Tuesday morning stuff

Quiet day today.

Jim Reeves says the Rangers could end up with both Clay Buchholz and Ben Sheets in their rotation to start the season.  I still think that's highly unlikely.

That's about it this morning.

But that wouldn't necessarily preclude

a trade for a young catcher for him to mentor. I think at this point, though, both TX and Boston are content to wait until mid-season before assessing the catcher market again. They’ll stick with Varitek for now and only trade if he somehow refuses to take their offer.

I know, but the article treats it as if the deadline really means he may not take it.

At the very least if they wouldn’t cave on buchholz through january i can’t see them doing so with varitek. The (well.. rumored) bowden/bard type offer probably stays on the table.

But yeah, probably midseason again.

the preceding post was a great success.

Agreed

I can’t imagine Varitek not taking that offer. Chad Finn has a good point about Zaun. Boras is greedy, but not (usually) stupid.

The latest I saw is that Tek may actually prefer just a one year deal without the options, as he might think he can rebound to increase his value for 2010 beyond $5M.

I’m surprised Reeves doesn’t also think that because time travel might be theoretically possible there could also be the chance that they could go back in time and get Nolan Ryan to be both President of the team and front of the rotation starter. That would be a mind boggling rotation…

Varitek

To read SOSH you’d think Boston’s erring in re-signing Tek at any price, and that’s leaving aside the fact he’ll probably bitch about a bench role.

Those guys watch a lot of games and they are not looking forward to his ABs.

Somebody here posted about Posada’s ambiguous health – that’s something you know JD and Theo are aware of, far as possible market developments as soon as Spring Training.

JD has no incentive to back off his demands, kudos to him.

Good job by Reeves
Think about it for a minute: If things fall right, the Rangers could still add Sheets and Bucholtz to their rotation before spring training

That’s just fantastic journalism to make it seem like such an option is somewhat realistic. It’s a longshot.

Catcher thoughts

Varitek will sign, and Boston will look very smart as he bounces back (slightly) from a terrible 2008. They will wait to acquire the mentoree.

The Yankees may decide in ST that Posada really can’t stay at catcher and their internal options suck, so they may and up being a better partner in the short term.

The Rangers are content to let the Teagarden-Salty duo play and see who looks good long term as a keeper. Right now I think you could flip a coin as to which of those two looks better down the road since each has different concerns.

The catcher market looks static until and unless an injury occurs.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Jan 27, 2009 9:48 AM CST reply actions

I don't think Tek will bounce back.

I think he got his “dead cat bounce” in ’07. 2 points about his offense:

1. his splits vs RHP form a nice bell curve, with the peak at ‘05. This has been the core of his offensive problems (as he still hits LHP as a RH batter quite well) and I just don’t see it improving.

2. Bill James noticed a common occurrence in the careers of older players where the hitting shows a small spike (or rebound) as their BA dips, but they more than make up for it with walks (their OBP stays the same or goes up a little bit). When the league figures out that they’re working a walk it will challenge them more. The hitter winds up being exposed and is effectively finished.

Tek’s offensive numbers in 2007 were bouyed by a career year in taking free passes, despite the fact that his BA has fallen (if you combine his 2008 with the second half of ’07 he only hit ~.220). These facts make Tek look like the poster child fpr James theory.

Bard duplicates Tek’s skill at hitting LHP. Bard is a LHH, with the regular platoon splits that implies… that looks like a decent platoon to me if the FO can get past the whole “Must have veteran leadership behind the dish!” fetish…

The other thing I wouldn’t be surprised about is if some of the reports about who’s being offered for what aren’t that accurate. The Boston media gets very little from the FO (which I think leads to the same story being written an awful lot). I don’t know if JD has similar information controls, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that a deal got done quickly and looked quite different than what we’d expect…

The source said the Mets are “having dialogue” with the agents for pitchers Ben Sheets, Randy Wolf and Jon Garland. The Mets have a hole with the fourth spot in their rotation and expect to have it filled before the official opening of spring training on Valentine’s Day.
Sheets, the oft-injured righthander, is an intriguing option, but the Texas Rangers are considered the front-runner. Sheets has a home in Dallas and met with club officials last week.

“He’s looking for a multiyear deal,” Rangers president Nolan Ryan told MLB.com. “That probably comes down to the medical review and what [owner Tom Hicks’] position will be.”
