Ben Sheets rumor update
According to Richard Justice (on 1560 AM in Houston about 5 minutes ago), what he's hearing is that the contract terms the Rangers are looking at with Ben Sheets are 2 years, $20 million.
Take that for what it is worth.

But I hope he has good sources and hes right.

This is a serious question.
Can’t they sign someone even when they’re not here? also when do they get back? Friday?

They have a jet to go back and sign someone anyways
so I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I think they could agree
to an offer in principle, then do the physical and paperwork later.

Nah, I think someone said earlier this week
that they want to have the physical done before they agreed to an offer.

They're not going to do
anything this week, or at least, it would surprise me.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I can't see Sheets
taking a physical before an offer is made. It hurts his position. Also, if word got out that he took a physical and then no offer is made by Texas then he is toast. He might be able to get a NRI by someone but that is it.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Yeah
An offer has to be made first that both parties agree upon, then the player takes the physical. If the player doesn’t pass the physical, they would take back the offer. It would be stupid for Sheets to take it before, but his agent is smart enough to say no to the physical beforehand

I love
this show. Glad it is getting big attention with the after-Superbowl show. We need the gif of Andy punching the wall for the GTDs, whenever Wash makes a pitching decision someone doesn’t like.
Sorry for the ignorance
but does this mean that this is what the Rangers are looking at offering or this is the price that Sheets has given them to look at?
well no.
If he denied that…then that’s no good cause I doubt we’ll give him any more than that. But if we might offer him that….then that is good.
You dick that was uncalled for - male cheerleader
my thinking
is that is what the rangers are looking at offering him, which i would say take it dude, give the rangers some hope of a good rotation and please stay healthy
Incentives/Option year
Those two things have to be the key negotiating points with Sheets and the Rangers (or any team for that matter). And if these numbers are being discussed, then you have to think the incentives/option year are the only thing holding this up.
It’s either that or Sheets has no intention of signing here and/or he and his agent really think he would get more guaranteed money than that.
Don't you ever damn call here again
pass word to Tom Hicks that I’m good with that deal, in case that’s what’s been holding things up.

I think...
This isn’t a bad deal but they can get better. I would offer 2 years with a mutual option on the third year. 6 million a year with incentives up to 12 million. If he performs well enough for the 12 million he’s worth it, if not he cost you less than Hank Blalock and you can get rid of him before 2011 when you rotation should be full of young guys.

If no one wants a guy like Sheets why would they want Millwood or Padilla, best bet is All-Star break for players. Keep your fingers crossed they might be a little surprising this year.

Signing Sheets
and trading for Millwood/Padilla are different issues entirely. I’d imagine most people are concerned with Sheets Flexor Tendon with regards to injury issues.
Neither Millwood nor Padilla have those type of concerns and are both around the same cost as Sheets

Does it make sense for a team like the Dodgers, who need a pitcher, to trade for someone like Millwood when they could get a better pitcher in Sheets at almost the same price?
...Snoop Doggy-Dogg... Ya need to get yourself a jobby-job.
by oc on Jan 27, 2009 5:51 PM CST up reply actions
Depends
on their feelings about the injury issues. Do the Dodgers feel like they can compete for their division this year? Millwood is durable, he will give you at least 25 starts and most likely 29+. Sheets is clearly a better pitcher but do you want to risk him going to down for the entire year or possibly two years at a hefty price. Plus Millwood’s is at the end of his contract.
Maude Lebowski: Lord. You can imagine where it goes from here.
The Dude: He fixes the cable?
Not with Hurleys injury
When Hurley was healthy part of the reason people were saying one of them had to go was because otherwise we would have to start two of our young pitchers in OKC and they wouldn’t get as much ML time this year. Now that Hurley is out only one would have to start in OKC and would still get plenty of ML time you would think.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
BEN SHEETS WAS AN 8 WAR PLAYER IN 2004?!
I don’t remember his season that year at all. That’s bananas!
Anyway, 2/20 is reasonable even if he gets hurt. He’s been worth that every single year of his career.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT

+1
I’m pretty excited about the possiblity of Sheets in the rotation. I can live with Sheets/Millwood/Padilla at the top of the rotation. That will be the most experienced top 3 of the rotation I can remember this club having in a long time.

Probably Moreso...
Neither Helling nor Sele were at Sheets’ level, and Millwood has done more in his career than either too. Padilla is easily on par with the Burketts of the world.
I really hope...

I’d still like it to be 2 years with a team option for a 3rd though.

For those who heard Justice
Did Justice make it sound like Sheets wants 2/20 and we’re considering that? Or that we’re looking to get a deal done if Sheets will take 2/20?
I can’t tell from the way Adam wrote it up — but my guess is Justice said it that way, hence Adam’s “take that for what it is worth” comment.
Weren't the figures days ago a little lower than that? Like 2 years 18 million?
These kinda sound like his demands.

2 and 20 would be fine...
if it is structured something like 8 million for ’09, 10 million for ’10, $14-$16 million for ’11 with a 2 million dollar buyout. That guarantees Sheets 2/20 and guarantees the Rangers a shot at keeping Sheets at a semi-reasonable price in ’11 (marginal cost effectively 2 million less than the list price because of the buyout price).
