Johnson
As far as I’m concerned, his opinion is unimpeachable.

Its a good comp
The difference is when the rays brought their young pitching up they had little to no offense behind them. So while the young pitchers struggled it was magnified by practically never being ahead and pitching with the lead. The Rangers offense is not only young but good already so breaking in our young starters should be easier. We all saw how Matt Harrison could win 9 games last year even with some pretty bad peripherals. If you get run support it is so much easier to pitch especially as a youngster.
I doubt we make that kind of leap this year like TB but a jump to competing for the division is not a big stretch.

Not a good Comp
I disagree, it’s not a real good comp. There are definitely some similarities but not enough, and definitely not in the pitching and probably not in defense either.
Where’s TX’ version of shields, young stud all ready pitching in the majors for 2 near-full seasons? Where’s TX’ Kazmir, young fully established stud in the majors?
So that’s 40% of a starting 5 where we’re not even close to Tampa. We have Milllwood and Padilla.
We have some young stud pitchers, but more or less they’re in minors still.
While the move of Young and bringing in Omar might provide a bump in D I’m not sure it will provide the jump many were expecting Tampa to take last offseason withtheir changes.

No we don't have a Sheilds or Kazmir
yet
But when Shields and Kazmir were first starting out they didn’t have a Kinsler, or Hamilton, or Davis in the lineup backing them up. I don’t believe the Rangers are going to leap all the way to the WS next year but with our good young offense already in place our young starters will have the luxury to not have to pitch shutouts everytime out to get a win. Pitching with the lead is a great luxury to have and makes things so much easier especially on young guys.

Huh?!
Actually Shileds did have a Kinsler and a Hamilton and a Davis. He was the 172 OPS+ Carlos Pena, he was the 136 OPS+ Upton, he was the fenom Longoria. That’s certainly comparable.
So the Rays had the Rangers O and great pitching all ready pitching well at the major league level. Where’s the Rangers pitching version of the Rays again?
And what does it matter if Kazmir had any offense behind him 3 years ago, we’re talking about the 08 rays!

Yeah the 08 Rays
I thought Shields had come up 3 years ago for some reason…my bad. Kazmir however pitched 3 years in TB with nothing behind him. Who knows what kind of numbers he would have put up with a good offense. When Holland and Feliz and Main get called up they won’t necessarily have to win games by themselves. Alot of times they will be able to pitch with a lead early in games. Look at the run support Matt Harrison got last year and his W/L record. Im in no way comparing him to Kazmir or Shields mind you but he was able to focus on pitching rather than not losing. I think that will help him tremendously next year and down the line. And once our more heralded prospects come up it will make it that much easier on them.

Yep
the Rays had an offense almost as good as the Rangers. That’s why the Rangers scored 901 runs last year and the Rays scored 774.

Fine
Just one more reason the 08 Rays are not a good comp for the 09 Rangers.

feliz in theory is our kazmir
(ignore we coulda had kazmir in the draft, it still burns me up) my comparison is we got feliz like the rays got kaz from an organization that either didnt know what they had or didnt have the patience to get him there. feliz was a throw in(even though i think JD targeted him) and kaz was basically given away for pitching help.
the key thing that is different is that we have never been the 1st pick in the draft and gotten our price’s etc. our talent has been much more from the ground up while their talent has been more of a top of the draft no brainer talent swoop.
Rays never had feliz’s in trades, or Holland’s pop up who were late round picks. Boscan’s and Perez’s who were LAFA’s who the rangers nabbed from the big boys for cheap. Teams that can pull that kind of rebuild off are much more likely have continued long term success in keeping a top notch farm system for years to come (and hence long term pennant contention) than a team like the Rays that plucked the cream of the crop from the draft and were willing to come in dead last while those players developed.
I really think if JD can get though this 5 year rebuild and still have a job he will be here for the next 10+ years (assuming Hicks pays him right and doesnt let the yanks or dodgers steal his a$$).

The 08 Rays
>>>feliz in theory is our kazmir <<<
That’s comical! The 08 Kazmir is >>>>>> 09 Feliz.
Shoot, the 08 Price > 09 Feliz, not to mention the 09 Price > 09 Feliz..

