Zack Greinke news
Time to hear hearts breaking all over the Newberg report and LSB..
According to several different news reports in the KC area, Zack Greinke signed a 4 year extension with the KC royals. The supposed new deal covers his last 2 years of arbitration and buys out the first 2 years of free agency. Press conference at 2:30.
Sorry guys, you got to grow your own Aces it seems like, becasue there are not going to be any front of the rotation starters under team control on the trade market.
The Royals reached agreement Monday morning with right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke on a four-year contract that buys out his first two seasons of free-agent eligibility.
Financial terms were not immediately available.
The deal comes after Greinke, 25, produced a breakout season in 2008 by going 13-10 with a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts. He achieved career highs in numerous categories, including victories, innings and strikeouts.
Greinke had sought $4.4 million through arbitration before agreeing to the multi-year contract. The Royals had offered $3.4 million. He made $1.4 million last season.
Thanks for the link Rodney

Bummer. Great move by Dayton.
Easily the most important thing he did this offseason. He has KC on the track to respectability.

good move on the extension
but I question how some of his moves (Farnsworth, Jacobs, Guillen, Horacio Ramirez).
I thought this article was pretty indicting.

So now he is an even more attractive trade candidate
cause you get him for more years. If KC bombs in April and May, it will be time for JD to call KC up on the phone.

trade cost
His price also just went up. If you want him you would have to give up Davis and Holland or Feliz to start.

Which isn't so bad now
4 years of Greinke in exchange for 6 years of Davis and 6 years of Holland. Basically the 4 years of greinke will cancel out the 6 of Holland since it will probably take hijm a couple years to get anywhere close to Greinkes level. And throwing in Davis with Smoak on the horizon isn’t like we are creating a huge hole for ourselves.
I still wouldn’t do it but its much easier to think about now knowing Greinke is locked up for 4 years instead of only 2

What other players would need to be added? Murphy/Boggs, Main and Lemon?

Lower level guys
I don’t know who but Davis and Holland I would think would let you keep from giving up a guy like Main. I would give up Lemon and Boggs in a heartbeat along with Davis and Holland to get Greinke.

Only cause of Hosmer
I think if they didn’t have Hosmer then that would be a good start. yeah you’d have to add a couple filler guys but nothing of consequence.

Would you consider Kiker "of consequence"?
Cause thats about as high a prospect as you would have to go if its Davis and Holland headlining the deal.

But yes, Kiker is of consequence and not a “filler” guy like you suggested would get Greinke.

From Rotoworld:
Finally something positive in what’s been a disastrous offseason for the Royals franchise. Most thought Greinke would test free agency when eligible in two years. He would have been just 27, and with the way he’s improving, he could have been in line for one of the biggest contracts ever given out to a pitcher. Terms of this deal weren’t revealed, but $35 million would seem to be appropriate.
Ouch…

It has been pretty poor
The only thing about that is that it’s not like any of their moves have really set the franchise back or anything. They just seemed wasteful.

has less room for error, though. Like TX, though, their system is getting stronger.

Also
I’m not fan of their trades this winter, but I still think that Moore deserves some leeway for all the crap that people gave him over the Meche deal. Critical bloggers were certain that it was the worst of all of those high priced deals that winter, and he have been a solid signing all things considered.

Absolutely

4 years 38 M
We’d known for a while that the Royals were interested in signing Zack Greinke to an extension, but today’s news of a four-year deal is still noteworthy. Finally, the Royals have shown a willingness to keep a young talent rather than trade him away.
Greinke’s deal will pay him $38 million, sources told CBSSports.com.
by laxtonto on Jan 26, 2009 2:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Thats about right
His arbitration years held that down. He would have probably only gotten 4 this year and maybe 6-7 next year so in essence they got his two free agent years for 26-28 million or 13-14 mil per year.

Want some good news?
A big fat FWIW … but my understanding is that the surgeons found a best-case-scenario when they opened up Eric Hurley’s shoulder. The recovery will still be cautious – 2009 is kaput, but the prognosis is bold about his 2010 ceiling. The E-Train is in the station, not off the rails.
The moves being made are too extra for my taste.

Hurley
Thats great news on Hurley. My hope for him is to go into 2010 as a starter in OKC and about mid June be ready for callup if needed. No need rushing this kid back. If anything that timeline could keep us from rushing a guy like Main up.

hmmm
so if we keep Padilla for some reason, add him to Feliz and Holland, Harrison and either McCarthy, Hunter or Diamond, and we’ve still got a need for Hurley there? not that I’d be crying to get him back…and pitching depth is pitching depth…but let’s say they all pan out, I guess that opens the door to trade Padilla the break.

2010
All this is assuming we don’t sign Sheets. Yes I think we keep one of the veterans. McCarthy, Harrison, Holland and Feliz round out that rotation to start the year. Hurley starts in OKC and about mid season when Main should be hard charging looking like he is ready to be called up Hurley should be ready so we don’t rush Main.

The problem is that there are not enough specifics...
A partial tear of one of the rotator cuff tendons with little scar tissue or spurs and no severe fraying of the labrum would be really good news. It is still work on the rotator cuff, but it is nothing like having tendon replacement or some other career ending form of Rotator Cuff surgery.
The problem is without knowing what they did, it is hard to know how severe. People say “Rotator Cuff surgery” and it could mean anything from removing debris and frayed pieces of tendon from a partial tear, to removing small pieces of bone to allow for freer movement because of impingement, to attaching two pieces of broken tendons together, to reattaching tendon to bone or any combination mentioned above.
Without knowing what they did it is hard to tell how severe. Hopefully he comes out of it OK and regains full range of motion and shoulder strength. After he gets all of that, I will then be wanting to know if he can pitch, but defiantly not before…
Good Luck Hurley on your recovery
He has looking forward to him 3 months of not being able to use his arm for more than lifting something the weight of a cup of coffee. Even then they want you to keep the arm close to the body and only lift at the elbow. Then Rehab. Not fun.

You know, I guess this deal shows just how bad things are right now in the baseball economy
A year ago, Grienke’s probably counting the days until his free agency, but instead he’s locking himself into four years there. Perhaps OC would’ve been right about his willingness to sign an extension after all.

Im sure it played a factor
But you got to look at it like this. In arbitration this year he was going to make about 4 million. Next season probably 6-7 million. He basically signed his first two free agent years away for 26 million or so. Sure he would have probably got more but he will still be young enough when this contract runs out to get that huge huge payday.
