Yanks, Pettitte reportedly close on a one year deal
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees and Andy Pettitte are closing in on a one year deal for less than $10 million guaranteed, but with incentives that could bump it up to $16 million.
That would give the Yanks a rotation of Sabathia, Burnett, Wang, Pettitte, and Joba, with Philip Hughes waiting in the wings. It would also presumably take them out of the Ben Sheets sweepstakes, which would be good for Texas.

And the Mets still seem
focused on Perez. This is great. The risk of signing Sheets is mitigated if the price can be brought down so he is forced to take an incentive-laden deal.
Pick up the pen, Ollie.

Everyone groaned at the TR story, that JD’s angling for a one-year/option deal.
That is the best-case scenario. And not a lowball in this market.
Strange to say but we may be getting Ben Sheets at a discount. Or somebody will.

I want him around
in 2010. We can’t have a rotation of Harrison, Feldman, McCarthy, Holland and Feliz. And either of Millwood or Padilla at the top of that doesn’t scream contender to me.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I’d just assume JD’s going for a team option.

I do too
But if Sheets only wants either a one year deal heavy on incentives or a two year big guaranteed deal I wouldn’t mind doing the one year deal. It would give us exclusive negotiating rights for that year and allow Sheets to see what we have going for us. I imagine if he comes here and pitches like he is capable and sees all our good young talent either here or that comes during the year he would be amenable to talking extension during the season.

why?
I know the injury scare, but what if Sheets comes out and has a decent year – he’s 1 and done right? we get picks, fine…but I want a staff ace for a while here. and while we have some very promising arms coming up, they won’t be a staff ace for 3 years at the very earliest. at least one on a good team. I want Sheets on a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option, highly incentive laden deal

A 1-year with a team option, considering nobody else is bidding, is the best-case for Ben Sheets
Anyway, question: How long would Sheets have to pitch healthy before you’d consider him worth a long-term deal?
Fun fact: Ben Sheets is 30 years old right now.

Well since they were never really in the Ben Sheets sweepstakes...

The Yanks are always in everything
Players like Sheets know the Rangers aren’t going anywhere, its always in their interest to wait until they know for 100% certain that the Yankees are no longer signing starting pitchers.

Who knows....
Maybe the Yankees will sign Sheets to be their longman out of the bullpen.
They could probably use Dunn on their bench as well….maybe Manny at DH.
Its just money.

Dumb move? 1B Casey retires at age 34
Former Red Sox first baseman Sean Casey is officially retiring, having signed on with the MLB Network. Casey, The 34-year-old, who played in 69 games with Boston last season, hitting .322/.381/.393, finishes his 12-season career with a .302 lifetime batting average to go along with three All-Star appearances. Casey’s role with the network has yet to be defined.

Free Agents
According to the ESPN Free Agent Tracker, there are 94 free agents still looking for a job. If nobody has signed Abreu or Dunn, I doubt Casey stands much of a chance.

Yep, its not like this is October
Hes listened for any offers and probably hasn’t gotten a major league deal. Given his lack of power (not even one homerun last year) hes not going to be a starting 1b/DH in the mlb.
I can see him wanting to retire rather than accept a minor league deal and hope he can stick around as a bench bat for a long time. Assuming he has been smart with his money and doesnt need the mlb minimum too badly.
the preceding post was a great success.
Personally
I’d rather watch him on MLBN than watch him slap cans of corn around the field. Seems like the type that will do pretty well on TV.

I've heard he's the nicest guy in the game.
Probably won’t offer tough analysis, but there’s nothing wrong with an affable guy. I agree, think he’ll do well in the studio.
Well
perhaps we are one tiny step closer to a hughes salty deal.
FOR MANLY LOVE BE HERE MARCH 25TH AT 2:15 AM SHARP
so,
we will get both Buch and Hughes for Salty with the Sox and NY sharing Salty….
Salty is becoming an absolute trade scenario legend…..

Does
the bullpen not really worry anyone else? It seems to me that there’s no one solid guy at the moment and everything seems up in the air and left up to competition in Surprise. Who will be the LR and MR guys for the middle to late innings?

Plenty of relievers still on the market.
What an odd offseason this is.

bullpen
All accounts have CJ ready for spring which is good. FX2 is fine. Benoit should come into camp this year in shape and ready and have a good bounce back season. Plus he is playing for a new contract. Nippert seems locked into the long relief/spot starter role which is suited well for him. Rupe should be fine as long as he doesn’t have to throw 120 innings this year like last year. And the competition for a couple spots should be fine. The bullpen really doesn’t worry me very much right now.

No cursing
No tirades
No verbal assaults
We might need to toughen this new guy up some…
That was way too nice
$5.5 million base,
with $5.5 million in incentives? Lol, he shoulda taken the offer on the table earlier.
What does this do to Sheets’ price? Wow.

Sheets
I would think it doesn’t do much to it. Sheets is much younger and even though hes a slightly higher injury risk its not like Pettite is a rock of solid health. I would say Sheets probably still gets a 2 yr guaranteed deal in the 16-20 mil range with even possibly some incentives.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Would Pettite have signed
here if the offer was 8 mill plus incentives. He would have immediately become our “ace”, sans Sheets. Was Pettite limiting his options to signing with the Yankees or retiring?

Yes, I think he was limiting his options.
The Astros told him they couldn’t afford him, IIRC.

Update from T.R. on Sheets.
Nothing new really. A few quotes from Nolan and the news that Millwood’s offered to tell Sheets where all the best doughnut shops are near TBIA.
