out with a 2009 version probably in June with online play, which would be awesome.

It is fun. It’s also, I think, the only MLB-licensed game for Wii.

But, yes, due to the cartoon styles, you really have to have a high tolerance for cute chibis.

the price is why I can’t justify buying one.

I’m content with my PS2 right now. I also got my daughter a Nintendo DS for Xmas and it has a few games that I like as well. All my sports/history RPG’s I play on the computer or the PS2. As long as they keep releasing the games on the PS2 and PS3 I probably won’t buy the new system.

I saw that too

I’m trying to decide whether to buy that or buy a new version of OOTP that I know is a quality baseball game. The reviews look interesting for the PS3 version, but I am just a little skeptical as to what the quality of statistics will be in it. I’ll probably rent it first before buying.

FOM let us know how it compares to OOTP and which would be better to buy.

I’ve actually never played OOTP. A little odd since I love RPG’s and baseball games and OOTP seems to be a combination of the 2 from what I’ve been told. I always buy the MLB “The Show” games, but I think this year I may try a baseball game from a GM point of view.

hmm its being developed by the same guys who did

mlb 2k8 and “the bigs”

downsides:

stats extend to actual minor league players from Class AAA to short season minor league systems; due to MLBPA agreements, the players are not identified by name.

not that its THAT big of a deal but that sucks

more info:

your GM will have eight attributes to work with and improve upon. They include the areas of North American scouting, international scouting, pro-league scouting, player development, trades, contract negotiation, owner confidence and leadership.

For those who like their stats, that is also an area where BCG promises to rise above the basics. Sure, you will have your various splits, but if that is not enough, BCG has also brought aboard Baseball Info Solutions in order to give you your SABR needs.
One notable element of the engine is that it will not exclusively factor in player attributes during the simulation process. Instead, FoM will also measure in past career player statistics. In other words, the engine will factor in things like the past history between a pitcher and hitter when determining the outcome of a situation.
FoM will play out at a more rapid pace than regular baseball games because the developers have said that a single game will only last 10-15 minutes.

so hres another question – OOTP, diamond mind, baseball mogul, and this one – wonderwhich ends upthe best

mlb 2k8 and the bigs were by different developers

2k has various development groups, they are the publisher.

Kush games did 2k6-2k8, blue castle games did the bigs. And mlb 2k9 will be done by an altogether different developer, visual concepts.

Blue castle is the one on FoM, which is good since the bigs was actually a good game. Although arcade baseball and a management sim are about as different as two baseball games can be.

the preceding post was a great success.

I had to tinker with it a bit to figure everything out. Once you do, it’s pretty simple. I don’t actually manage any of the games. The biggest challenge is managing your minors and moving guys up through the system.

The best advice I can give you is to read the online manual. I read the whole thing and that made it much, much easier to understand. My Rangers won the Series in 2011. And then I promptly forgot to protect some players before the Rule 5 and lost 3 top prospects. : (

Haven’t got any new games since Guitar Hero quite a while ago. The only baseball game I tried on it was ‘The Bigs’ and I really didn’t like the control scheme. I’ve been looking for a good baseball game for it too but I haven’t found one. Maybe I’ll look into that MLB Power Pros thing too….

MLB Power Pros 2008

Don’t be fooled by the cartoony looks, this is the complete MLB game on the Wii. You can pitch and bat with the remote for easy pick up and play, or play with the nunchuck for a more PS3 like experience. It is very in depth with complete stats, trades, GM type game, or you can just play a season.

Try to manage better than RW though!
