Ranking Salty?
With all of the talk about the Ranger farm system being #1 in baseball it got me to thinking about where Jarrod Saltalamacchia would rank if he were allowed to be ranked in our system? After all he is still younger than Teagarden and Max.
My feelings are very mixed as to where I would rank him and would like to see what the lonestarball nation thinks about Salty. This is just not where he would rank among our catchers, but the whole (minor league) system. I think he would be in the top 10, and I'll go with 6 in my personal ranks behind Feliz, Holland, Smoak, Main, and Andrus.
Let's Discuss? Heck even throw Chris Davis in if you want.....

I think he'd be in the same range
As Max and TT. He hasn’t impressed anyone at the ML level, but there is so much potential there, seeing as there was a time not long ago when he was more highly regarded than either of these two catchers have ever been. This is not Jason Botts; he hasn’t been called up for 3 straight years and showed mediocrity. Salty’s still quite young and is a good sleeper pick to break out this year,

well
he has been here for two years of mediocrity, hasn’t he? so if he is just mediocre this year does that make him Botts or does the age exclude him from that?

top 3-4
I’d put him up there with Smoak and Feliz in front of him and possibly Holland. Salty will hit and plays enough defense that he isn’t a big liability. Switch hitting catchers with power and patience don’t come around very often.
If Davis was still eligible he’d be #1.

BP does it that way
Kevin Goldstein on baseball prospectus, in addition to his top 11 prospect rankings does another version where he includes all the talent owned by the team, 25 years old or younger, even if at the major league level. If you get BP premium you will get his take on this question (and Harrison and Madrigal and Duran) when he finally gets to the Rangers.

I think we should do a virtual community prospect ranking
of our key young guys who are no longer eligible: Harrison, Davis, Salty, Boggs, Murphy. Seems like a good project for Dirkatron.
FWIW, I’d put Harrison around #10, Salty around #6, Davis around #3 (higher than Smoak, IMO), Boggs and Murphy in the low teens.

Davis-1, Salty-6
Based on what Salty did in AAA last year for the couple weeks he was there I would think if he was in AAA for a full season he would have put up tremendous offensive numbers. Thats always been his calling. Davis would go #1 followed by Holland, Feliz, Smoak, and Andrus before Salty at 6. Thats one hell of a top 6 with the oldest being 23 years old.

Davis..
Not sure he’d be #1. I have seen several national guys say that they like Smoak more, and he is 3rd. I know Davis is in the majors and has already torn up AA and AAA, but some might rank him #4 in our system behind Feliz, Holland, and Smoak.

I understand having Davis behind Feliz and Holland
but I don’t see any way one can rank Smoak ahead of Davis right now. Sure its completely possible that when all is said and done, Smoak will be better than Davis. And if you are ranking guys simply based on their ceiling, you probably put Smoak higher. But Smoak hasn’t really even played professional ball yet! He generally profiles very similar to Davis, but with more risk. I don’t care how good he looks and his stats in college, there is no guarantee he’s going to succeed to the level that people anticipate.

Well...
I’d rank Davis ahead of Smaok at this poit too, but prospect rankings are all projections. There’s no guarantee that Feliz and Holland will pan out either, but you wouldn’t rank Harrison ahead of them because he won 9 games in the majors would you?

Smoak vs Davis
The advantage Smoak has in ceiling to me isn’t great enough to make up for Davis’ progression right now to rank Smoak above Davis. I could see the debate of Holland or feliz above Davis but Smoak isn’t a question IMO. Now in a year perhaps if Smoak has torn up AA and is knocking on the majors then you could say his ceiling is so much greater than Davis’ progression that he should be higher.
As for Harrison, Feliz and Holland have such high ceilings that it more than makes up for the progression level-wise Harrison has on them.

I think Davis has the higher of the 2.

Apologies
I see you have posted about a million times on the site, so I know you are not some wandering person who doesn’t know the difference, my apologies, however, how can you have Harrison on there and not Perez? And how do you rank Salty so far above TT and Andrus?

no apologies necessary
I have caught some flack in the pass for this but I tend to add weight to players who have succeeded at higher levels. If you are going to include palyers that have ML experience then they should be weighted accordingly, imho. Maybe Main should be changed to Main/Beavan/Perez. I think the 3 of them have about the same potential but with each having varying degrees of success.

True...
I agree about some people ranking merely on potential. If potential were the defining factor we would have 10-15 major league ready players in each system. I personally think Harrison has trouble this year. I hope he doesn’t but I’ve got a gut feeling that he gets rocked. Salty hasn’t proven much in the majors (which is probably why no one has taken him this offseason) but his winter ball numbers were great. Hopefully he can keep up the pace he started this winter.

Salty
I would have him ahead of Teagarden and Max.

Salty
He would probably be around 5-7 for me (behind Holland, Feliz, Smoak, Andrus). He’s still very young and was highly regarded coming out of the Brave’s system. He just needed to stay in AAA all last season and be able to play everyday instead of coming up here and playing every couple of days and then getting injured
Is it Spring Training Yet?

Salty #3
I really think the Rangers are going to screw up their catching situation. I have a feeling that they would like to go with Teagarden as their catcher. He has the D that they like and they probably feel that his bat is passable. But what do you do with Saltalamacchia? He needs to catch fulltime at the ML level to maximize his value. But if he struggles I think Washington will eventually end up platooning TT and Salty thus hurt both of their trade values. I almost think the Rangers should go ahead and ship Saltalamacchia off to Boston for the best deal they can get.