08? 09?
what are you mumbling about? we’re talking 2010 or 2011 here earliest…
your comparing the effects on our major league roster of a AA baller who may make the club at some point this year to a major leaguer who pitched his 1st major league inning in 2004?
im not talking this year, im talking how they were acquired, what the team that traded them thought they were when they traded him etc. not their impact on the rangers or rays last season. kazmir had pitched 575+iP before he pitched 2008. If feliz comes up this season and starts going at the 2009 clock, his equivalent to kazmir’s 2008 will be in 2013…
kazmir has 3 full seasons in the majors before 2008. when we are in 2012 or so, yeah feliz is our kazmir (in theory of course, the kid could get hit by a bus tomorrow, who knoows).
we arent on the same rebuilding schedule in case u didnt notice, we are about 4 years behind. maybe more.
my comparison is that neither team that had X (X is our feliz and their kaz) thought enough about them to keep them long term or werent patient enough to develop them, and each team (rangers and rays) plucked X from them and they within a season were some of the top rated pitching prospects in all of baseball.
we arent talking stats here

I agree with Kevin Goldstein, though.
The Rangers aren’t going to make a sudden leap like the Rays, it’s going to be a steady climb.

I think any jump
is still in 2010 or 2011. Until you see more kids in action, its tough to see where the jump comes from in ’09. I doubt Offense is any better, and any big improvements would have to come from Runs Avoided, and the Pitching staff seems a lot like last years.
Get off my lawn.

2011
+1
09 Rangers are the 08 Rangers with more development. We’ll be alot closer to the 08 Rays in 10, but we likely still won’t have two established or establishing young studs taht they all ready had to start 08.
We’re progressing, and plenty of reason for a birght future, but we have nothing of the young pitching at the end of 08 that the Rays had at the end of 07.

2011
thats my year i think we start to really show it. 2010 seems to early. i know a lot of fellas here are 2010 guys, i just dont think its very realistic.

I think 2010 is possible.
Expecting it is optimistic, but I certainly think contending is not out of the question. Especially in a weak division.
I’m not sure the A’s will be weak, though.
by philkid3 on Jan 26, 2009 5:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree with that
At least I don’t strongly disagree. 2010 is possible, just very not likely.
My biggest problem with competing in 2010 is we just have nothing in the majors right now for front of the rotation pitching.
To use the Rays, they all ready had front of the line starters pitching in the majors. Even a well establsihed stud. Our front-of-the-liners are still in AA. That’s an enormous difference and therefore we’re likely more than 1 year away from significant contender, which puts us at 2011. And of course there can be some debate how likely 2011 even is. TNSTAAPP.
Sure we could get lucky and win the division with 83 wins. Sure we could get lukcy and win the division with crazy fast development of our pitching. None of those is that likely, as you well recognized in your defense.
by gr7070 on Jan 26, 2009 5:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
seems like a lot of guys are on the same page we are at least
i agreed with both you guys on 2010, its possible to start being taken seriously but 2011-14, thats our time.
i dunno if thats pathetic or just realistic but i expect us to be in control of the division those years…
… after that, its up to hicks to resign them, (assuming he doesnt default on the LFC loan and the rangers become owned by the british government…

Agreed.
Goldstein said we should expect to be over .500 this year, and I think that’s optimistic. I certainly think we’re capable, but I think we’re just about the same mediocre team we were last year, with maybe a little more potential upside.

Sudden leap
In the sense of just making the playoffs, or going far once there?

Performance.
Runs scores, runs prevented, wins, etc.
Playoffs are up to the teams we can’t control.

I agree, and I think Andrew Johnson does too
I think he is focused on the rise from the cellar, not the dramatic one season turnaround

by thedudeabides on Jan 26, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think the Rangers right now
Are more like the 2007 Rays: they’ve still got a ways to go to fill in all their holes, as some of the young guys aren’t quite there yet, but the picture is starting to come together. If we do make a sudden leap, it’s still most likely another year away – but it is coming.

I don't really think it's coming.
I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden leap. To begin with, we’re already better than the Rays were (though not much better than they should have been in ‘07). And I don’t think we’re going to have a year where, suddenly, we jump from awful to awesome. Partly because we’re not awful and partly because I don’t think we’re going to even go from mediocre to awesome in one year.
